Why does the XR GTR hate me...!?
Hi guys,

Have beend driving the XRR for a few km's now, but I can never get to grips with this piece of junk of a car! I've tried everything setup-wise - maximum toe-out on the rear, maximum rear downforce... but whenever I get anywhere to close to the car's limits, I spin round and round!! Even when I don't spin round and round, after 4 laps my tyres are good as shot.

Help me, so my experience with the XR GTR can be a great experience rather than one which was nothing but frustration!!! (And please, don't tell me to drive the FXO GTR. I hate that car a lot now.)

I love skinning this car, and I want to love driving it too! But it seems to have the air of a tsundere*... how can I get it to love me?

*tsundere = (ツンデレ, Tsundere?) is a Japanese term for a personality that is initially combative, but becomes loving and emotionally vulnerable. Tsundere is the antonym of yandere where a person is initially loving, then combative, often brutally so. The definition of the term has evolved to apply to not only characters who change from harsh to gentle but who are cold on the outside and kind internally. It is a character archetype in Japanese anime and manga. Tsundere is a combination of the two words tsuntsun (ツンツン, tsuntsun?), and deredere (デレデレ, deredere?). Tsuntsun is defined as "aloof, morose, pointed", and deredere is defined as "exhausted, lovestruck" Tsunderekko (ツンデレっ娘, Tsunderekko?) is a related noun, referring to a girl with a tsundere personality. While the term is most often applied to women, it is gender-neutral and can be applied to men as well. While tsunderekko are not exclusive to Japanese entertainment, the term tsundere came about as a result of the need to describe the many tsunderekko found in games and harem anime. Like nekomimi, tsundere is considered a moe-inspiring character trait.

FWIW, I hate all the XR cars. The XRG I just can't get over the horrible sound of. It hurts my ears and I literally have to remove the headphones after a single race. No tweaking of the sound will fix it for me, it is just literally painful unless I run extremely low volume.

The XRT is nothing more than a drift car for me. I can make it as understeery as you possibly can with the setup and it still hangs out in 90 degree drifts.

I don't have much experience with XRR, since I immediately took a liking to the FZR when S2 was released. But any time I've tried it, it was the same as you say, nothing but spinning out everywhere. Though I haven't messed with the set in this car much since FZR is my GTR car of choice hands down.

Nothing useful there, just that I understand where you're coming from.

Just drive it like a road car. If you can go fast in the XRT, you can do it in the XRR with pretty much the same driving style. It's my favourite out of the GTRs (although I'm not a GTR driver at all tbh).

You have done your apprenticeship in the XRT, right?

Oh, one thing I noticed about the XRR: With most fast setups it can be a bit scary under braking. Take care not to stay hard on the brakes for too long because once the benefit of downforce wears off you'll lock up the rears, then the engine revs will drop like a stone and when you finally come off the brakes you'll spin the car. Get used to which corners do that to you (probably all of the slow ones) and you'll learn when you need to start getting easier on the brake pedal.
The XRR can be difficult to control, however I took your car for a test drive and your set is understeery - too much, actually - but I don't think that info helps

I've attached a "propper" set for this track - you may not like it, and you'll probably find it much harder to drive - but you can use it as a guide to make/tweak your own setup.

I have a simple suggestion for you: Don't be scared or nervous about pushing it.

In fact, you want to do some drifting.. yes, drifting. Experiment.. push the car around.. play with it. see how it reacts - thats what you need to do and learn (the car) before you even think about doing fast/good laps.

Currently you can barely do the oval part without lifting off during the later turn - the speed is even lower than it sould be, and your set is safer than most really fast sets - so you have lots and lots of room to experiment in. Besides - you'll learn faster from mistakes.

I know this isn't the "magic" tip you might be looking for, but by the look of it, you simply need more driving experience. Keep at it, and in time the XRR will start to grow on you.


Few other tips: Are you using mouse? Looks like it - try lowering the sensitivity - steering too drastically/fast upsets the car = spin.

Also, keep the wheel/tires as straight as possible before accelerating.

You also might want to use a high LSD preload, in case you are experiencing spins during braking

Which will make the car extremely unstable and prone to oversteer. That may be your problem--you want toe-in, not toe-out.
I prefer to not use toe at all if I can avoid it.

Yeah, me too... Toe (on the rear) is something purely to quickly fix bad handling, and has the side-effect of the car snapping quickly if you stray over the limit...
I've grown good freinds with the XRR. you have to drive it fast to get the best out of it. the turbo lag is still there and it does hurt lap times so you sort of have to drift it out of corners and correct the oversteer. it takes a few laps for it to get to its full potential. nevertheless, its still slow on a single lap with FZRs and FXRs.
sorry to sound crap, but i think your racing line isn't that great, try to come in the corners more slowly, and WIDER!, and then you will come in faster, try to keep on the apexs, they help you with your lines (well they helped me :shrug

Which controls are you using? i may be able to help if its a mouse/keys set. I can manage a 1:36 on keys round KY2. The set is actually based on a set from the old S2 physics. Seems to work better now then before
I'm going to have to second the anti-toe-out sentiment. Try zero toe first. After adjusting everything else to your liking, if the car still exhibits snap oversteer, try 0.1 or 0.2 degrees of toe IN. Any more than that and your setup is probably the problem, not the car.

With all due respect to Harjun (i know he's only trying to help you) his lines are poor and his lap time is slow.

Have a look at this instead. The lines are better and its a lot faster (bear in mind these are the first three laps I've ever driven with this combo, so it's FAR from perfect. Lap three is the best.)

I've hardly driven any laps in that car, but it sure is fun

I dont know, never had any problems with XRR except for the turbolag it provides...
yes, I know Im not the fastest racer out there, but I manage top 10 finishes every now and then on conedodgers server...
when I feel like i'm about to lose grip - I either back off a bit (in the middle of a turn for example) or get ready to correct the oversteer to powerslide (small angle of course) out of the corner (only do that after the apex, if im honest...)
sure it's hard to do at speeds over 200 kph, but at speed like 140-160 - it's easy...
I cant watch the replay here, but I think the problem is - you don't feel the limits of the vehicle, and push too much...
A bit of progress.
Made the toe a bit more "centred" and also adjusted the wings to have the same angle, and raised the ride height. It shaved almost a second off my time.
Also trying to get down to 1:44 at the popular GTRs@AS3 combo, but no replay as I totally need more experience before I can take any real specific advice.

ah, come on...even I can do those times...
what really helps is downshifting to help you brake, and learn trailbraking (didnt see the replay - im at work)
