building my own pc
Hi there,

I am thinking of building my own pc with these components.
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-6400C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit
Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) OEM
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 Soundcard - OEM
BFG 800W UK/PFC Approved PSU
Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 320GB ATA-133 8MB Cache - OEM
Asus P5K WS Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

And i was just wondering is it all compatible?

Sam.

I defently can hear a jakg post coming

Great, only i'd ditch the PSU and get something better, get a Seagate 7200.10 drive, i wouldn't bother getting the WS, just the plain P5K.

I'd also get a 640 MB version of that card if i could, or just get the "plain" 320 MB version.

How much is that memory setting you back?

I'd also look into a new monitor.

£176 including VAT So if possible Jak could you give me a link of what mobo to go for the reason why i have a 320mb GFX is because i can only stretch to about £900 i may only get 2gig of ram yet so its cheaper.
Wouldn't i also need a 64bit version of a operating system for the specs of the pc if i build it.

I wouldn't get that bundle - it's not the G0 Quad like you used in your first build. A G0 + the memory i suggested and a P5K comes to £335 iirc.

And how much is your current PSU?
#7 - sam93
Don't know it just says on the pack of the pc:
AC Input - 100-240Vac 4-2A 50-60HZ.

So keep the current first build but change the hard drive the mobo the ram and the psu and it should be fine?

I'm think of getting this P5K because it has WiFi built in and in my house i have a wireless network.

And as i said above this hard drive.

With 2 of the Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400/800MHz CL4-4-4-12 Ballistix 2.2V SLI Ready sticks so i will have 2gig of ram.

So i just have to sort the PSU out now and it should be all good?

I meant how much is the PSU your looking at buying?
#9 - sam93
Oh i see i dont know i dont really understand PSU's i need to know the watts/amps i need for the pc

Once again, how much is it going to cost you? For that you could get away with a 580w Hiper, but i could find smething better.
#12 - Jakg
I'll think i go for the hiper that means the whole system will only cost me £736.94

Components will be:
Asus P5K Deluxe WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-E DDR2
Intel 2 Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
Hiper HPU-4M580 580w ATX 2.2 PSU
Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) OEM
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 Soundcard - OEM
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Barracuda 7200.10 250gb Sata-ii - 3.5in 9ms 7200rpm 16mb 3gb/s Ns
2x Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400/800MHz CL4-4-4-12 Ballistix 2.2V SLI Ready

So that should be it?

Sam.

Edit: different Hard Drive.
Seagate 160GB 7200.10 7200RPM SATAII/300 8MB Cache - OEM

I'd go for the P5K standard and the Tagan PSU
I know but its the budget i kind of have to stick to as it will be my dads money buying the components i know you say the the normal P5K but with it having WiFi it is easier because i dont have to install a seperate wifi card and the psu will kind of break the budget because i also have to buy XP Pro i am not touching vista yet with the driver issues it is having ill upgrade to it though within a year or 2.

WiFi card - £20

P5K - £72

P5K Deluxe - £132.
Didnt think of it that way and plus i dont really have to buy one with having one already what is in my current desktop and it works a treat but i may turn to ethernet again because of the better speeds using cable instead of wifi.

Are you talking about this P5K?

Is there much difference in them though except the price?
#20 - Jakg
The deluxe gets RAID, better overclocking and WiFi. 'Bout it TBH.
Whats the difference between the Premium and the Deluxe?

Sorry for the HiJack Sam.
Dont worry about it

I will see think between the deluxe and the normal one because i am not bothered about overclocking much.

Sam.

Edit: Is there any difference between the G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-6400C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit and the Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400/800MHz CL4-4-4-12 Ballistix 2.2V SLI Ready apart from the price and memory because if my dad will let me have that little bit more money i would prefer to get the G.skill 4gb instead of the crucial 1gb as i would need 4 of those when i can just use 2 sticks and get 4gb of ram?
#23 - Jakg
The only difference is that the G.Skill has higher timings (and is therefore a little slower) and that the Crucial's use D9 chips which overclock very nicely (good for resale value) and are actually rated for DDR1000 at the same timings as the G.Skill's.

If your not getting Vista, i would only get 2 GB of RAM for now, and if your only getting 2 GB i'd get 2 x 1 GB so you get dual channel - there seems to be no disadvantage to run 4 sticks of the same memory on an Intel system. You cold spend the cash you save on the 640 mb version of yout card or a bigger monitor - or just not spend it.

4x sticks of the Crucial Ballistix is £166 delivered, the cheapest 2 x 2 GB i could find is this, which has higher timings but isn't a bad price.

Personally, if i was getting 4 GB i'd get 2 GB now, and 2 GB when i needed it and i'd go for the Ballistix as there is no disadvantage to having 4 sticks and you end up with quicker, more overclockable RAM that will be easier to sell for the same price. Even for £200 i couldn't find memory which was CAS#4, so those Ballistix seem the best (Only a few weeks ago i bought mine for £31.87 each - bloody eBuyer!)

If you have 4 GB of RAM you'll want a 64-bit OS, as a 32-bit OS takes 4 GB of memory max minus your graphics card RAM, your sound card and space allotted for your PCI stuff - in practice your looking at between 2.75 and 3.25 GB being recognised maximum.
Quote from Jakg :The deluxe gets RAID, better overclocking and WiFi. 'Bout it TBH.

Quote from The General Lee :Whats the difference between the Premium and the Deluxe?

...

EDIT - Just spotted these on the net, they have the same timings as the Ballistix, but are cheaper - they won't overclock as well, but 4 GB would cost you about £100 + postage, which could make up for it!
Once i have built the pc would i have to apply any grease/oil type stuff to anything well no grease/oil but something along those lines just checking because i am shore i dont do i?
#25 - Jakg
Yes, however i believe the Intel stock heatsinks come with some Thermal Pads which mean you litterally just drop the heatsink on.
