There seems to be no guide for this kind of stuff. Only a light guide how to capture footage from LFS, so I thought "what the hell, go for it". I know you could make movies with just about any software combination, but I decided to make one short guide out of DivX-VirtualDub since I use it So, making movies with DivX+VirtualDub;
"The what what?"
DivX
VirtualDub
"Guides?"
User guide
Converting guides
DivX+Premiere/VirtualDub
"OMFG all these options and different settings for encoding one file!? WTF!")=%(`"
You reeeeeally should read the enconding guides. If you still don't get it, here is a quick guide.
First of all, YES IT MATTERS. It matters what profile you select on the dropdown menu. Since;
Enabling Encoding presets is a safe way to make quick encoding. One slider, it's not that hard.
The Rate selectionis a trickier one. To put it short;
'1-pass quality-based' = Pack the file, f**k the filesize. Quality is a must!
'multipass, 1st pass' = read below
'multipass, Nth pass' = You first run 'multipass, 1st pass', which creates a useless piece of crap black video that you can't use. After, you run the 'multipass, Nth pass' and VD overwrites the first pass to a readable avi-file.
Second tab is disabled if you select "use presets" on first tab.
Keep these settings on square pixels, use resize filter if you need to resize.
-x-x- PROBLEMS ENCODING A FILE -x-x-
"ANY problem referring to audio"
Easiest way (my opinion) is to decode audio to x.wav and compress the x.wav it with Virtualdub. Try reading the Encoding audio guide
"The Source image format is not acceptable"
DivX encoder doesn't like the source (the file you are trying to pack) Use filters to resize the file. The new size should be something you can divide by 4 in width and divide by 2 in height (preferrably both by 16)
Insert new width and height
hint: let virtualdub count the correct resolution for you (example using a 16:9 ratio)
Filter mode
(bilinear -> make-it-bigger, bicubic -> make-it-smaller)
Just use the default (precise bicubic), because I assume you want to downsize the file.
Check preview
":F That didn't help at all"
Go 'regedit' with commando-line. (Couldn't resist it )
(XXX WARNING XXX)
What you make on your computer is up to you, I only share what I know. Your computer SHOULD be perfectly safe. IF you decide to go rambo and remove other stuff on the side.. good luck with it.
Find this location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\VIDC.YV12
Change value to "DivX.dll"
"AC3 sounds louder?"
Solution
Download AC3 Filter
Download AC3 FilterFixTool
"Audio Codec missing?"
List of audio codec errors and codec downloads
"Damn it, I tried those already and it still doesn't work!!½!½½½!!"
1# "A really REALLY fast fix"
2# "Fastest 'safe' fix around"

1) Uninstall all codecs via control panel. (NO, deleting the directories is not the same thing)
2) Go 'regedit' with commando-line.
Find location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\
Delete all vidc.xxx
3) Restart computer
4) Install DivX
4.1) Install secondary codecs
This is optional of course, but I use FFDSHOW codecpack on the side. (Useful for winmediaplayer/premiere/virtualdub combination)
5) Forget about mod and dvd versions of VD. Download original VirtualDub.
"I read this stupid thread and I'm back to square one!"
One, RTFM.
Two, F.A.Q.
Three, Google
-x-x-x-x-x-x-
Additional information is more than welcome.
It's 4AM, I'm out of rhum and tired. I'll edit the post when I wake up
