ext3 file recovery
This is a bit of a long shot, but by through fault of my own (ie formatting over a partition) I've lost some work (and some music etc) that I had on a ext3 Linux partition.

Now I'm pretty skeptical here but has anyone had any luck recovering files from an ext3 partition after its been formatted over?

I've tried several programs but tbh had no luck, looks like I may be doing the work again pretty hastily.

Not been in the situation myself, so can't really say if this works, but might be worth a try.

Or it might not...

From the ext3 FAQ:

Q: How can I recover (undelete) deleted files from my ext3 partition?
Actually, you can't! This is what one of the developers, Andreas Dilger, said about it:

In order to ensure that ext3 can safely resume an unlink after a crash, it actually zeros out the block pointers in the inode, whereas
ext2 just marks these blocks as unused in the block bitmaps and marks the inode as "deleted" and leaves the block pointers alone.

Your only hope is to "grep" for parts of your files that have been deleted and hope for the best.

Cheers, but yer it would take me longer to recover it (like forever) than it did to rewrite the work this morning - and it's probably better now I've done it a 2nd time
