10mb Internet screwy?
Well according to virgin media im on a 10mb internet connection...but i download at around 280kb/s at a good time at highest...im interested is this right? Or could my modem be capping it or something? (Motorola surfboard SB4100) Old cream thing

Im also quite worried, my mums got one of these cable tv things which share with my internet connection is this going to screw it up since shes splitting it? It dosnt sound to me like its a good idea splitting a internet connection between a TV and 2 Pc's

10 mbit = 1280 KB/s MAXIMUM.

You then need to see if your actually connected at this speed (your probably "up to" 10 mbit), and then you need to find a server that will give you this speed. I've pulled 1,000 KB/s from my connection, however usually i get around 500 KB/s thanks to servers locations etc.

Ah ok that (kind of) makes sense in my small non advanced mind ill look into this
Cheers,

IIRC sure cable doesn't suffer from transmission loss over distance so it should always connect at 10Mbit.

Try downloading from several locations simultaneously to test the max speed. Most servers are pretty good these days, but I usually have to d/l from 2 or 3 to max out my 24mbit connection.

edit: I see Motorola is yet another company who own the world's slowest servers. Another utter joke of a support website. n1 Motorola.

The 10mbit service is what the old 4 became isn't it ?
I think you've reached your limit and been capped.

Package Allowance Maximum Speed Capped Speed
Broadband M 350 MB 2 Mbps (download) 1 Mbps (download)
200 Kbps (upload) 128 Kbps (upload)
Broadband L 750 MB 4 Mbps (download) 2 Mbps (download)
512 Kbps (upload) 192 Kbps (upload)
Broadband XL 3 GB 20 Mbps (download) 5 Mbps (download)
512 Kbps (upload) 256 Kbps (upload)

Think i was on 1 or 2mb before virgin toke over ntl and hmm, that would make sence i download a good few Gigs a month :| ill have a look on teh virgin media website
Ok we just looked on Virgin media website, Were on "Medium" up to 2mb (so thats right) but the bills we get say we are on 10mb

Had a look: Were "apparantly" on a 10mb offer for £8.00 for 6 months or something and once its over we get 2mb for £18 a month :| and we dont have any download limits,

In responce to Jakg any easy way i can do this other than ringing them?

If your being charged for a service and getting something else or something similar, theres nothing a bunch of forum users can do.

You'll need to call 'em up.
Called them up...apparantly its something to do with the way theyve named the half price offer...most retarded thing ive seen in a while im actully on 2mb :
2 Mbit = 256 kbytes/s, so it's working fine.

Gotta hate false advertising...

Also, splitting the connection doesn't do any harm, in total it can still download at 2 Mb. Only if each computer is downloading at the same time, then obviously the speed will be split between the two.

virgin media up to 20mb

Is that all. I thought 2MB= 2000kb!

So that's why I thought my internet was so slow, only getting about 150kbps!

i reccommend using this as a download meter. Download from a location near you and its almost certain to max out your connection. On an up to 24 meg service with bethere i get about 9 meg, which works out to be ruffly 900kb/s, which i think is ****ing awesome considering im a 15 minute walk away from the exchange.

undoubtedly asus has the slowest servers in the world, downloading at 1 kb/s isnt ideal when bios's and sound card drivers need to be downloaded, which is a fair few meg.
It's 2Mb, not 2MB. MB refers to MegaBytes. Mb refers to Megabits. Note the difference. To get kB/s, you multiply 2Mb by 1024 kb/Mb = 2048 kb/s, and you divide by 8 bits/byte, so 2048/8 = 256 kB/s. Note the differences between small b and capital B. Those are not mistakes, they actually mean something, and ISPs exploit them as much as possible beacuse people who have no technical knowledge will never know the difference.

You only get 9 meg from a mile away? Crazy, I must be closer to the exchange than I thought, I get about 16 meg.
try testing it at london sod the recomended server
