Either.

The 2048 one is hi-res so will look nicer. The 1024 one is primarily for uploading to LFSW so others see it if you use it. The filenames must be the same though, so remove the 1024 from the name before you upload.

Paying for the 1024 option as you put it means you download skins of others from LFSW at a higher quality than if you don't pay. Nothing to do with just using a skin really.
