cf Wikipedia edit wars, etc.
I've been on some forums which use the karma/reputation system, and none of them seemed to have gotten any benefit from it. Usually it devolves into yet another way to flame someone. Posters who don't like each other are constantly in neg-rep battles, and the posters with already huge egos have yet another statistic with which to inflate it further. Nothing that can be done with these systems can't currently already be done. If someone makes a thoughtful post, reply saying so. If someone does something stupid, report it or ignore it.

Besides, there's already too much clutter on this forum because it allows animated avatars. I want my forums simple. Plain backgrounds. Consistent font, size and color in posts. Small, motionless avatars or none at all. If I wanted bright colors flying around the screen enough to make me dizzy, I'd turn on the TV for a change.
yeah, karma is pretty much pointless.

It Would Help If People Read What Is Written As I Will Quote Myself From Earlier.........

Quote from MR_B :Ok then, how about the goodpost/bad post system, where it doesn't show it on your profile. But it counts towards star ratings in the threads as to whether it's a good thread or yet another "steer clear" thread?

When members currently vote on the threads they cannot change their ratings when new posts are made. So you could be giving 5 stars to a crappy thread.

So it's not a User Karma, but actually contributes to the star rating of the thread, promoting a higher quality forum. Otherwise this place will continue on the slippery slope of "I'll avoid that site". Which I know some people already do.
I really liked the perks and traits in Fallout... maybe an idea

It is hard to make any use from it, mostly people would just abuse it just because. After all, we have had discussion whether even the post count should be removed or hidden. I have no problems adding tags and small graphics to show if someone is/has done something special about something (good movies, lots of hotlaps, lots of miles driven etc...) but to create a karma system just to have a system of karma... naah.

What about yearly flaming banana award for the best forum act of the year?

You mean threads started by a user with a low karma rating would automaticaly have a star rating to match? You think even fools don't have moments of lucidity?

This whole thing is bogus. It doesn't matter who says what, only whether it stands up to reason or not.
