Saw that one coming. I agree though, rallycross is extremely good fun. Shame it's rarely on the tube anymore. You see the occational half hour summary, but that's about it.
Personally I also enjoy F1, WRC, and even a bit of V8 supercars. Recently I've become more and more aware of MotoGP as well. Never really been into bikes but blimey, you don't see that kind of action in most four wheel championships.
Endurance racing, NASCAR(yeah and what?), F1 sometimes, moto GP and WRC. I'll pretty much watch anything with engines and wheels that go racing. I suggest to all those who hate drag racing, go down to santa pod one day when the FIA dragsters are in town. You will never forget it, you'll also never need a pacemaker again if you have one . i have watched just about all forms of motorsport apart from rallies and motorbikes (not the modern ones anyway).
Simply because its more consistently exciting then Single Seaters, F1 goes through length boring periods such as since 2000, but Sports car racing has always been exciting.
Think of how many iconic cars have come from endurance racing, Jaguar D types, Ferrari 330 ps, Lola T70s, GT40s, 917S, Ferrari 512s and 312 ps, Porsche 935s, 956s and 962s and ofcourse Jaguar XJRs and the all conquering Audi.
It may not be the same as it used to be, but that was only because the FIA murdered Group C by changing it to a 3.5 litre formula to stop it from overshadowing F1, I reckon that Group C would have become absolutely massive if it would have been allowed to carry on.
And with lots of new teams this year, I think this may be the best season for quite a while.
Im hoping that someday racing will become a full spectator sport instead of a form of business and advertising, but perhaps I'm being Naiive.
almost anything though on tv i find the coverage often is more important than the racing as a high ratio of talking to action puts me right off e.g. 10 mins interview then 30 ses to cover the staging and a drag race then 10 mins talking before then next race. on the otherhand i really miss motors tv s coverage of the whole days racing inc seat cupra, fbm etc, with the non stop chatter of the comentators it was just like being at a meeting.
outside motorsport i really enjoyed the bmx racing at the olympics, it's almost as if they set out to make a bicycle version of rallycross with short fast races with plenty of incident.
also fond memories of rallycross in the 70s on tv and grandstand and world of sport in general, those were great days, if you could cope with the horse racing on both, the rugby league on bbc or the wrestling on itv, then you had pretty well non stop action of some sport or other for 4 hours on both channels every sat afternoon. anyone else remember the original rally sprints at esgair dyfed and donnington (i think) ? . world of sport introduced me to the indy 500 and bathurst, plus in those days despite being limited by camera numbers, a much longer and more spread out event and more basic technology, they always seemed to produce a far better rac rally highlights feature than todays hi tech, media friendly, camera in any oriffice coverage can manage, once agan probably because it was almost all action with little talking. do we really need interviews with drivers after almost every stage? lets keep the interviews till after they've finished or wrecked their car in a maneuver that wouldn't look out of place in the olymics gymnastics !
