Yes, I know, the thread title says it all. I have a Linksys router. But it's no longer my main one! So here's my setup:
In the sitting room, there's the normal router, with the family PC. In my room (at the complete opposite side of the house), there is now the old Linksys router, with all of my network capable devices. Some of these I'd like wired, some wireless. The only thing that gets a decent signal though, is my laptop, so I've been using that as a bridge to extend the network into my room. But then I can't really use the laptop
So we got our new broadband package today, which comes with a router, so I claimed the old one. It's a Linksys WRTP54G. Yes, P. For phone . I'm trying to use that to receive the wireless signal from the main router, and then to use that as it's internet feed. I'd like it to be able to then transmit wirelessly to other devices, but that's not essential. I'm not allowed to run ethernet down the house (even though I did run co-ax and SCART down...parent's eh? )
I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to try and put custom firmware onto it, namely DD-WRT, and OpenWRT. Largely due to my routering incompetence, all I've managed to do was reset the router, and rescue it from Vonage's clutch.
But just recently I read that the WRT54G, which is supposedly the WRTP54G with a different body kit, and without VOIP, can be hacked easily. I don't need the phone support (we've gone back to normal landline with the new broadband)
Could anybody help me out here? I know this isn't a networking forum, but I'd be slightly embarrassed going onto one and knowing nothing about how routers work Has anyone had experiences using custom firmware on the WRTP54G, or even just to run WRT54G firmware on it (Yes, I have tried, but it's some checksum thingy is off)? Even just a guide that I haven't found would be brilliant.
