FTP Connection issue?
I'm trying to connect to a friend's webspace and having several issues doing so. I've checked and double-checked and as far as I can see all the info is correct (port #, ftp address, username, password) but I still cannot get it to connect.

My firewall is turned off, and my antivirus isn't blocking the program. I've tried a few different ftp apps, and nothing seems to connect. My friend has used the same login info as myself and can connect just fine.

Any ideas?
Does it time out, or does it fail on AUTH? If neither of those, does your FTP log state where it got up to in the connection process (dump it in here, sans any passwords, etc.) and it'll be easier to diagnose.
Usually, the first connection attempt times out. Every attempt after that just has a "failed to connect" error.

I'm guessing it's a problem with my network in one form or another, but I don't know anything about networks, really, so no idea where to begin looking.

Yeah, sounds like a local network problem. You may want to check any hardware firewalls you have, or any port forwarding that might be set up. That's about all I can say without seeing an FTP log (or having some more details).
By FTP log, do you just mean the little message area where the program says what it's doing? What other details do you want/need?

As for port forwarding, what should I be looking for? Obviously I'll have to go into the router settings on the hardwired computer (mine is on a wireless connection) to view it, but I don't know what I should be looking for.

Activate passive mode in the ftp program, if it's not already. Could be it.

I know one host that uses/has used a system where, when you log into the cpanel, your IP is logged, and only this IP can connect via FTP. If your IP changes or whatever, logging into the cpanel is all that is needed to update the IP info.

This I believe is to stop abuse.

Hope that's not the case, then, unless multiple IPs can be setup.

When I get home from work I'll try Passive mode.
