As you can probably see by my post count, I am VERY new to this here game. However, I'm a complete motorsport fanatic, so I know how and how not to race, the genetics of driving a car fast on a track, etc.

I "happened" on one of the CTRA servers last night at about 2200 GMT, and found a load of people flying around in the wonderful UF GTR (w/ 45% intake restriction). Looked like a whole lot of fun, so I jumped in for a few races. Had a flippin' great blast. Pack racing in little mini-esque motors is heaps of fun, and the guys on the server were all exemplary racers, give or take the odd wayward nudge in the 1st corner (even the best do it, eh?). Lovely to experience this, after having some horrible experiences on other servers, with the usual kids driving into anything and everything.

Obviously, it took me a bit of time to get going, but towards the end I was eeking the odd half second here and there - fantastic stuff. However, consistently my times were a good 3 seconds off the lead, which meant at the end of a 17 lap race, I had been lapped by the first three drivers - bummer.

In racing, I _swear_ I wasn't doing anything that far different. So after watching in spectator mode, I found that the other drivers were able to get a good 5+ mph extra in a straight line. It wasn't down to fuel, because I had fuelled the car to run literally to the finished line and then die. Is this 5mph purely down to the setup being used? If so, where in the world can I get these setups?

I'm probably asking in completely the wrong place here, so please bear with me

With the restricted classes that CTRA run (UF Baby R/GT2) the setup can have quite an effect.
Top speed could also be down to carrying more out of the previous corner.

You can ask in game for someone to send you their setup, most (even superfast) people you meet online don't mind sharing, but some do and will not share with you. If someone has sent you their setup, you will see a green 'S' next to their name in the connections list. Click this, then give it a name and save it.

You should not ask whilst people are actually racing, requests like this tend to get ignored.
If someone says they wont share, don't get all arsey about it...just a simple 'Oh well, thanks anyway.' type reply will do. You don't want to make them remember you as that whining guy in case you ask them for a different set in the future.

Setups are also available from Team Inferno Setup Field and My3id Setup Grid.
Setup
Hi!

There will be two ways to get setups:

1. The simple way is to ask one of the faster drivers, if he can send you his set (Don´t forget to say "please" )

2. The other way, is downloading the base set from the ctra site:
http://www.raceauthority.com/servers.asp
and work out your own set.

I prefer the 1st way, the most drivers on ctra servers are friendly and will send you their set . Don´t be shy.

I have the same problem! I was in somebodies draft after getting a better exit out of the previous corner in an FBM at Blackwood and the other driver pulled away - I checked our setups and found that we where close to identical.

I think a lot of it is gear changes, but also subtle things like variations in toe angle, tyre pressure, and gear ratios can and do make a difference.

How much is the FBM improved by using 'the exploit' ?

Hmmm, yes I see what you meen, that car would be quite seriously effected by it.

Once i was wondering how FXO was passing me at 220-225 kph,while we were even on 200,and nobody was around[no slipstream].My revs were around 7000 RPM,so when i tryed to make Longer gear [max power of XRT is at ~6100RPM], so in same situation i had around 6400-6500 rpm,i could pull away a bit.
Also,as Becky said: it depends on Toe In,Cambers and Pressure of the tires.[Sure gear ratios]
Corner exit speed makes a huge difference in the mini's. Try and check that against people faster on the straights.
