Is it just my laptop or is Vista really that stupid
So I select shutdown on my laptop and once I see it start the shutdown I would expect it was safe to close the lid.

no... I have hibinate on so what does vista do????

Yep, it hibinates the shutdown part way through so the next time I power up I can watch the rest of the f*ing shutdown I missed when I closed the lid.

I know the shutdown process has that nice looking shutdown screen at the end that MS does not want me to miss but FFS.

Rant over

Yes, Vista is that stupid. Or you are that stupid for shutting the lid (and activating hibernate) whilst it was shutting down.

And I really need to uninstall that spanish FF dictionary. All the words in this are spelt wrong
Yep, getting your point, but it could be any windows on any laptop...

I once shut down my notebook, just like you did, I put it in my rucksack and after two and a half hours or so I grabbed it, put it on and it felt nice and warm on the back... guess what...

Since then I always watch the LEDs
I always make my laptops ignore whether the lid is shut or not, I am smart enough not to shut the lid with it on, and there are times when I want the lid shut for a few minutes while its still on, and I can handle turning the thing off... I have had that issue only one, and it was with XP and boy didn't that make me upset to sit there and watch it shutdown when you wanna use it.
I've my laptop set to just turn off the screen when it's closed over. Hibernate and Sleep are both just a key combination away at all times anyway
If possible set it to sleep when the lid is shut. That is assuming you want that behavior. Personally I much prefer it to instantly restore where I was previously when I reopen it, if you need to shut it down you can manually.

Hibernate is one of the worst features to grace this earth. God knows why it's still an option in Windows... Oh yer that's right, because instead of actually writing a new OS with user experience in mind, they just build upon the last version. And they build using bricks of wank.
Always check Vista Power options...

I like hibernate - for me it's quicker than turning off and booting up the next day, plus it saves all the stuff you were working on so you can start working straight away. But hibernating while shutting down is just nuts.

Why is hibernate so bad? It stores all your information then doesn't use any power whatsoever so you can come back later and continue right where you left off. I would be very upset if I lost my ability to hibernate... Sleep isn't close to the same effect, it still uses power, sure it starts up quicker but the requirement of power is what I don't care for.

I always press the button (to put it to sleep) as if I close it, it doesn't always seem to turn the bloody thing off when I close it.

Although I must confess my laptops OS is screwed - BSOD'ed twice today alone

EDIT - Sleep vs full power turning on for a minute or two - what uses more power?

Depends how long it was asleep, which brings the conclusion: if you're going away for more than, say, 4 hours, use hibernate. If not use sleep. QED (incorrect useage of QED).
Umm yer well im pretty sure the only option I have with my Macbook Pro is to sleep when I shut the lid - I reckon you could get a good few days out of it on sleep. It's not like its doing anything, just powering the RAM enough to store it's contents. It's definitely not as if it runs down in a few hours.

Hibernate is just as slow as booting from cold really, apart from it saves your session. Sleep saves my session, is instant, and has very little impact on battery life on the whole. My battery is fairly shot now anyway so will only last for maybe 2.5 hours under normal use.
My laptop had 0 battery since it's over a few years old now. I rarely use it, but the battery went dead only days after warranty expired... Go figure. Anyways, My laptop wouldn't even sleep while unplugged, hibernate is as slow as a full reboot, I'll give you that. But it stores what you were last doing and for me that is useful enough since I hate opening all my things back up... I'm a multi-tasker from hell when using my computers :P Back to the point, I was simply stating the hibernate is very useful... at least to me.
The only thing to switch off when I shut my laptop lid is my screen. Life is better this way.
@BlackBird: Yer that's fair play. I'm definitely with you on the saved sessions thing, sometimes my machines won't be properly shut down for weeks due to things I'm working on and don't want the hassle of setting up every time I turn it on.
Yea, now the only thing that irritates me is those darn Windows updates that require a restart. They either restart without permission or bug you into submission, either way your computer will be restarted without fail. I could live without those! The longest between proper restarts was my laptop with over 2.5 months in between windows updates... then one caught me while I left it on during sleep...
