I thought Gerrard played well. Him and the back four did alright, the problem was none of the forwards could keep the ball or score goals.
Carroll looked pretty confident but had no supply and for some reason Rooney was favoured over him. When you think of the younger players who didn't go or didn't play (Walker, Richards, Gibbs, Jones, Smalling, Rodwell, Wilshere, Cleverley, Sturridge, etc.), I think you could put Carroll at the head of a 4-2-3-1 with the next generation of players that will come through perhaps in qualification for the next world cup. We've got a midfield there that can pass the ball well and keep possession, and can be coached long term.
