The online racing simulator
how much bandwidth is used while racing online??
Well, after moving house i have finally got some kind of internet connection as of today. I have got a 3 mobile usb wireless modem which seems ok speed wise, however what i would like to know is if it is possible to find out how much mb is used by lfs when racing online (i think its called bandwidth but im not too hot on technical things!) This wireless thing i have got runs on a mobile (cell) phone SIM card which is topped up in the normal way. I then have to convert this topup into a broadband addon. A topup of £10 buys me 1gb of internet. All i need to know is, how long roughly would 1gb allow me to be online for??

This brings me to my second question...

I just did a speed test and this is what the results were.

download speed 432kbps
upload speed 55kbps

I have no idea what those numbers really mean so does anyone know if that is fast enough not to lag the server.

I thank you all in advance.

are you using this temporarily or permanently?

download speed 432kbps
upload speed 55kbps

thats very slow, this is what i have

Quote from Jakg :are you using this temporarily or permanently?

It is a kind of temporary measure, as my flat is in the middle of an ongoing housing project with other flats and houses still being built, and bt want about £150 to connect me up with a phone line! for the moment this is cheaper. When i was living at my parents we had a 512kb connection (they live miles from the exchange) From what i remember the download speed was about 488kbps, so not that much slower than what i had before, however i think the upload speed at my parents was 200ish kbps, so that it lots slower. I am guessing that the downoad speed is the important one for online racing.
So, does anybody know what the actual usage of lfs is when racing online. Bearing in mind i have had this connection working for about 4 hours and i have clocked up 127 mb of use so far.

A race meeting on the server lasts approximately 1 hour. I want to book in to race but i dont want to find that lfs uses an epic amount and uses up the 873 mb i have left in the middle of the racing and cuts off my connection, which is what i guess it will do if i reach this 1gb limit.
Wirless + LFS = Fail

My result

(theoric bandwitdth is 30 mbits)

There are a lot of variables in this equation. How many people, on average, do you race against? Do you download skins or not? If you do download skins do you download high res or normal? The only way to get a true idea of what bandwidth LFS really uses is to get an application like DU Meter or NetLimiter, something that will be able to tell you exactly how much bandwidth you use. Do a typical 1 hour session and extrapolate out however much bandwidth that takes into a typical week's worth of LFS.
First of all, if you want to Convert KBPS to ko/s just divise per 8, you'll have a understandable result.. KBPS are often Theorical, but never reach...

if you want to meter your transfert Live, try DUmeter software with the clockwatch option, you can start timer when you want and close it when you want, so you start clockWatch, start LFS, play as long as you want and when you're bored, close LFS and check how much bandwitdh you've used...

But if you used a Usb Mobile card. to a wireless Network such as Cellular phones, your bandwith speed go up and down, dependly of where you are (kind of wall, distance of the tower, i've done a lot of test at my work, and yes its suprising how Webpage can open fast, but i've test iin another desk, and my transfert was slower.....

Nothing can beat Modem cable, with a wired Router..... its fast, and the bandwith does'nt cost an arm !!!!
Ok firstly - The telecoms service in Britain is terrible - Download speeds are way behind American and European standards - Even the Mexicans have better broadband than us.

Secondly, wireless+LFS does not equal fail. I use wireless which is giving me a 'very low signal' reading, and I very rarely time out. The only time I ever do is either when the microwave is on (to be expected, I guess), or when I've hit a download restriction where my bandwidth is cut down (again, to be expected)

Here's my result - I'm with AOL Silver if you're interested.

I've competed in many leagues with not one time out in any race, nor do I have a habit of timing out during normal races. Occasional lag where my wireless shifts network, but never enough to cause a time out, and it happens on a once or twice weekly basis.

I can't imagine LFS uses that much data usage. Normal download speed for me is approximatly 110kbps (1mb connection), and I can download and play LFS with no noticeable lag, whilst maintaining a 100+kpbs transfer rate.
Anyone who says wireless is rubbish for gaming either has a very poor quality router and/or reciever, or just says it for the sake of it.

Proof?
Forgot to mention Japan.

But my point stands clear. Most people in the UK are on 8mb or under connections, and many phone lines can only accept up to around 5 - Unless you're on fibre optic (which not many people are as you often need a Virgin satellite TV package to buy it)

Mexican bit was a joke btw ;D

Woohoo 3rd last (Although it must be a bit old...We can get up to 30mbps in cities now ya know)

LFS should run fine for you, think of all the people on dial-up who have much worse speeds, and they manage fine. As for the bandwidth, I don't have an exact figure, but there's no fear of your 800-odd MB being used up in an evening. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get a week's worth of LFS out of it to be honest

correct.

wrong. you can have fibre optic without the tv package and phone. (i'm 10mbps only but can upgrade to 20mbps anytime on their site)
at the moment, the post office are the hardest to beat for ADSL broadband. they charge £110 for an installation and their telephone package is also really cheap.
phone (line rental)and broadband for £25 per month. for this you get free evening and weekend calls. free weekend calls to uk mobiles and free weekend calls to 20 international numbers too. and then their on peak charges are also lower than most other service providers. their telephone has no contract but their broadband does.
i know this because i work for them. if i were to go with the PO i would take their bb-extra package just for the "unlimited" downloads and free wireless router.

i could of sworn i finished work an hour ago :s
Quote from dadge :wrong. you can have fibre optic without the tv package and phone.

Ahh cheers. Coulda sworn it was when you bought it as part of the TV package.
i went to double check and ended up upgrading to 20mbps :s but aye, they've always done it. i've been with them since the 1.5mbps line was their top speed. been getting free upgrades ever since. going from 7 to 10 was a great day

I just did another test (same site) and i got a download speed of 865kbps.... Then good old avg decided to run its 'scheduled' scan and made it crash!
I\stopped the scan and now its down to 152kbps again I wouldnt mind if it was at about 400ish constantly, but it fluctuates SO much i can see myself timing out a lot.
It's 3GP internet. No offense, what do you expect?
Quote from S14 DRIFT :It's 3GP internet. No offense, what do you expect?

Thats the thing, this is the first time i have ever used this kind of connection so i really dont, or should i say didnt, know what to expect at all. I have also discovered that 1gb of internet doesnt last long, i had to buy another gig today and i only got the 3g simcard-in-a-box-thing last night!
You used a gig of internet in a day? I don't use that much on our fixed line

I lasted an entire month over the summer when I was away from home with a 1GB mobile broadband thingy from 3. Worked out cheaper than our fixed line too, payed €5 for 30 days

Signal is entirely hit and miss affair with 3G IMO. At one side of my room, my phone has full 3G coverage, yet in the bedroom next door, it's halfway down 2.5G I was lucky enough to have near full coverage where I was for the 2 months, imagine spending 2 months with no internets
This was what the activity was doing while the test was in progress, (circled) i'm trying to find a way of stabilising it, even if its slower, as i dont wanna cause big lag spikes and upset people because i think that is unfair to other drivers.

According to google, my ip is also well known, as it is a dynamic one and if i set it to static it comes up as 0, 0, 0, 0, and i dont know what to put in there

Oh yeah, contrary to what it looks like, its actually xp sp3, not vista. I spent a few weeks slowly messing about with themes, shell files and registry bits until i got it as vista looking as i could.

Not had the internet for ages, except when i hijack mum and dads pc for 1 hour a week when i go for dinner (no-one looks after you, or can cook like your mum can!) so i have literally been on lots of sites and forums catching up on what i have missed.

Plus the fiancee had to catch up on facebook so bye bye bandwidth!

To be honest, I'd say stop being a cheap-skate and get a normal phoneline and cheapo £15 a month broadband service - £10 for 1GB usage is actually quite alot, considering most UK providers offer unlimited downloads based on a fair usage policy (Basically no torrenting during peak hours, or heavy and constantly downloads (i.e 5 movies a night) for under £30 a month. (We have unlimited on £17.99 a month for 1GB speed)

The 3G internet thing is fine for mobile usage but useless for home usages - The quality of connection varys too much and you pay far too much for it.
