Gran Turismo 5: Prologue - Better Than I Tought
Hi,

As some of you probably know, I bought myself a Playstation 3 for Christmas as I was bored of never being able to play any recent game on my PC. I got it and not so long ago, I was given Gran Turismo 5: Prologue by a friend.

At first I wasn't too sure I would like it since it's really not a rFactor or a Live For Speed. After a few races tho, and using my Logitech Momo, this game is really great. I say game because honestly, it's not a simulator. The cars are still well modeled and the tracks too which makes you forget the so-so physics quite fast.

I never played any Gran Turismo before this one because the only other console I owned was a Xbox but I can say it's really nice for the not-too-serious week-end racer willing to hand out with friends without having to worry about his driving skills. If you aint too good, just put the physics to a easier level and you're good to go. The game is still rather easy to play with Professional physics and all aids OFF. Live For Speed probably helped me.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Gran Turismo isn't as bad as some peoples on this forum are saying. Just like Forza 2, really. If you see it from the point of a hardcore simulation racer, you wont like it. But if you see it from the point of someone who want to drive his dream car on the most popular track around the world, then the game will charm you.
Good overall review there R.M. You seem to have gotten the point of it.

Gran Turismo is miles better than rFactor...

Anywho, I've owned all of the North American GT series, including Prologue (just recently purchased). While I still find the physics quite fun for pick-up and play racing, I am disappointed with one aspect of Prologue: tracks. I understand it's a demo (a $40 demo... and people complain about the LFS demo...) but the track selection in Prologue is shite. The only half-decent track in Prologue is that Norway one. I hate the rest of them.

My biggest gripe also.

I've seen better track selection on kids toy car mats.

People will pay $40 for a ****ing demo?

There must be a real dearth of titles for the PS3.

oh man! I wish I had a PS3. Great reveiw, you might make some people buy it. Also, on the previous versions, you are only missing out on the third Gran Turismo. The 4th one, just sucked in all physics. Third one, I could actually drift in there, and the graphics in GT3 are pretty good graphics. Anyway, great GT5 reveiw. Bet you can't wait for the full version to come out!

but why? Oh sh**, double posting again.
Not what I wanted to hear since the PS3 is still stupidly expensive.

Oh well, I'll always have Enthusia.

The thought of a console game surpassing a computer sim makes my skin crawl. That's my elitism talking. The plebes should get the inferior stuff.
They reckon the full game is still a year from release, so there's tons of time for them to work out the remaining problems.

The lack of tracks in Prologue is sort of to be expected. It is little more than a demo. I still reckon it was done just to have some sort of "don't forget about us" project on the market.
And I understand there's a damage patch in the works too, which is even better.

But the Norway track is a pain for one reason - the sides. The plastic ribbon which appears to be totally solid and you can use as a turn assist. I'm not saying have a spectacular crash and burn when someone goes off, but at least have them go through the ribbon and maybe hit a wall. Maybe even have the car fall over the edge and placed back on the track.
I'll accept the lack of damage and the slightly simplified physics. I'll accept not having that many tracks to actually choose from. But the ribbons thing really bugs me. Hopefully it'll be different when the full game sees the light of 2010. Until then I have Forza 3 to look forward to (but let's have a new thread for that one)
So it works well with the Momo? Force Feedback and all? I'll take it from a friend in couple of days to check it out.. but by the comments here, it seems that physics are not that much more advanced then GT4. That kinda strikes me, but if you think about it, GT4 had awesome physics for the hardware it was on (hey, a 299mhz CPU and 4mb Ram graphic card ). I had PS2 and GT4, was fun, but when i tried the first LFS S2 demo, i stoped playing it, but now that i think about it, it was awesome considering the PS2 specs..

Now, the PS3 is like 10 times more powerfull then the PS2 (maybe more) and i just can't accept that they haven't uped the physics engine that much? I got a strange feeling that the full version might be the real deal, cause, they are (polyphony) very much a driving enthusiasts and i kinda hope they are putting the physics engine at the highest priority. I mean, those kind of graphics, the ultimate Nordschleife version (the one in the GT4 was awesome, can't imagine how this one will look), the Top Gear test track, 300, 400 cars with detailed interiors.. it just sounds too good to let it go... but if the physics remain at this level like in GT5p then all of that doesn't matter..

I watched some vids, still doesn't look realistic but it's kinda possible..

it's car porn, nuff said.

amatur homemade car porn to be exact, the action bit is sweet, but the playback from many angles afterwards....weeee

Haha, if that's the reason why not buying GT games..well then I feel sorry for you mate

lol!

But you are right, the graphics are really stunning, it looks THAT good as people say. Played it with a friend of mine that got Ps3, damn I want to have sex with the monitor when those graphically pornographic pictures rolls over the screen.
I lost my love for the GT series with GT4 (well GT4 prologue but I still had hopes for the full thing). To me (despite all the limitations of a GT-Lite title) GT Concept Tokyo-Geneva is the most fun and nicest feeling game of the whole series. GT4 is just dull and boring and dead by comparison, and I got much the same feeling from GT5p when I played that. I thought I might want a PS3 for GT5, but I really don't care about it any more.
These kind of games are aall great oif you getb the point of them wich you seem to do very wel

Ihave tried GT5 with wheel and own forza2 and love both of them
For something not beighn sim they feel great
That's just it - they can't be 100% sim because the vast majority of players will use a joypad to control them.

Forza 2 and GT5P both run a really good mix of arcade accessibility and sim handling. Easy to get into, a lot of really good racing, realistic for the most part. That's all they need.
The only time it starts getting ugly is when a hardcore PC simmer comes along and tries to compare it with their expensive kit. Apples and oranges.
People complained about GT4 not being realistic enough. But they're overlooking the other stuff.

At the time GT4 was probably the best looking game at the time, even now it's not too bad on a SD CRT TV, but it had 700 cars for christ sake. You would always find a car you love in real life. It also had 50 tracks, there's never been a game of such quantity to rival it.
The physics weren't that bad either, they were some of the best console racer physics, beaten by Enthusia and a few others.
Quote from DTrott : but it had 700 cars for christ sake..

400 if you count out all the variations of Skylines, Supras, NSXs, random kei cars and so on.
Quote from Thunderhead :400 if you count out all the variations of Skylines, Supras, NSXs, random kei cars and so on.

More like 200 if you don't include all the random variants of the same car, maybe 75 if you only include real cars and not those stupid Suzuki Cappuccinos and other boring little crappy Japaneses cars.
I think the cars feel to sluggish in GT5p, except the F1 of course, that feels great.
I think GT3 was best, good selection of cars, and I enjoyed drifting on it.

Well, we'll see what GT5 full version is like at the end of this year
unless its delayed (like every other release)

I had both GT4 and Enthusia. Reason being that both had their upsides, both were individual games. Enthusia was much more realistic (I think it's the most realistic racing simulator on the console, Forza 2 is the only one that comes close), while GT4 was just a game to have fun on. GT5's physics are far better than GT4's, but I'll wait and see what the final GT5 is like before making a definitive judgement. However, I still stand by my view that GT5p is better than a game such as rFactor.

Yes there has.

its called kiado racer 2.

cost 20 euro new,

Whooped is ass Big time due to Realistic tracks ( they used laser to get eveyr dip and bend correct )

Good selection of cars....

its actually difficult too !
gt5 is fun, not the indepth hardcore sim but its simply awsome, and its a prolouge not a demo, ther is a prolouge demo though . its $40 USD, a ps3 game is usually 20 USD more.

but it had the jenson interceptor, which more than make up for it.

the handling is totally bonkers though, I remember GT3 being more fun...

It had alot of cars you wouldn't expect to see in a game.

Some of the funnest cars to drive were the shit ones. On the snowy track.
