Thompson was fantastic, Vaulkhard messed up due to inexperience and not keeping his cool IMO

Agreed, like the commentators said as soon as he saw the cars closing in behind he felt like he had to gets past Gio.. and caused a crash in the process. Still, he's spent most of his time at the back so can't really expect him to be perfect the first time he's up near the front.
