The online racing simulator
Quote from Crashgate3 :Adding some atmosphere I think would really help LFS. One of the reasons I've been slowly wandering over to other sims is that LFS, while it's a great simulation, is an incredibly soulless and clinical experience. It feels like you and a bunch of friends are the only people left on the planet after some horrific virus has killed everyone else, and you've broken into some race-tracks to mess about with the cars.

maybe that'll be one of the upsides to swine flu! :P hehe
Please no or at least if, then have a one slider in the options to make them silent.

Some games feature these sound effects and it always makes me annoyed to hear the same sound clip over and over again when I go past the main straight.

Plus the fact that I'm Finnish. In Finland if you go to a motorsports even't the crowd is quite silent. We don't shout "oooh lalala bononoo" when car goes past by, we like to actually hear the car itself. I always hate it when in a ie. rallying video some twats starts shouting and my ears blow up and I can't hear the car. Of course no hard feelings to you people in other countries, we just have different cultures.

Quote from tristancliffe :Except you can't hear the horns or the crowd from inside a racing car (except on parade laps and suchlike)

And yes + this fact. You can't hear these noises inside the car. Maybe on replay you could hear some of this stuff, but I would still have them on silent cause I wan't to hear the car.

LOL

+1 to the suggestion
Quote from Dajmin :Then what we need is dynamic crowds. The more people spectating on a server, the more people appear in the crowd and the more noise the grandstands make.
Spaced around the track, about 50-100 crowd members per spectator could be good, so with 20 spectators you get 2000 people round the track.

Then they need dynamic noises, so that if someone goes off the track or there's a collision, the crowd sound nearby changes to concerned tense noises.

The amount of detail you could go into is mad, but it would be very good in terms of creating atmosphere and keeping everyone involved.

Problem, not everyone really likes to spectate
Maybe there's a slight misunderstanding here.

IMHO, the crowd shouldn't be shouting over the cars or anything, but I'm pretty sure people have conversations or what to speak to their buddy when there is a bit of time where no cars are coming by.

I a low murmur for a crowd in game. Speaking just loud enough to be heard by the person next to them over the others talking. Of course, the more people you have in that crowd, the louder the person must talk.

Also now that I think about it, with the types of mods I've seen around, another user pointed out that there is quite an extensive detail a person could go into with something like this. The events that can trigger responses insim are absolutely astounding.

I finally remembered it was my first sim, Nascar Racing 2003 Season that had the crowd noise I was thinking of. I merely played a crowd just before you got in the car for the race IIRC.
i went to a rally cross competition yesterday, when A car came by with a drift, we shouted and clapped.
Quote from Zipppy :Just a suggestion to this idea, why not get the crowd stir a little bit if a car spins out or some other event (applauding from recovering from a near crash), or even "cheering on" the car in last position, instead of just approaching the spectators.

I also have a couple of examples I recorded in Montreal last June of this kind of thing. The spin out example was of a Porsche 911 race car. Most of the time the crowd is silent, if not quiet. The only voices heard most of the time are from the commentators talking on loudspeakers.

EDIT: found a link for an external mod that does the same

I loved the commentator example. It makes me feel such like "silence before the storm" while waiting for race.

Of course everyone's tastes differ. I quite agree with you that, the engine noise/sound is our privilige. Thus I chose music off while racing (reminds NFS in audio menu). On the other hand an option on/off switch or a sliding volume bar should be solution. Consequently, I assess a race entirely and these sound effects are some parts of the totality.
at oregon rally-X we only shout when they do a sweet drift or almost loose it
+1. I think that's a great idea; especially before the race starts and you're sitting on the grid, it's always a bit too quiet and kinda "eerie". Some cheering/murmuring in the stands and the odd air-horn would really fill-out the experience IMO, and add to the excitement and anticipation. If you've got a roaring crowd before the lights go green, it's just gonna make you want to win that *little* bit more.
