Ad Hoc Networks/Network Software or Hardware
So, now I'm at university I only have one link to the internet, via an internet cable. I have a laptop and PC here with me. I want to be sociable and therefore want to have my laptop working wirelessly so I don't have to stay in my room for whenever I'm generally browsing.

My PC has a PCI wireless antenna thing, which is fully functional. Yesterday, I was able to set up and ad-hoc network between my PC (Vista Home Prem) and my laptop (W7). I was able to share their internet connections as well. It worked for a while, but I had to restart my PC a while later and since then, my adhoc network is shown as "local only" and I can't figure out how to get the PC to share its internet connection. I haven't changed anything since yesterday, which makes me very confused. How can it work one moment and, without changing anything, be non-functional?

I've googled the problem and it seems a few people have experienced it but I've found no solutions for myself. I've spent at least 2 hours trying to figure it out but with no success.

So, now I am hoping to strike lucky on this forum, hoping that someone, at one time or another, has successfully set-up an ad-hoc network which has then broken.

Any clues?
Double post: If you have any solutions that don't require an ad-hoc network and involve buying some kind of hardware, please post and link me to the product! [This includes software or hardware that can turn my PC into a makeshift router]

I can't use a router, because it gets very complicated and I'm not even sure if they're allowed.
why not buy a cheap wireless router?
