AWS 2022 - Round 1
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2022
Round 1

Monday,20th December
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

The 11th season starts with something never been in AWS - a car that is neither FXR or RB4 and a car that has no internal combustion engine! This will be 1st of two appearances of the electrified XF eGTR-RX in this year's series, which brings few new challenges in racing. Biggest of them is power management - the energy source is exhausted in less than 1/3 of the race distance, meaning drivers either have to make 3 pitstops or extend range to need only 2 pitstops, luckily LFS features VERY powerful recharge stations,so pitstops won't be as long as they would be in real world. Besides that - this is the most powerful car ever used in this league and the electric drivetrain is also something to get used to.

All cars are equipped with right tyres from this season on,so the full dirt track of round one can be tackled with knobblies. The layout is made by AB's Mazdaratie, where RGE stepped in to neitralize one sharp turn before reaching 1st split, making the track somewhat faster, but not exactly easier. Powersliding is not an option, but a must to be fast on slippery grass surface, drivers just need to find best speed and angle, while final turn is already known to be the one, where you can be easily lost - the entry is very wide and cars reach their top speed before braking zone of final turn. Provided default dirt setup might be relatively useful, but drivers should still adjust it for personal liking.

Before the season opener, the signups list features already defending champion, past champion and winningest driver of series - besides this trio, another few strong names can be found who might aim for better results than before,so some other drivers might mix themselves between title candidates.

During it's 10 seasons AWS is known as a league offering different racing besides standard racing and it was also the case in opening round of the 11th season - this was the first ever sanctioned league race in LFS using electric powered cars. Unfortunatelly the organisation was not aware how much the pitstop bug could be misusable,so it surely had it's effect on results, but everyone was sort of in same boat. Still if the bug won't be fixed until next round using this car (round 5 in 14th february),organization will add some ruling to this case. A total of 22 drivers attended this new challenge,20 of them stood on grid waiting for green lights, another 2 retired as they put their cars on it's side.

The defending champion R.Kardol came on top once again and including intermission between seasons it's his 4th AWS racewin in row. But he had some work to do during the race as he qualified just 5th and jumped to race lead only after 1st pitstops sequence, but led practically rest of the race. The league newcomer Silva set the best lap in qualifying and took as first the lead in season standings, but he was able to lead just first 9 laps before getting passed - 2nd place finish at the end for the norwegian, who set the fastest lap also in race. The driver with most pole positions in AWS history V.Laguckas could not add another one in this round, but still started from 2nd position and managed to lead few laps, but at the end lacked the pace for anything better than 3rd place finish.

First round results of course are directly tranfered into league table and positions are no different now - R.Kardol leads Silva, but just by 1 point as the runner up scored 2 bonus points from this round. V.Laguckas is 5 points behind series leader. Same situation is also in Cross Challenge table and the brand new Megawatt Award table.

2nd place finisher Silva is leading rookie standings by 9 points over Thehemuli, who is closelly followed by TimDC.

2 top5 finishes has put 2-time teams champions Last Lap Motorsports in teams championship lead after 1st round,7 points ahead of defending champions S1dus,another point back are both Rotaryon Esport and series hosts RGA. The 5-time and also defending nations champions Lithuania leads the table once again and are 7 points ahead of Finland. Netherlands is 3rd just 1 point behind 2nd position.

2 weeks after round 1 AWS will return to more classic racing as the schedule will feature one of 2 rounds that has been in series every single year, this time running the FXR at South City's Chicane Route - 40 laps around the short course will result in 117 kilometers race distance.
