Strong performace from K.Leu at Kyoto Ring National

The fifth round of Apex Cup season 2 was held on Friday the 22th of April on Kyoto Ring National with the FZ50 and RaceAbout.

While the FZ5 was faster on a single lap, the RAC seemed to perform better on the longer run. This promised some interesting strategies and car choices. Championship candidates K.Leu from Concept Racing and J.Basford from My3id Gaming decided to drive with the FZ5, while R.v.Buren from ineX Racing 2 and J.Holmes from ineX Racing decided to race with the RAC.

Qualifying was close in front with swapping positions all the time during the session. K.Leu drove a good second lap with a time of 1:54.07, which made him one of the drivers that would fight for pole position. However, halfway through the session it was A.Azpiazu from Lanzarote Racing Team who set a great time of 1:53.90. This would give him the pole position in his first Apex Cup race. R.v.Buren went for third place with the same time as K.Leu, but he managed a 1:53.99(0.08 faster than the current world record) some laps later, which pushed him up to second on the grid. K.Leu took the third spot after beating his earlier time by 0.07 second. S.Catell and J.Holmes from ineX Racing took 4th and 6th respectively, while the championship leader J.Basford took the fifth place.

The sprint race of 8 laps started cleanly with only a collision in the back between L.Solfrank from White Tiger Express Motorsports and A.Pavars from Sonicrealms Racing. A total of 9 drivers would get a drive-trough because of missing the skin deadline, including all drivers from ineX Racing. For some mysterious reason the leader of the race (A.Azpiazu) drove into the pitlane in lap 2, even though he didn't have a penalty. This would destroy his chances for a podium place and so gave the lead to K.Leu. My3id Gaming drivers J.Basford, D.Williams and N.Dakovic from My3id Gaming 2 benefited greatly from the drive-throughs of the other drivers and so finished in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. K.Leu won the sprint race without to much trouble. Y.Laprevotte from Tiger Express Motorsports, J.Dohnalik from APR Team and S.Baker from Concept Racing 2 took the last points in the sprint race. R.v.Buren and J.Holmes finished 9th and 10th after serving their penalties. This meant they would start on the front row in the feature race.

As the feature race of 24 laps got under way, R.v.Buren was able to pass J.Holmes in the first corner of the opening lap. This meant he was leading the race without much pressure from behind. D.Jundt who started in third lost several position in the first part of the race which made him finish 10th in the end. D.Williams had a great start and made his way up to 3rd in the first lap after starting from 8th. K.Leu, S.Cattell and J.Basford gradually fought their ways up the grid. Meanwhile the FZ5 drivers were struggling with their tires compared to the RAC drivers. The first pit stops took place around halfway into the race, which made it interesting were they would get back on the grid once the other drivers stopped. N.Dakovic and S.Cattell were battling almost the whole race for 3rd place after D.Williams crashed into the barrier after contact with J.Holmes. When R.v.Buren and J.Holmes made their mandatory pit-stops N.Dakovic was even leading the race for a few laps, unfortunatelly he messed up his pit-stop in lap 23 which dropped him back to 7th in the end. D.Williams put in some fast laps after his relatively early pit-stop in lap 17, this made him overtake S.Cattell and so he retook 3rd. R.v.Buren took the win closely followed by J.Holmes in 2nd. K.Leu finished 4th, 10 seconds behind the winner of the race. S.Cattell and J.Basford took the 5th and 6th place in the end. A.Pavars and S.Jurvansuu were the last two drivers that finished in the points.

J.Basford is still leading the drivers championship over R.v.Buren and J.Holmes. My3id Gaming extends it's lead in the team championship with ineX Racing and ineX Racing 2 behind them.

We look forward to the next round which will be held on the 6th of Mayl, on Aston Cadet Reversed with the MRT5. Also this race we have live broadcasting including live commentary, don't forget to tune in at 18.00UTC!
