Blackwood 200 Goes to Julien Schein as Championship Contenders Have Troubles
-Realistic NASCAR Server on October 9th 2011
The World TBO Championship Series took its third green flag on Sunday, and this, the Blackwood 200, had just as much excitement as what round number two did, and more. The first story line of the day was qualifying controversy, and there this was true in more than one way. At the conclusion of qualifying the 03 of Karl Raudsepp and the 16 of Andris Pavars were announced to have been penalized two tenths of a second on their qualifying times due to taking laps without restrictions on their XRT’s. However, during grid stacking Pavars informally filed an appeal to the rules saying quote, “…nothing about penalties [plus] I got a faster lap with handicap [than what I did without.]” Race Control Reviewed qualifying briefly, and found that Pavars, unlike Raudsepp, had turned a quicker lap with restriction than what he did without, and therefore via the Realistic NASCAR Rule Book (Section 7.4) the penalty given was void.
This was not the only controversy arising between qualifying and the race. The pole sitter for this week’s event was put under speculation by the participants of the series for his use of “button shifting”. This prompted the pole sitter, #75 Michel He, to withdraw from the event. “His lagging wouldn’t have allowed him to race anyways frankly.” Race director Cameron Corns would mention later.
The green flag dropped with all in agreement with their starting spots however, and once the green flag dropped it was a very exciting race. Immediately off of the line Nikifor Dakovic took the lead from Elton Chong who got a slow start and was also passed by the number 36 of Joe Holmes.
Entering the first turn Nikifor ran the corner wide and allowed Joe to slip underneath of him, and also Isaac Price in the number 97 who made a small amount of contact with him exiting the chicane causing them both to be passed by Elton Chong, Andris Pavars, the 88 of Arturs Jonaitis and the number 46 of Julien.
Exiting the chicane on the second lap the number 93 of Edgars Pulins clipping the curbing and rolled his FXO over three and a half times and stopped on his lip to bring out the yellow flag. This broke up a battle for the lead between Joe Holmes and a resurgent Elton Chong on the long back straightaway.
On the green flag Elton got a good jump on Joe Holmes and looked like he was going to have a good battle with Joe for the lead, but entering the first turn an altercation involving Isaac Price missing the breaking zone entering turn number one sent Chong’s points leading XRT into the outside retaining wall and essentially out of the competition. He continued onto pit lane and got his car repaired and returned to the track, but at the end of the day he was only able to muster a seventh place finish. Isaac Price was given a stop and go penalty for his involvement in the altercation.
Joe Holmes, no longer having Elton Chong beating on his back bumper was able to pull away with a considerable lead.
Lap six brought trouble for the other championship contender, Nikifor Dakovic. Going through the chicane side by side with Karl Raudsepp, Nikifor clipped the curbing on the left hander and had to correct his vehicle from spinning out. This caused him to make contact with Karl’s left rear quarter panel and sent him sideways towards the outside wall on the exit of the turn. In order to save other competitors from damage Karl immediately spectated. Nikifor was able to continue, but upon further review by the entire Realistic NASCAR staff and an official protest by Karl, it was decided that the altercation warranted a drive through for the number 2 entry. Nikifor would go on to finish fourth and pick up four points on Elton Chong closing his Driver Championship points lead down to four.
The battle up front was all but over though. Team orders for My3id Gaming fell on Joe Holmes’s seven second lead on lap number forty-eight of sixty-one, and Joe dropped his position in order to give his teammate, and championship contender, Nikifor Dakovic his best chance to gain points on the championship lead. This created an intense battle over the first three positions which came right down to the final lap.
Joe Holmes found himself behind the number 46 of Julien Schein entering the first turn on the final lap, so he decided to try a desperate move and dove deep into turn 1 causing contact with the number 46 XRT and pushing him out of the road. Realizing that he made a mistake however, on exit of the chicane he allowed the number 46 to go around him on the right. This brought the number 12 of Morgan Trolle into the equation and allowed him to pass Joe.
Entering the long braking zone at the end of the long straight, Joe was able to cut below Trolle and he was able to hold him off on exit to set his sights onto Schein, but it was too late for Joe, and Julien Schein was able to take his first World TBO Championship Series win for Genuine Racing in his first World TBO Championship Series event start.
The next round will be the Fern Bay 300. This is the longest event on the schedule and competitors will be asked to take on the treacherous turns and curbing of Fern Bay Gold. Qualifying begins at 15:30 GMT, and the race will begin around 16:05.
Special thanks once again to all who helped put on this event, to our push car this week Dekojester, and to New Dimensions Racing for the use of their server.
Congratulations to Julien Schein of Genuine Racing for your first World TBO Championship Series Win in the Blackwood 200!
