The 2013 GT1 World Series, organized by New Dimension Racing, visits Fern Bay Gold this month for the 2nd round of the series. It follows on the heels of a controversial Round 1 at Blackwood Grand Prix, which saw the race shortened to 130 of the scheduled 160 laps due to server failure. Major controversy came around Lap 50 in that race, when a mistake by the administration team led to several cars unjustly being lapped. The race was also marred by several Safety Car Interventions. Genuine Racing (GT1-Pro) took the overall and Pro-class win, and Stig Breeding Program #1 (GT1-Am) took the win in the Amateur Class.
The series moves on to the tight and winding Fern Bay Gold track. It is well known for it's chicane just after turn 1, as well as several high curbs to roll cars that are not careful. Traffic can also be a major issue here, with several sections of the cours having little room for overtaking. Starts at Fern Bay are usually filled with incidents, and the risk of safety car interventions is high.
Practice times so far indicate some fast pace for the nFinity eSports and Team Vires Pro Cars, as well as the amateur car of Hellenic Racing. Hellenic use the FXR, which should be favoured around this course, its 4WD giving it extra grip and speed through the corners, and the lack of long straights helping negate its straight-line speed disadvantage.
The race week starts on Sunday, 9 December 2012, 18:00 UTC, with Pre-Qualifying. The server will be open for 48 hours; the Top 20 as of 18:00 UTC on Tuesday, 11 December 2012 will be allowed into qualifying with the Top 10 in the overall championship. Qualifying takes place on Friday, 14 December 2012 at 19:00 UTC, and the race will start at 18:00 UTC on Saturday, 15 December 2012.
