The 6th Annual Kyoto 250 is approaching. Dubbed "The Great LFS Race" and styled after NASCAR's Daytona 500, this year's 250 is coming along nicely in the preparations. Signups opened on March 15th, and will remain open until Saturday, March 23rd at 20:00 UTC. So far, 50 drivers have signed up, and a little over a dozen have met all entry requirements and been approved to attempt to participate in the Kyoto 250.
It is an event on the Kyoto Oval (KY1), and since 2008, has taken place on the final Saturday in March. Qualifying takes place on the preceding Sunday, with hotlaps followed by splitting the field into two groups to partake in 115-mile qualifying races. The front row of the Race grid is set from the two fastest drivers in qualifying. All other drivers are required to race their way in. Rows 2 through 12 of the Race Grid are filled based on the Twin 115 qualifying races. Race 1 sets the inside file, Race 2 sets the outside file. All drivers who do not earn a spot in the first 12 rows by either being one of the fastest two in qualifying, or racing their way in, must resort to hoping that their qualifying time is one of the 6 fastest of the group of drivers left. The final three rows are "Provisionals" - those who did not race their way in, but were fast in qualifying.
So far in the 6 practice sessions run, three-time Kyoto 250 Champion Phil "PMD9409" Diaz and defending champion Robin "Robendo" Friskopps have shown their strength. Also, newcomer to the event Patrick "FalconBridge" Hall has shown good speed and a potential to be a threat come race day. There are many drivers, new and old, who stand poised to try for a run at Kyoto 250 glory.
Broadcast details for the Twin 115s and the Race proper are still being worked out, so be tuned in for those as the event draws near. Qualifying Day is on Sunday, 24 March 2013, starting from 17:00 UTC. The race is on Saturday, 30 March 2013, with a green flag time of 17:30 UTC.
