It down to many things inculding; ping/ cpu speed/ server cpu speed/ packet quality/ isp congestion.

If the game server is overloaded(too many clients/stuff going on at the same time etc) people will begin to see server induced lag.

Server lag can be caused by lack of bandwidth or a slow cpu, wont matter if you have a ping of 5ms if the server cant send new data that fast.

The same can be said for the client pc, but its easyer to see.
A low frame rate can indicate lag on a client, lowering the framelimiter will alow the cpu more time to do other things.
If your pc is running slow, then your car will sink further into objects before anything happens. Speed is also a factor, the faster you go the faster your cpu needs to run in order to calculate the cars positon.

lfs uses ( i think) a physics based collision system, and a force is placed on objects upon collision. Nothing stops them from moving through each other unlike the gt games. Which use a bounding box solid surface for collison. Evan then objects can still go through each other when the framerate drops very low. (like 5fps)
Too very overlapped objects can end up placing their forces in the wrong direction, which is why thay can take off evan offline.
Pridiction errors online will cause a larger than normal force to be transmitted before you get the next update. So you start to fly, while the other person drives on as if nothing as happend.

the ping time you see will only be the minimum time for data travel, its not the full story.

you need a ping of 10ms to match lfs physics rate(100hz)
50 ms ping will give you 20 updates a second, not much is it?

When everything is working well, lfs has proven to be very good at collision/multiplayer.

No one has the 'right' to the racing line or track.
No one can force another off the track or cause them to spin.

adding any more rules to this and you end up with follow the leader. and "oh would you let me past please? OH go on, ooo your mean! please?!!!"

When you go off line to pass someone, you automaticly have less control than the other car. Expecting them to be able to abort the pass is folly.

If your on the inside of me I will give your 1 car's width at the apex, but I might pinch you down at the exit. I might give you as much room as possible at the exit, but never expect it.

When you on the outside I will give you 1 car's width at the exit, you can pinch me down. And I'll do my best not to hit you, but don't assume we won't make contact.

Driver's who expect to have the racing line(or anything while racing) will end up out of the race hammering the votekick button.

I see this as being fair without being overly restrictive.

Some people say its faster and the wr times are done with flat shifting,I lift my self but thats just me.

by the way you won't damage the engine in nr2003 by flat shifting, I did it all the time. The gearbox of a nascar is designed to take it if you rpm match no need for the clutch at all.
In lfs you still need the clutch else the sim wont change the gear, but you don't need to lift on up shift.

Lots of threads about this, have a dig through the rsc site.

nice video, but increase the setups lock to max and shift by your self lazy!

We need someone to do a foot video; someone who has a pedel clutch and who rpm matches as well.

You must go to the dark side and use IE to get this to work.

RBR has the light weel on understear effect,if you want to feel it for your self.

Oh yes 'wheel turn compensation' !!
Ok if you dont know what it does;

It will match your pc weels movments with the cars in game stearing weel when set to 1.0
This is a good thing btw, as it makes sense to match the movements it also tends to make the cars less twitchy around the centre.

I not sure that it works correctly on all weels, but its fine for dfp owners.

Set your dfp to 900 deg in the cp, now when you drive a car with less lock than your dfp. The movments will still match but your pc weel won't stop rotating when you reach the cars lock limit you also lose ffb after the limit.

If you have to turn the weel so much that you pass the cars lock limit your weren't going to save it anyway.

Set all your sets to max lock.
Banger racing in a uf with max lock is hard work

I dont think you should be switching your weel settings when changing cars, You should alter your driving to suit the car instead.

The cars are MENT to feel and handle diferently. And you will stunt the development of your driving skills if you refuse to adapt to the car your driving.

I think you should keep the settings the same for all the driving sims you have, it will make it easyer to compare them.

lfs doesn't use the damper effect you can set it to what ever you want, gtr might but I cant remember.

The most important one to have at 0% or off is the 'centring spring strength'
As the weel driver will add a fake force that pulls the weel to centre.

How about making sure the driver is alert as well?
Just about everone has hit a car who's driver is afk at the start.
Make it so you have to press a button to join the grid, rather than relying on someone going to spec before they go afk.

Nice idea.

You would need to be online for this stuff to work, an option that tell lfs that your pc is allways online will be needed.

Lfs does what you want while racing in a server allready, ie you pb gets updated and you can get the wr by typing "/w wr".

Shouldn't take much to make it work while in single player.

Well I think most of us knew that there weren't that many s1 drivers playing at the moment.

But only you the dev's will know how many s1 drivers are left out of the total that have bought lfs at some point.

If there is about 30% it may be worth doing to tempt them into paying for s2.

If its about 5% then its time to ditch the option to buy s1 and just leave the upgrade option for existing s1 drivers.

If there are only 10 s1 drivers left; give them a free upgrade! :yikes: And remove all refrences to s1...

It's a pity that this thread didn't show up before s2 was released, as I think the whole idea is mute now.

No the point was that I did NOT hit the wall or roll the car. Ie my good driving prevented that and I was able to continue without damage.

The camera switches just as I counter steer and stop the roll.
you get a better view here.

Don't get your hopes up, I dont have any editing software.
btw a sticky with links to good(and cheap!) effects editing software might be nice.
Virtual dub will only compress video and do very basic cutting and splicing, but its free.

Very nice!
I think the camera was moving about too much reative to the cars, it diluted the impactof the drifting you guys were doing.

Showing the speeds you were drifting at will also help the impact.

Case in point:
I downloaded the battlefield2 demo, If you have played it or the full game you will know you are forced to sit and watch 30seconds of ads before you get into the game

I would NOT have bought the full game if I hadn't found a way to remove them, I know the game was distributed by EA games:Its in the bin! and that is was programmed by dice. I refuse to be forcablly told EVRY time the game loads, its annoying.

Many people will be put off by credits or tests, this isn't real life you don't lose anything by being crashed.
Is it really so hard for you guys to use the vote kick system properly? :chicken:

You could stick the current track info into the pit screen,Everone will goto the pit screen at least once when joining a new track so may as well be there.
-wes-

Well for a track like aston, You would only get a blue flag warning you that cars are passing the pit exit at full speed.
Because the racing line does not cross the pit exit.

For blackwood you would get a red flag ordering you to stop before the exit, as the racing line just crosses the pit exit.
For crossing the red flag you get a blackflag and the server has an option to spectate the driver to avoid an accedent.

I ment for the flags to help drivers find a gap to enter the track safely, as I have been driven into at blackwood a few times.
The blackwood pit exit should be after the first set of bends, maybe we should get the fia on to it. :haha:

I dont like people being restricted like this , you by a game and then cant use half of it.

And its just a hastle for 'pro' drivers to blast through the tests, you should be able to use all the cars and tracks right away offline.

However I will stretch to allowing a server option to prevent drivers who haven't passed the tests(have enough credits etc) from joining.

All you elete drivers can tuck yourselfs away in a protected server and the sinners and spinners can still have some online f08 fun.

Did the credit system help much in s1? Nope . Practice is the only thing that makes a good driver.
-wes-
S2 licensed
oh no.. I thought the credit system was gone for good!
Its also possible to cheat the system, I'd rather you would have to beat a time at a track with each car, nice and easy like 1:20 in a gtr at blackwood.

Or just get rid of the restrictions and let people practice with the good stuff.

hmmm maybe, it all depends on how the aredynamics are altered in the next patch.

You only need a system like this if overtaking is next to impossible, it's both car and track dependant so yeah maybe..
