Good point, should have mentioned the downforce also. In any case, we all agree that the actual mechanical brakes don't have much to do with it

kev: well I tried SO long in the raceabout and didn't get along with it at all. I dunno, I rather prefer driving a 'well behaved' combo and trying to shave off tenths to driving something with way more power than it merits in grip and just keeping it in a vaguely straight line . I can see that it's certainly an interesting combo, though. I'll stick to trying to get under 1:01 on as club / FOX for now...

3GB a month? That's insane. My limit's 100GB and I'm bumping up against that every month...

It's possible to read between the lines and infer that Polyphony don't spend _too_ much on the licenses for the GT series, because some of the most famous (and therefore most likely to want to charge Polyphony large wodges of cash) manufacturers are missing - particularly Ferrari and Porsche. So it's obvious that they're not willing to just fork out unlimited bundles of cash. I doubt it'd work for LFS, though, because it just doesn't have the numbers of the GT series, hence it looks less like a great advertising deal for the car firms, hence they will want to charge more for the license (we need them more than they need us).

hate to split hairs, but F1 cars don't stop so fast because 'the brakes are good' but because they have gigantic eff-off tyres. Just about any modern car (certainly any modern _racing_ car) has brakes that are more than sufficiently 'good' to make the contact patches of the tyres the limiting factor in stopping power.

richy: well yeah either that or some aspiring Schumacher will go into the hairpin way too fast behind you and use you as an extra set of brakes...

sounds interesting. Maybe I'll give that combo a shot today...

yeah, that's the best strategy for SO classic. Unless one of the aliens is around you can easily get in the top few places just by driving a full race without making a major mistake. Never try and pass anyone, just hang back 25m until they stuff it into a wall and drive past at your leisure. I've won a few races in that combo, but not when one of the 41 guys is around :P

hah, easy server - i was stuck on one last week with three people lapping consistent 41s.

Quote from Spudster :has anyone got any tips on how i can get people to join?

Well, maybe if you stopped making skins and tinkering with your website and went out driving it'd help...

It's not really _that_ hard at the moment, but hey, easier is always good - nice idea.

But Shaw will sell you an HD PVR for only slightly more than the price of your soul!

But then if the advantage is that they're regional tracks no-one knows or cares about, the disadvantage is...

...they're regional tracks no-one knows or cares about . People want tracks like Monaco, Monza, the 'Ring, Suzuka (or is that just me?), Laguna Seca, Sears Point etc because they know them, they see them being driven in real life by big name drivers and it's kinda fun to drive the same circuits. Maybe it's different for other people, but personally I wouldn't get any more excited about a real track I've never heard of than I would about a good 'fantasy' track.

kev it can be kinda easy to lose track in the BF1, though

yeah. a racket ball ain't a squash ball. racketball's played on the same courts as squash, but it's not the same game, and uses different rackets and balls.

The Playstation wheel buttons may look a bit silly, but having lots of buttons is very helpful. I only see six on the momo, the PS button layout gives you way more buttons, and I use them all - the directional buttons for looking around, the l1 / l2 / r1 / r2 buttons for F9 thru F12, start for the horn, and I have things like the pit lane limiter and the handbrake mapped to the cross / square / circle / triangle buttons. I'd be a bit pushed with only six buttons on my wheel...

if momo has more buttons I can't see then this is negated, of course.

Free mapping doesn't 'destroy' any other online games, I'm not sure why it'd destroy LFS. In my experience most servers will still run the original maps plus a small rotation of third party maps which come to be widely accepted in the community - this is what's happened in every other game I've seen where third party mapping is possible. A consensus emerges about which third party maps are good enough to be worth using, and the community then makes them very easy to access, by putting up a compendium pack on a widely used community website or something of that nature. It's a fairly self-moderating system, really: if you put up a server with a combo that no-one chooses to race on, you'll change the combo, most likely.

hi swell, it's been fun racing you the times we've been online together

pete: why not try mouse / keyboard combo? I guess it'd feel weird, but many fast drivers use it...

lfsw tracks your online PBs and your hotlaps separately, so your online PB won't change when you upload your hotlap. Which sucks because I'm slightly anal so as soon as I do something online I have to do it in hotlapping too, and vice versa. Heh.

Quote from Michel 4AGE :And we have a new record:

Fastest laptime on the Nordschleife for a production car: 6:55
Former worldrecord was 7:15, yes thats 20secs difference..

Everybody thought it was impossible to do a lap in 6mins with a production car, but Dutch racing driver Michael Vergers proved it can be done.
Vergers did his flying lap in an Radical SR8, completely streetlegal. The SR8 has a 2.6 8cyl. wich produces 360bhp @ 11.000rpm. Yeah baby.
Streetlegal tyres: Dunlop Direzza D02G

Movie will be up for at least 1 week, approx. 39mB :

http://www.jpc-board.nl/Movies/6_55_lap.mpg

Just a note for anyone who missed this one before, it's on Google video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2990770163894389660 . They're also selling it on DVD at http://www.radicalsportscars.c ... lder/nord0905/dvd_buy.php . Not cheap, but it's a fun DVD, I'm quite happy with my copy. The commentary on the 'ring lap is hilarious in its understatement - as he flies down the hill towards Pflanzgarten, hardly braking, in the commentary he just deadpans "car feels a bit light here"...

This is tricky because LFS replays aren't like videotape - they're just recordings of all the control inputs you made, together with other necessary stuff (track, conditions, car, setup etc). The game runs the inputs through the game engine in real time to recreate what happened: it's not just dumbly playing back a video file. Therefore rewinding would mean running the game engine in reverse, which it's probably not been coded to do...
