+1 for Julppu. The 'no politics' rule is a good one, if it's not a rule of this forum yet, it probably should be...

You need a license, like just about any real track (except those based around public roads). The Nurburgring owners are all set up for it, they will also sell a set of detailed track elevation data to interested game developers (apparently, Papyrus (GPL), Polyphony (GT4) and whoever makes PGR all bought it). Don't know anything about pricing, though.

Are you sure at least one of the laps was valid according to the verification system?

Meh, skip the gfx card and lower your res. I play at 800x600 on a TV, which means a geforce 5200 is perfectly powerful enough...:P

Quote from thisnameistaken :Commentary is much better than ITV's feed. Do any UK channels broadcast Speed Channel's F1 coverage?

Er, you think? I always watch the TSN broadcast here in Canada rather than the Speed Channel one, so I get the U.K. commentary...the Speed guys are funnier but seem to have no idea what the hell they're talking about half the time. Anyway, none of them are a patch on Murray. Sigh.

The problem is there's just no international protocol. UK drivers mean one thing by it, German drivers mean another, U.S. drivers mean something else. I remember reading a Nordschliefe site for U.K. drivers which has a whole paragraph explaining the convention regarding turn signals there. I figure that since there's no universal understanding of them, using them will probably cause more confusion than NOT using them, so I don't.

My last gaming addiction was playing Doom for speed records. It was infamous among top Doom players that you can't play well on someone else's PC, even with your own mouse, keyboard and config. Still things felt different. We put it down in the end to odd mental stuff, voodoo, or USB controllers being different...

Thanks, PBU - much appreciated.

tinvek: I've found that doesn't really apply to the GTi, probably because it's so underpowered. PBU's WR setups, for instance, will happily run at least 20 laps of most tracks (I haven't tried any longer stints than that yet). Fast people on public servers get close to the WR times with the GTi consistently. I guess it's on the more powerful cars that you see really exotic, one-shot setups for WRs.

Not sure what you mean - all the time? Or just blip it as you turn in? I tend to go to maintenance throttle as soon as I stop braking, seems to keep the car stable and the revs up...

i'd like to give a shout to glenn67, we just had a great race for third / fourth on mercury racing team server. He pushed me all the way, but never quite had enough of a jump to get past, and to his credit didn't make any crazy moves (like I would probably have done in his place!) great driver. racing name is just 'glenn'.

Interesting - thanks. I guess that explains why you can use the same braking points with PBU's setup as you can with other setups with much higher brake strengths. Good info

Exactly. Say it's a corner where the WR guys brake down to 65mph at apex. If you brake down to 65mph, miss the line, then lose traction or hit the brakes to get control back, you're going to drop to 55mph or less at _exit_ - and exit speed is the single most important thing. If you brake down to 60 then accelerate smoothly through the corner, which will be much easier because the lower speed gives you a nice margin for error, you'll lose maybe 1-2mph over the WR guys on your exit speed. Easy to see which is best

tinvek: same thing happened to me one time. I was P3 on the grid and the guy who didn't move was P1, so it was nice and destructive. Flying cars are so pretty!

Makes sense, but it's also quite good for us newbies, one less thing to worry about. Threshold braking over the crest of that hill is a pain.

I read a blog post yesterday about the 100,000th character being added to the Unicode character set. So I'd say we've got room for a few more versions yet.

I started playing this month and used the world record setup at the time:

http://setupfield.teaminferno. ... ar_id=31&p_version=S2

it's now the second place time (PartyBoyU). I find it quite easy to handle, and I'm down to 1:34.19 hotlap time now, so maybe give that a shot. One nice thing is it has the brake power quite heavily reduced so you don't need to worry about locking up the brakes into T1.

viper: it takes you time to react to seeing the light pop up, so when you shift 'at' the light, you're really shifting after the light, i.e., after the ideal time to shift. Only by a split second (most people's reaction time when they're not doing anything else is in the 0.1 to 0.3 second range, when you're busy driving maybe it's a bit longer), but that matters for drag...

Good Lord, I'm glad I had an empty stomach when I clicked on that!

Bob: sorry about your wallet . I have HF-1s, and I'm now staying as far away from that forum as I possibly can - my bank account is thanking me for it...

you could always try pulling onto a slightly odd line (maybe middle of the track?) from the start, if you're worried, so even if the guy in front of you did have a slow start, you'll go past him not into the back of him?
