Quote from GianniC : First of all, my argument is not wrong.
Secondly, look, my friendly advice of "change your online time" is possible when the difference of timezone is less large. Obviously in your case this is not possible (which I did not knew nor bothered to look up). Or short put; sucks to be you.

The OP is Canadian and mentions North America. 6 hours behind is the US Eastern coast time and the smallest time difference except for some distant Canadian provinces. All the 48 contiguous US states are within 6-9 hours as well as most of Canada. So to whom exactly in N. America does your friendly advice go to if 6 hours is too large a difference?

Quote from GianniC : Quit complaining and making completely faulty arguments.

Well, it started with your faulty argument: "Not LFS, Devs or game faults, but your fault. Maybe you race on the wrong hours?" and "No matter what your timezone is, you can still choose when you race."

Because of work, the earliest I can race on weekdays is about 7pm, and that's assuming I don't have dinner after work, 8pm-ish is more reasonable. I'm 6 hours behind Europe, so that's 1-2am. You can check on lfsworld what is the number of racers at that time. Most of the time, if I filter out drift/cruise/demo/oval servers, there will be a couple of servers with more than 3 people. Even AS3/GTR has like 5-10 people tops. These are the only hours I can race, so tell me, how do I choose the right hours to race?? Are you seriously suggesting that I should quit a job I like just because of what is ultimately a computer game?

Quote from GianniC : Wrong, if for one reason the LFS Community is not in it's best shape it is all because of the community.

Isn't that exactly what the OP is asking? Where are the lfs players that make up this community?

4850 launched at $200 and 4870 at $300. However, even 4870 only matched gtx 260 at the time. since 5850 is supposed to beat gxt 285, and 5870 > gtx 295, with nothing from nVidia coming until at least Decemberish, the prices look very logical (and much more reasonable than nVidia's launch prices for the gtx series).
And I think that table is not quite correct, most sites list 1600 stream processors.

Anyway, just wanted to post a funny video that's been going on, one of those Hitler scene parodies, well, it's funny for those who are somewhat familiar with the latest development in the GPU market.

I just checked prices on newegg and:
- the cheapest way to have 4GB of ddr800 (the same speed as in studio 15) is 2x $25 = $50
- the cheapest way to have 6GB is $25+$170 (the cheapest 4gb module) = $195.
Upgrading through newegg from 4 to 6 would therefore cost $145, and that's assuming you can sell 2Gb for the full price.
So, Dell's $115 is actually cheaper. You could go with ddr667, that would be $105 for the upgrade...

Well, I said I agreed 4Gb is a way to go, no need for more. Just want to say that 4->6 ugrade price is not a ripoff by Dell as there's a reason for it. Though I find that Dells are generally good deals as long as there's some sort of discount deal and one doesn't start to upgrade the base package too much, their upgrade prices are pretty bad...

Quote from XCNuse : Then you can take that.. and select only 4GB of RAM, and that subtracts $115... RAM will be 1000x cheaper if you don't buy OEM, get something from newegg, 2GB of that ram isn't worth $115, I'm just saying, so if you do that, you're pretty much getting the graphics card for considerably cheaper.

It's a good suggestion to take 4GB, but it will not be 1000x cheaper to get 6GB through newegg. The reason why >4GB is expensive in notebooks is that they usually have only 2 dimm slots. This means that for >4GB you'll need a 4GB module, and these cost a lot more than 2x2GB. $115 is really a difference between 2 and 4GB modules, and not the cost of an extra 2GB.

I like Studio 15 too, though I'm skeptical about 1080p on a 15.6" screen from the above system. I mean, text and stuff look very small on a 10" netbook, and this is significantly worse, not to mention that 4570 will have some problems with 3D games at native res...

I'd take 2.4GHz CPU too, P-series has lower TDP, so better battery life too in addition to more MHz.

Quote from amp88 : On the subject of other life in the universe (not on planet earth) how can you be sure there is life out there? Statistically, on the laws of probability, it's almost certain there is life out there (intelligent or not) but believing there is life out there without any proof of it (which we don't have at the moment, I believe) is about as silly as believing in God.

Can I see the math/logic which tells us that existence of life elsewhere is highly probable/almost certain? Don't tell me it's Drake's formula...

You have a home button and you can middle-click it - it will open a new tab with your home page. I would prefer that over just new tab anyway, most of the time I want to google something (google of course being the home page).

Quote from dawesdust_12 :Well, I'm just saying. To add basic features like a "speed dial" which Chrome, Safari and Opera already has requires a slow and buggy addon? Smooth Scrolling? Need a plugin for that too.

Smooth scrolling is purely cosmetic feature from my point of view. And speed dial, what does it offer me that I can't get via bookmarks toolbar which is exactly one click?
I actually appreciate that FF doesn't come with a million features, and I don't use any plugins as I'm yet to find any that I would find useful enough...

Quote from dawesdust_12 :You can go find a native version of wget on the internets somewhere, toss it into your windows directory and you can use it anywhere from a command line.

Aren't you missing the point here: how would you get this native version of wget "from internets somewhere"? The point is that we need something builtin that can download other stuff.

Regarding that, Windows explorer can open www pages no problem, though this is on Wins with IE, if it depends on it, it might not work...

You could also 'telnet host_IP 80' and use GET command, but you'd have to know the exact link. Not sure how to store the output either...

And that's your argument to conclude CCC and ATI drivers are crappy?
It's far more likely that the reasons are non-driver related. You said you switched from 9800GT from 3200HD. Did you use driver removal tool? Even if you did use it, are you sure you properly removed everything, many removal tools leave stuff. Perhaps LFS was printing the wrong numbers, did you try FRAPS, or some other game? Etc, etc... And besides, it's far more important what the card's performance was, than what one particular game printed out.

My dad has nVidia 6150 IGP and LFS is a lot choppier than on my 4870. Must be crappy nVidia drivers, right?

Unless it was some fishy used/open box deal for q6700, Ph2 720 is a better bang-for-the-buck CPU than any Intel quad-core, especially for gaming. And many people have been able to unlock the 4th core on 720.
And for the record, I'm not saying that Q6700 is not a faster CPU here...

Quote from Shadowww :You don't get it. When you buy game like GTA San Andreas, you own the disc. You may give it away etc.

I don't have GTA, but that's almost certainly not true. All or almost all commercial software is license based, and I bet GTA has a EULA too. And it could also have clauses that you're forbidden to sell it. Owning a physical media disc is meaningless in this context and makes no difference here.

I'd personally never buy S2 license 2nd hand, being stuck with whatever username the guy chose, and with who knows what kind of history behind it. But I do agree that one should be allowed to resell it. A lot of games do allow that too.

Quote from BBO@BSR :I don't want to insult anyone there but your devs or admins must have done something wrong.
Else everyone / every company would have gotten infected, right?

Computer with a proper password policy and current security updates, antivir/security software and secured shares can't get infected by win32/conficker A, B,C or D.

If you got infected before MS patched the vulnerability and antivir got definition updates, it wouldn't help as the virus disables win and antivir update. And guess what came first...

The problem in our case was weak password policy on the internal network not visible from outside which are only dev/qa machines located in some server room and which frequently get reinstalled and most of which are actually VMs. It was enough that one PC visible from outside got infected, and it got spread. When you have thousands of employees with desktops and laptops, there's a good chance someone will scr*w up.

Quote from boosterfire :This feels like a Y2K 2.0. Seriously.

"Oh, yes, it'll be terrible, millions of computers will be infected, the whole thing will crash, ... (skipping pointless rant)

"Oh, yes, unless you have installed a Windows update available since october '08. And unless you have an up to date anti-virus. And unless you're a total idiot who clicks on malicious links every 2 minutes. Yes, it'll be terrible."

It has already infected an estimated 10-15 mil. PCs?? And our dev machines are win 2003 with auto updates and antivir installed, and no one uses them for email or internet since we have desktops for that. And we're far, far, from being idiots when it comes to computers. A large number of the machines still got infected.

It is a bit overrated as is the case with anything media touches, but perhaps people should inform themselves a little better before posting. You can't say it's like any other worm, it created a lot of nuisance for the IT and engineers at my work, and we're far from being the only one. You can find a lot of info on the net if you search, just make sure you spell it right...

most of my sets us +0.2 and +0.5, and I can get competitive times with it. so I don't think it's that insane...

To make the output object visible in the function, you have to either make it global (declared outside of main()), or better yet, pass it to your function as a reference parameter (e.g. ostream& output).
