hmm, if there is a problem with the psu then try this:

turn the system on for about 120 seconds and then hit the reset button to cause a reboot (do not power it off and then back on). if the psu is on its way out then sometimes it can power on all the devices but not give enough juice for the cpu to turn on or the motherboard to post (causing an infinate loop of powering up), but after the psu has "warmed up" it might be able to post and/or boot windows.

if it does post/boot after a warmup then DO NOT use the pc until the psu is replaced, if the psu goes bang in a big way then it may damage any device attached to it

btw: taking out all the ram is only to test if the case speaker works

ok...

first, take out all pci cards, all ram except 1 stick, hdd and opticle drives (ide/sata and power). try post. if it still doesnt post then check the case speaker is plugged in.

plug in the power to 1 opticle drive and see if the drive boots (lights flash, it spins up, then sleeps). if the drive doesnt boot up, then swap out the psu.

if the drive did boot up then take out all ram sticks and attempt a post, if the case speaker works then it should beep continously (with brief pauses), we may not have a dead motherboard.

if its still not posting or beeping then swap out the cpu, or the motherboard.

Quote from JTbo :Ok, you should remove all drivers in fault safe mode before changing parts. Good, good, oh what, why this is bluescreening at 2nd boot.

What I'm trying to say here, that when you change some parts to some other parts mb for example, you may get working system or may not, depending from chipset and what is onboard, etc.

its blue screening because the chipset drivers werent removed properly. google sysprep, run that before changing the mobo and it works fine. ive swapped out many motherboards all without windows slowing down afterwards or blue screening

Quote from JTbo :nothing more annoying than installing drivers and trying to get windows to work, then to find out that no, it won't start working wihout fresh install, I try to delay that as far as I can

well you did it wrong then, i pretty much upgraded my entire machine (even the main hdd) without formating windows...

also, what would you prefer, wait and wait to save up for a new pc or save a little, buy a part and improve performacne a little, then get more improvements in another shorter time

Quote from tristancliffe :Yes, and I built my PC for £700 3.5 years ago, and I can't afford to make a new one (yet). Like I say, not all of us have new/good PC's. If we could we'd all run at 5000000fps, but some of us have to make do with lesser resolutions, less AA/AF, less frame rates, and all the problems they entail. Eventually we will get new PC's and all will be good, but I can't afford to buy a new PC every time my LFS fps drops below 40

you dont have to get an entirely new pc each time...

Quote from Bob Smith :I'm using this, no silly surround rubbish: http://www.m-audio.com/product ... /Audiophile2496-main.html

I'm not convinced to any differences in sound quality, I recently upgraded to this from on-board sound and even using a £40 interconnect there's only a subtle difference (running through a grands worth of stereo audio gear). That's testing high-bitrate mp3s though, don't care about all these sound technologies they keep making up for games.

you didnt notice a difference because you went from onboard to close enough onboard that m-audio card looks empty compared to a x-fi
