I have an almost identical system to DevilDriver, only difference is AMD Athlon XP 2.4GHz. I'm running 1600x1050@60Hz on my 24" Dell LCD and have framerate limited to 60fps which I usually stay at. While watching a reply with other cars and trees in the background it might drop into the high 30s at worst. He certainly has a problem.

All I can report is that I updated last night and all previous .set files work plus I installed 2 new ones and they worked too.

I wouldn't go that far, it has been a while since I last loaded LFS and I just hit Hot Lap by reflex. Still, it wasn't specified in this thread nor the included Documentation (which I read). I hope it is helpful to someone else. Or maybe I'm just illepall

Need to be in Single Player mode to load layouts - Hotlap mode does not show the option.

in addition to that, you can create a model in CAD and render it with 3DS Max

What you'll need to do is edit the rim at the mesh level. The idea is to separate the parts of the rim you want to apply different materials to. This will leave you with two objects, like rim-inner and rim-outter. They you can apply black to one and white to the other.

Select the rim, goto the modify panel, select the Editable Mesh modifier, select verticie or polygon mode, select the part of the rim you want to disconnect, and hit detach button on that same modify panel (right). Give it a new object name and apply your materials.

Quote from ORION :Put a plane underneeth with matte/shadow material and enable shadows in the light.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but then it would cover up the background picture. It would have to be invisible, but still able to receive shadows and have no reflection.

See where it says 'None' - press that and select the bitmap image. Sorry if I'm insulting anyone's Max knowledge, I just cant seem to wrap my head around this one.

Quote from Vendetta ::S Your trying to place a picture of a car in LFS to a real picture? Use the S2 veiwer for that. Then with the shadows, circle around them with the any lasso tool and press ctrl+shift+n to create a new layer. Then press press ctrl+c. Then delete everything you have selected on the layer of the car (not the new one you created) and then press ctrl+v. Then set the new layer with the shadows to around 50-60 opacity. I have a feeling im talking about something totally irellevant to what your asking. illepall

I'm talking about in 3DSMax. When I render a scene with a cool road I want my car sitting on, I set that road JPG as the environment map for the scene. Problem is there's no real surface for the car to cast shadows on since the scene consists of only a car and a flat background image, no ground object.

Quote from Sp3cTr3 :great floor material, is that standard or ?

If anyone figures out how to display the headlights please make a new thread as I cant make em appear. always blacked out like in your render

Actually they aren't blacked out, the lenses are clear and you can see a white colored shape behind the glass (and orange side-markers), it just isnt emitting any light. Thats one of the tweaks I wanted to add to this scene, as well as green neon underlighting and a nicer skin.

The floor material is a Basic Brazil Mtl with a Checker diffuse and a frensel falloff reflection - enabled as a Brazil CSG ground plane. I played with the refraction, RGB output, and reflection values until I was happy.

How do you get shadows on an environment map like that? When I use an environment map for, say, a road picture or something, the car is dangling in the air with no ground plane to cast shadows on.

Nuse how would you rate Brazil against VRay? I hear VRay is quick and has very nice results.

Quote from Psymonhilly :if ya need help with renders plz go see the guys at master skinners, they have pre made 3ds scenes and will help out where they can
i tried the tutoiral aswell and was told by the guys at Master skinners that i was trying to do the hard stuff 1st so they pointed me to easy ways to help you get used to renders and work from there.

i learn more everyday

I registered there last week and have been browsing the forum. Worst part about that site is the website address - can't someone spring for $10 to reg a domain?? Hell, I'd do a redirect from one of my hosts for free. I can never remember the address and I'm just too lazy to bookmark it

After a week of work I guess this is the first render that satisfies me. Still some things I want to tweak, though.
