Quote from P5YcHoM4N :I am unsure how they expect MOTers to test for it. But here is a quick list of the changes (copy pasta from another forum, so there are some comments in the list):

Forum post = / = reliable source.

This info came from the MOT tester magazine thing which explained what VOSA would LIKE to do.

HID's will be enforced under construction & use (must be e-marked / washers / levellers)

Wiring harness is a good idea - but you can't really inspect much of it on a modern car without taking it apart (which you can't do on an MOT...)

Airbag lights is not a bad idea, enforcable.

The chipping thing is rediculous though - no legal basis, pretty much impossible to detect on all makes for a reasonable price.

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :Also, might be worth pointing out, new MoT rules coming into force at the end of the year will fail you for having a chipped/modded ECU, after market HID/Xenon lights and a range of other silly things.

No, they wont.

WRT chipping - they'd "like to" but theres no way they can. Especially as you break no rules by remapping etc.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :Anyone who changes their car from standard, with the exception of XCnuse, gets trolled. Fact.

Disagree - XCNuse gets his fair share of haet.

It's only non-performance mods that set off the flaming, anyway.

Quote from shaun463 :Rover 25 or MG ZR ? Both hugely under-rated cars. Also, the reliability is no-where near as bad as people say - our K-Series was absolutely knackered, but the HG still didn't blow. Also due to the K-Series being so light, very economical.

Not 50+ MPG economical, nor massively cheap either.

Quote from Silverracer :Have you considered Proton?

I know they're very much looked down upon in the UK, but we used to have a couple over the years in Sri Lanka. Pretty darn reliable in my experience. Wira, Satria GTi, and Perdana V6 - never had any issues. Might be worth looking into considering the price...

Hideous to tax & insure, though.

Yes, it's all Mitsubishi underneath - but it's all 15 year old Mitsubishi underneath!

Not bad underneath... but the only one that would fit the bill would be a shed of a Wira. In fact I think this was exactly why mine sold

I think you'll find it very hard to get a "ZX5" for under a grand, being US only and all.

You can get a 500GB laptop hard drive for like £40 - I doubt you'll find a external that much cheaper.

Seems i've fixed it (bypassed the extension, and now using the OEM Apple cable)

However, getting loads of interference, so i'm going to give up

Quote from Foilpact :If it just acts as a mass storage device then it will work straight into the headunit with the phones usb wire. Takes up less space too.

Unfortunately it doesn't, would be far to easy for Apple.
Quote from Foilpact :
It might just be a dodgy extension cable, But what size of car do u have that u need 2x lol.

I've done it that way so that the cable comes out in the central cubby hole and goes back in again - as the HU has one USB input, and it's being used for the iPhone, it means I can easily unplug it and put something else in instead.
Quote from Foilpact :can u not connect the phone to the stereo without the dock and see if it works that way?

How would I do that? It works fine via 3.5mm, but I want to use the controls on the steering wheel to skip tracks etc.

The USB connection on the stereo supports plugging an iPod cable in for direct iPod control - it's the only way you can do it (and what the manual suggests).

By "dock" I mean the 30-pin dock cable that you need to use to plug it in - not an actual drop-in dock.
Quote from anik360 :2.)The Amp output was also low btw. Iphone 4 requires 1A to charge properly(you can see the amps in the wall charger itself). So I went back to my bud to get that fixed too.

Have to disagree there - it will charge from 1A (it's what my old car charger was), but USB ports on a PC are only 500mA, which is what the port on my HU is, and my iPhone always charges from my PC.

Quote from Matrixi :Old iPods (and 2G phones) used a 3.3 volt charging system, iPhones after 3G use 5 volts. Also the dock connector charging pins were changed on the phone as they dropped support for FireWire charging. Problem might be related to that.

Actually been doing some more thinking.

Why would this cause it to THINK it's charging?

And why would this cause it not to reboot when not being used to play music?

Quote from DEVIL 007 :maybe there is some overvoltage on the USB port and it cause the iphone to reboot?

Could well be - but I have no idea how to measure the voltage on the pins (I have a multimeter, but the connections are TINY!)

EDIT:... 4. For which iPhone is the dock made?

The cable is for any iPod / iPhone - I've got 4, all of them work fine for charging / syncing.

The USB connection just says "for iPod" and a list of old models - but the HU was released before any iPhone was released. I've seen an ad on eBay which claims someone used it (or one of it's sister-devices) with an iPhone 4.

Really really odd one here...

Just bought a new stereo (Kenwood KDC-W6541U), which uses a dock connector via USB to plug in your iPod / iPhone.

If I plug my iPhone in, I can access all the files on there, and it says it's charging (although from my experience, it still seems to drain - which i'll come back to in a sec).

However after ~5-10 mins of playing music, it reboots. This happens continually...

If it's plugged in, but not being used for music - it never reboots (or at least not in the ~30 minute drives I've been testing it with).

I have no idea if there are any iPhone logs that could help me track down the problem.

The only idea I have is that apparently the pins (and voltage) to charge it up changed - which might explain why it doesn't charge. But not why it says it does - and then reboot!

Connection wise, it goes from the USB port on the HU, into an extension, into another extension & then to a dock cable. I was using the same dock cable with a USB charger, charging with no issues.

The iPhone is on 4.2.1 and Jailbroken with Greenpois0n.

Any ideas?

I find the opposite... people drive like cocks in cars because they've got 1 ton of penis extension making them feel like a man.

A biker knows in any accident he's probably going to be breaking a few bones, and so tend not to ride like a cock - or at least on the routes I drive.

I also find them the most courteous road users when your "nice" to them - i.e. whenever I move over to allow a biker past in my lane I get a "thanks" about 80% of the time, versus any sort of response about 5% of the time from a car driver.

Quote from rich uk :Whats wrong with the radio trasmitters that were mentioned before? They work perfectly well and are about £20. They just fit to the end of your ipod and can be run from battery (phone, or seperate. Or via the car) They also take up no room and look nice too.

FM transmitters sound like arse.

Hate to say it, but I totally understand where S14 is coming from - OEM HU's look good, and aftermarket ones always look gash.

However, while it might be an expensive car to you, it's not withcraft - a professional audio shop will have MORE experience doing stuff like this than the VW dealership. Although personally - DIY every time. You'll learn more, know it hasn't been bodged, take proper respect of your car, and save a wedge of cash. Most cars trim isn't impossible to disassemble...

Personally, i'd get some a Connects2 kit and DIY fit it - but on the other hand trying to work around an OEM HU is a bitch, and isn't really worth it unless it does something special (i.e. Nav, iDrive etc) - I've just bought a HU that does proper iPod support (all playlists, search by artist, control from the HU / wheel controls), better sound quality than anything OEM, and it cost me £50 second hand...

Construction and Use regs say the speedo MUST be between 100% accurate, and 10% over-read. Nothing else. So manufacturers aim somewhere in the middle.
