LFS Lapper can be of some use. It checks wether a car is idle and the resets the car to spectate when it's idle longer then say one minute. It doesn't get all of them but it does help.

Quote from tristancliffe :What do you mean this has nothing to do with oval? Read the first post! It basically says I can use chase view on the oval where it's easy to cope, but on circuits where oval racers can't do it, they need additional assistance...

Oval + Chase = easy because you only need to know who is to your sides (no braking)
Circuit + Chase = difficult because you need to know who is all around you

You see? This thread is ALL about the oval and bascially admitting how the racing is easier. No phobia, just prejudice brought on by about a year of proof.

Edit: Gunn is a moderator, but he is also a player of LFS. He doesn't always have to wear his moderator hat.

Also, I notice the 'Protect the Oval Image' brigade has arrived now that someone has had the sense to mock the oval club again. I wouldn't mind if LFS Oval was ANYTHING like real life, but it's just a joke of racing in this sim.

Thats why they call it Phobia. You see it but nobody else does...

Quote from Captain Slow :either he is a oval phobic, or he has an oval phobia. he doesnt have an oval phobic. well unless he has one chained up in the cupboard under the stairs.

Lol, ok then he is an Oval Phobic suffering from Oval Phobia. Whichever you choose, the fact remains that the statement is still true.

But the question remains: is there a cure?

jtr99: good post. I only drive in cockpit view but I agree 100%

edit: Ups... takes me month so see what Plaztiks real lfs name means. Shame on me. =)

Its Plastick

We always think plastickman but never look at his real name. Took me while to figure out as well

The italic digits are fine with me. The old fond was better readable though.

It's the BF1 steeringwheel. It takes too long to read topspeed and gearnr. I'm pritty much guessing what my speed is most of the times because I don't want to crash someone It's not a biggy but we're mostly working on setups right now and it would help to see excact numbers.

On school we used to have Michelin days where they would give information about their tires. They showed footage from a camera mounted below a 205/16 in action. It looked pritty much like those screenshots above. It looked just like a giant hand was constantly trying to pop the heel over the rim. It took us a while to actually accept that that was a tubeless tire

But I don't know if modernday tires still bend that much.
Let's just all cool down...

There have been a number of posts about the hype and the double/needless posts in the forum the last two days.

Maybe we should just stop the bickering. Some of us have been with LFS for three years and have played the first versions. We were all so curious wether it would ever get there.

So now the patch for S2 comes out and the forum is a mess. It's likely that racing tonight will be a mess to. There will be a lot to complain about. But let's not forget that this is the release of the long awaited patch!!!

So let's just enjoy it. After a couple of days everything will be back to normal. Meaning the same old boring routine

Don't mis out on the fun

Enjoy.

Well done, I'd say

Quote from Becky Rose :Looking at the different points of view in this thread, when the fault in my opinion is quite clear, explains so many accidents in LFS.

I think LFS should come with a pdf of the racing regulations section of the blue book... Not that it'd help !

When you happen to talk about my comment, I ageed with you. No sarcasm there

Quote from Becky Rose :The FIA, specifically Max Mosley, did actually want to introduce a rule whereby if there was any overlap the car behind had right of way. The rule was set to come into force until it was pointed out that the guy infront only has 1 pair of eyes and they are in the middle of the car. "Significant overlap" remained the rule, and it's the rule because it works . Even with such favoratism to the car infront the last few seasons of F1 have been brilliant fun to watch.

Yeah, that makes sense. Should have thought of that before

Quote from tristancliff :Agreed, but expect to see a lot of people disagree with the bit about F1 being exciting. I do, but I don't think many people really appreciate the depth of F1 and just want banging wheel racing and cool crashes.

So intelligent people like F1. When you don't like F1 it's because your too stupid to understand it... Worse, your a wheelbanger that just likes crashes................................

Got to love those simplified point of views. I wish the real world would be so simple...

I like everything about F1 except the gossip and the actual race. But last year was a exception to that rule. And this season looks to be even better.

But I dumped my TV cause it was standing in the way... #$%@%

For me it's like this:

The head tells me the white car is at fault (I, sort off, know the rules)

The heart tells me the guy in the blue car should have his *** kicked so bla, bla, bla...

IMO there is something wrong with the rules in these kind of situations. I've always felt that when someone behind me manages to squeeze part of his bodywork in between before I reach the apex, it's my duty to give him enough room. If I would have done what the blue car did, I would have reached for my "sorry!" bind ASAP.

I like racing and I like winning but I play LFS for fun. A good race for me is a race with lots of overtaking and fighting for positions, if possible side by side. It's not that important how high I finish. I rather finish last of a group of three while all three are cheering how much fun it was, then finish first because in the hairpin I had officialy the right of way and number two is therefore now parked against the fence...

Besides, are these rules really stricktly implemented in LFS? It would be interresting to try that and see how much racing will improve... Probably a lot of exiting overtaking becomes impossible because you need such an enormous slab of metal in between there to have any right to hold your line that you might as well just stay behind. Sure there are lots of other ways to overtake but this is a basic overtaking move that is seriously hampered by the rules. I think the leader simply has too many rights in these kind of situations.

As far as real racing goes I have no hands on experience but from a spectator point of view I think this rule alone has done a fine job making racing a pritty boring thing to look at, honestly.

So the white car is at fault.
But the blue car is a lamer...
I would classify it as a typical Shumi move.

Sorry for the rant but this rule has bothered me from the moment I became interrested in racing.

Sorry for being of topic too but if you have problems with your connection you may want to wait before buying S2! LFS in an online game with little more offline content then for practice. Better to wait untill you have a good connection!

Quote from tristancliffe :sometimes, about some things, yes. Don't we all.

I don't think so. I think most people can let other people enjoy whatever they want without passing judgement. I for one have allways disliked FWD but if someone here would ask for advice on how to improve his GTI laptimes you won't find me critisizing him or claiming GTI's are boring or too easy to drive. When he likes FWD, good for him.

I can think of no other reason to give such a comment unless you have something to proof.

Quote from tristancliffe :But at other things (well, the majority of things really), I'm pretty terrible and I know it. I do however try to become vaguely good at everything I attempt, whether it be a computer game, or mowing the lawn.

Then maybe you could try to get better at putting yourself in someone else's position. For example imagine you would be new to LFS and you would ask for guidance. How would you feel when the first page of that thread would focus primairily on how much of an idiot you are to race on an oval in the first place or how boring that which you are doing is to the 'real' racers. Because that's what happened to this thread and when things calmed down a bit you came in to start it all over again.

I have to admit though, you are good at being honest. I'll give you that.

Quote from Goresh :Why are certain individuals in this community so hell bent on chasing ppl away?? Here we have someone, who, wrong or not, has found something he thinks might help others. He posts here, in good intentions, only to find himself under the gun. God forbid some actually want to assist others in improving their LFS performance. It would seem if one disagrees with this find, a more constructive reply would benefit everyone.

Exactly.

I guess he himself is absolutely flawless, never makes any mistake.

To use 'wtf' in this context is absurd.

Quote from ScarySquirrel :im really sorry to have started this, all i wanted was a couple of pointers in case i was doing something wrong. i didnt mean it to turn into an arguement.

why dont you just all agree to disagree

ps. got my MOMO

Ok, some advice:

First you may think your line is ok but it's probably not. Hooking in to the corner and preserve speed isn't just a matter of following the correct path. Its important how you steer. I call it hooking because that's how it feels. No other way I can explain it

When a car slowely closes in on you over a large distance, he had time to pick up a lot of speed. When that car is overtaking you you are one step from gettin' 'hung out to dry'. The best way to avoid it is first acknowledge the problem (so check what is happening in your mirror)then don't go too wide when he overtakes you (stay low) and immediatly position your car behind im when he's past (use your side views OFTEN). A split second can make the difference. What ever you do, don't go too wide!

Be prepared for cars that exit low. It's the most obvious way to get rid of someone. When you notice it, don't waste any time and get back in the draft straight away. Don't think you'll catch them when they come back up cause that's exactly what they won't do.

Quote from Cue-Ball :I think it's a great idea. A lot of times you find that newbies think they're slow because of their setup, not because of their driving style. Knowing that everyone is on a level playing field might address that problem.

True, for people new to the game it can be very confusing to figure out what causes them to be slower. Knowing the setup is the same, you know where you have to concentrate on. What if you don't know you should use a high nose setup for the FO8? Trying to figure out why you can't keep up with the rest may take a long time

What is allowed on the last straight before the finish of an Oval?

At the last corner, when two cars are drafting usually you get the pushing and pulling for the best position. I've noticed that some people do the slalom which makes it pritty much impossible to overtake. However, I've been intentionaly (at least it looked to me that way) pushed of the track by someone when I was only slowly moving to the side to block.

So my question is a simple one: what is considered fair play in such a situation?

Quote from Racer Y :THere really isn't enough people online at any given moment for anyone to be too concerned with what they play with.
Heck it's so bad now, I'd be happy to play with 3 other people in a 400 ping server, with them all using Key boards and being on dial up.

OFFTOPIC: That S****.

Here in Europe it's much better. At night I can choose between around 10 servers with players and a ping below 60. Living in The Americas apperantly isn't fun when you want to play LFS. It IS an online game afterall

Quote from Fonnybone :Another PSX fan here. Best controller ever. For those who care to actually
know the truth, it's analog, and not digital.

Since everyone has gone around it a few times, i might as well too
The fact that cars use wheels and pedal is not from divine intervention.
If cars started out using joysticks, we might still be using a joystick
today and you'd ridicule people who use those, eh, 'wheels'. There isn't
much holding this argument together. Ignorance brings prejudice.

Hold on a minute...

I agree that the steeringwheel wasn't chosen by merit but it did turn out to be the best solution. Joysticks and various fantastic devices have been tested but none does the job any better then the good old wheel and for obvious reasons.
- Wheels can give the driver support without false input. When you get thrown about in the cockpit you don't end up accidentaly steering into a ditch. Try using your mouse or joystick in a baja1000 race (IRL) and you'll know what I mean. A good motion simulator could render stick or mouse pritty much useless. I've been driving a forktruck with a joystick (for operating the column) for a year and the manual advised not to hold the stick while driving. I've tried it, unloaded of course, and a not anticipated bump would shift the column sideways, enough to topple a load with high CoG.
- Joys don't have seperate axis (duh) so you can accidentaly give steering input while accelerating or braking and vise versa. Wheels don't have that problem but the same goes for mouse or joypad.
- Needless to say that wheels initially allowed for purely muscle driven control. Allthough powersteering is widely used these days, the wheel is still directly connected to the front wheels giving us control regardless wether powersteering is in working order. That would not be the case with joystick, keyboard or any of the 'alternatives'.

We can use those controlers because we are not doing the real thing so I would have to agree that wheel & pedals is The Way to Go for a serious racingsim.

Nevertheless, games are for fun so I don't mind getting beaten by keyboard or mouse users. It hurts but I'm getting used to it
