Nice background!
However, I think it can be improve by matching the angle of light/shadow and the intensity of the car shadow to the image's shadow. (you got the car's shadow darker than the gate's shadow at the moment for example)
Nice job anyway.

as long as all your maps are stored in the root directory as your max file. The other way to do it is use the 'Resource collector' utility in max. it will collect all maps used in the scene and re-assigned them to a location you want. This is a very useful function, because if you do it manually, you could still missed some maps.

Quote from Reese :This is my first render and it shows the FXR
I'm new to "3D-Rendering" but I think its not that bad so i just want to get some feedback.
Just the text and the "black and white" effect from the middle I've done with PS.
Also i want to ask about that shadows on the car, maybe someone can say me where they come from!?

MfG Reese

The artifacts could be coming from the shadow map from one of the light, either you scene is too large or light is too small (one of the extreme) Try use 'Area light' or 'Raytrace' light see if the artifacts disappear.

Nice render C40Z.
May be you can edit the skin to make the number on the bonnett move down a little so it is not hidden by the air intake bit.

Let me know if you want different camera angle or some background

That skin looks like is for XRG not XRT. Look at the wheel arch and the air vent on bonnet, they are out of place. Anyway, it is not your fault, Paragon should stated which car skin it was.

You need to fix the front suspensions. The lower arm has came off the body.

On the rear view render, the '3M' logo is distorted, it seems like the mapping cordinates have been altered when you try to modify the model.

Very nice work. Nice to see a completed car with detail interior! Good work
Any thoughts of modelling the engine and other mechanical parts as well?

Where can i find Brazil, WITHOUT registering to somewhere useless?
[/threadhijack]

What do you mean exactly? So you don't want to DL from official site?
Or you want an illegal copy of it? If that is what you mean, this forum wont allow.
Why worry registering? If you worry about receiving unwanted emails, you can open an account in hotmail, and use that email address only for register.

Can't agree more Ian! They should at least get to know the basic functions of the tools by reading the manual.

you should be able to download trial version of 3ds max in Autodesk website. If that is what you are really looking for.

Quote from ramtech :Here's a little "contest" we r unofficially organising, post here YOUR 3d models of the cars you would like to see in LFS.
Rules:

-u can basically model ANY car you want as long as its not an existing one. (you can mix different cars)
-only pure 3D models
-u can post reference pics along with ur model renders
-no photoshoped cars made out of LFS existing ones
-keep ur model as low in polys as possible
-always post a wireframe of ur model
-there's no timelimit, take your time

ps. if u need a good tutorial, i would suggest searching for the "box modelling a nissan 300ZX" one, which comes in .pdf version. (u can google it).

[COLOR=red][B]EDIT: heres the tutorial i was talking about: http://s57.yousendit.com/d.asp ... DGZ83B7I5NRH25T63K3Z8T5GF

I think it is best for anyone read the very first post in the thread before they post.

Nice render.
However, one thing I've noticed on the render - the reflections, it seems 'angular', not blend in the curve smoothly. It makes the car look bumpy. I believe this BMW model is in reasonalbe size poly, it shouldn't look like that

Quote from Funnycat :Now I mess with HDRI maps

The attachement took 44(!) ...

44 mins for that render is too long, you may have set some rendering setting too high. As a highly reflective objects and under lit scene you have here, even if you turn down all rendering settings (i.e. Skylight, G.I.) the result will look almost the same. (it will be a different story if your scene objects are matt and well lit. The low sampling of G.I will show up badly.)

Quote from Davo :Looking at your previous post the red ball still doesn't look right in the brazil test, DSR certainly looks better in that regard. Is the chrome ball using the invisble ground plane method? It certainly looks a lot better.

I've tried the environment mapping and HDRI approach and it only affects the top half of the render above the horizon, the sides and bottom still look transparent on reflections so that's a no go unless I'm doing soemthing wrong, but how many envirtonment slots can there be under the material? I'm not using anything in the default 3dsmax environment setting.

The Brazil test not looking right is because the lighting and the reflection map image that still look too identical to the background image, ideally you should use a different angle of the same image.
Both Brazil, DSR and the chrome ball were using the invisible ground plane method. They were just something I quickly put together to show the theory. Once you have got this idea in mind, I am sure you can improve it yourself to achieve a better reflection.
If you look at the chrome ball, you will see the shadow of the ball is actually reflected back on the ball with the help of invisible ground plane. which is some subtle details that you won't get by just applying an environment - sphereical map.

Quote from Davo :So basically theres no easy fix without going and making a new scene with more image planes. Guess this is just a quick and dirty way of making a render with a background that looks ok until closer inspection.

It is all depend on what level of standard you want your render to be.
here is the link I mentioned this problem before.

Quote from Davo :samyip can you explain how to sort that out? No matter what I do the issue remains. It's not that visible in my renders to worry about it, but how do you fix it?

There are many ways to do this. One quick fix is go to your car's raytrace material, there should be a slot 'environment', put the same background map in that slot, and use Env. mapping - 'sphererical environment' instead of 'screen'. When you hit render, your car's reflection should look more conviencing. (one problem with that is you'll find the road is not going to reflect correctly to the car.) What you will need to do is create a plane under the car as ground and use camera mapping to map the plane, in that way, the car will pick up the road reflection in more accurate way. I have answer these to someone in the forum before, but I can't remember where, may be in '3d LFS renders'

Quote from Ian.H :Tweaked the lighting and shadows some more and used a "real car"

Regards,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Nice attempt, but I think you too feel it didn't look quite right.
For outdoor scene, it is better to use environment maps for reflection and lighting. Also the intensity of the sunlight may be too high and not enough ambient lights. (which causes too high contrast) The image you used is not a sunset shot, so your car should receive more indirect light from surrounding objects. Shadows should be more defussed, set the area light parameter to get it a bit softer may be.

Quote from sweeney :Yay, finally managed to render the background in my scene!
Ok, it's not perfect, lighting is off, car isn't in perspective, but it's close enough for me!

I've written some step-by-step instructions (in the style of Ian.H's help file included with the original scenes), so should anyone else come across this 'simple' problem of adding a background, here's how I did it (with the help of Davo and Gunn - and XCNuse, i'm sure what you're saying is spot on, but I haven't gotten that far in the book yet.. )

Unfortunately you still have the reflection issue to sort out. If you look carefully, your reflection is reflecting the 'screen' setting of the environment map, which makes your car look like transparent.

Bryce and Blender renders are OK to many people, but not to a professional standard like Mental Ray or Brazil. I saw a lot of Bryce/Blender renders have to use raytrace/reflection heavily to compensate the weakness of their shaders.

Bryce and Blender are capable to do 'some' very good 3D jobs. But software like 3Ds max is capable of doing 'much more'. It is all depend on how much you wanna pay and what your 3d requirements are, more importantly how interested are you in the world of 3D.

I have tried it on Brazil and it blur fine, either image or object blur. There could be one problem if you have a transparent object (glass) in front of your blur object, the blur will not show behind a transparent object. I don't know how to do it in Brazil, you may have to assign a Brazil transparent material to allow it to blur.

I use Mental Ray, and Mental Ray blur everything. behind a glass, also blur show on reflection as well.

Texture baking is good, especially when you try to do animations. For example the background elements and the GI of the scene etc.. It saves alot of time. The other thing you may like to use is Ambient Occlusion, It is kind of like fake GI.

You don't need 2 programmes if you do what Nuse said, because the Mental Ray renderer is came with 3Ds max, and there is no need to spend so much money for LFS renders only.
