Starting to try Mental Ray
I'm having a play with Mental Ray, as it seems to produce a lot less speckles and artifacts than Brazil.

One thing though, I've had a look at a few tutorials, and it seems every time I try and make something myself, the colours go all strange. For example, in the attachment I've added. (yes, I know the scene is ridiculous, I just wanted to try to add something of my own to something that I knew would render correctly).

The material of the XFG's body is just a copy of the plate material, with the diffuse changed to the skin bitmap. However the plate renders fine, but the red and pink parts of the car seem to be flourescent. The material is a standard 3DMax material, with the diffuse set to blue in the caes of the plate and the bitmap in the case of the XFG. There is a reflection map which is set to 'falloff' with the top part a 'raytrace' material and the bottom part black.

How can I stop the odd colours?

it could be the 'exposure control', sometimes it does make red so vaibrant
