Quote from Bob Smith :Regarding point 1, would you rather have a really vague, non-descriptive error message? Do you work for Microsoft by any chance?

My point is why do we need to see such messages at all.. "A Player is connecting" "A Player failed to connect". So what? Tell me if someone joins (and their name) by all means, but the other two are unnecessary imo.

Quote from Captain Slow :oooooooooooooooooooooooh thank you. hehe. i think il end up killing mine soon. argh its not fair i want x now. lol. btw when it does get relesed where to we download it from? the forum or the lfs website?

iirc, LFS can update itself from within the game.
Small improvement requests for post-patch X

Since patch X is imminent I thought I'd post these enhancement requests for Patch Y.

1) Please consider getting rid of the 'Player trying to connect' messages, unless there's actually a reason that people racing need to know this. (I can't think of any, but there might be). Same thing if a player fails to connect; do we really need to be told this? (But of course it is nice to know when a new player has successfully connected and what their name is, so no change to this.)

2) When you finish a race and the final position list is displayed, please consider also putting a 'R' next to their name if the player has voted to restart for the next race.

3) The player list on large servers is very long, and finding someone's name in this list can be quite a job. Please consider highlighting someone's name if they have addressed you by clicking on your name. People might ask you a question ("can i have your set please?", "what is your first split time"), and it'd be nice to easily pick out their name to respond to them.

4) I'd like some simple stats for each set I have. eg: how many miles on each course (and in total) I have done with a named set, what my best time was with it and when I last used it. Often I get into a particular combo and get a good set for it, then don't race that combo again for months. When I come back to it i have all these sets and I can't for the life of me remember what set I used to use. If I had some simple stats I would be able to see what set I'd used the most for a combo, or what set I got a good time with, and so know what set I should use. Also, a way to enter some notes about a set would be grand too.

5) When you are speccing a full race, there is no 'join' button on the menu screen. But if you go into your garage, there's a join button there (even tho clicking it won't do anything). Please consider having both buttons always present, but simply greyed out if the host is full and no space for you to join a race. And of course as soon as there is a space, both buttons would be ungreyed out and clickable.

6) There's no mention of potatoes anywhere in lfs. Please rectify this shameful omission

edit: 7) Please sort the connection list (pressing N twice) into two parts.. people racing and people spectating.

edit edit: 8) A way to have LFS automatically remove skins that haven't been _accessed_ in the last 'X' months. I go through my skins directory semi-regularly, and any skin that hasn't been accessed in the last 3 months or so I delete, which saves me lots of HD space. It would be nice if LFS did this housekeeping automagically for me.

9) <csimpok> a way to let people take your set without having to ask you for it, and you having to send it to them.

10) <Electrik Kar> In spectator mode- would be good if there was another button alongside the players name you could click, and the camera would tab to them.

Keep up the great work fella!

Don't know if this is a regression, or even reproducable, but when I set a new pb on the final lap of the race (which was also the fastest lap of the race), i got the msg saying my time was fastest for the race, but no message saying i'd set a new pb.

I was waiting happily on the grid for the green light when the person behind me did a false start and drove into the back of me, causing me to also do a false start.

I attach the replay, which is a little odd as you can see the person behind me get removed from the track after driving off before the lights were green, but then suddenly I'm shunted forward by nothingness. Is this lag or something?

I start 2nd on grid.

Scawen, would you consider putting some logic in wrt what garage people appear in if they join mid-race? A couple of times i've being doing a pit-stop and someone has joined the race and started from the garage that I'm currently doing my pitstop in. But they've driven straight out of the garage and knocked me out of my pitbox and messed me up. If someone joins midrace, could you put them in a garage who's pitbox isn't currently being used?

See this post. There's still some more debugging and testing to be done! No point in releasing a turd just because an arbitrary date has been reached. And fingers crossed the fixes will improve the 32-player experience

Normally after Alpha and Beta comes Release Candidates, and then FINAL.

Quote from Jamexing :Anyone with the slightest bit of sense would answer "don't know" to what new cars would S3 possibly have, or may just speculate for fun, but all these big "NOs" are getting silly and don't make any sense anymore.

Are people actually saying that they DON'T want new cars in S3?!?

No.

Yes. There will be wheely-bin racing, nun racing and hamster racing (no poking with sticks allowed). There will also be cheese racing, but only if eric has enough time to model the cheese.

Right, ok, so evidently I'm not as reasonably intelligent as i first thought.

Have a potato. (damnit, where's the smiley to indicate the giving of a root vegetable)
Someone explain to me about the new skins dirs

I'm a reasonably intelligent fella (don't say anything zeug ) but I'm having a real hard time understanding the new /skins/ dirs in the W test patches.

So can someone explain it to me like I'm 6 years old please?

I've got 4 skin-related dirs... ../skins/ ../skins_dds/ ../skins_x/ ../skins_y/

As I understand it, pre W test patches, I had two dirs. Now I have 4. Why now 4? What goes in the other two.

Also whilst running the W test patch, it does a load of converting (to .dds). Are there now jpg files I can delete because they have been converted to dds files, and so are no longer used?

Also also, if someone posts their hi-res skins so I can download them, which dir do they go in for my LFS to pick them up and use them?

And what dir do my personal skins go in so I can choose them in my car setup screen? (After, of course, uploading them to LFSWorld).

Thanks for any help! Free potatoes to anyone who makes sense

Quote from boosterfire :I'm not saying he doesn't care what we think. I'm saying he doesn't bother telling us what he's working on, and that, whatever anybody can come up with, is not a good marketing strategy.

This is nothing to do with a marketing strategy. Those of us who have already brought an S2 license did so because the game, although still in alpha stage, is good enough to have enormous fun with for many 100s of hours of playtime. And no new players are going to buy an S2 license on the promise made by a few screenshots of what Eric may or may not have been working on. Any new customers will surely buy an S2 license if and when Eric's work get included in a patch, and not before.

I don't know about anyone else, but I brought an S2 license in the full knowledge that the game was in an alpha state, and that there *might* be more content to come. I did not expect (nor do I demand) constant updates as to what the devs might be working on, or any future direction of the LFS project. That Scawen continues to knock patches out is 'only' a welcome added bonus. That we don't know what Eric has been working on (if anything) is neither here nor there for me. I paid my money because the content when I brought S2 was enough to justify the fun I have had (and would continue to have, even if LFS development stopped). Anything to come is a bonus as far as I am concerned.

These petty demands to know what Eric has been doing are unjustified and unhelpful imo. If he starts to release screenshots, then there will be no nice suprise, and it will only increase the pressure of demand for the new content, when it's going to come sooner or later anyway. No one has the right to demand insights into the development process of the codebase or the content. Enjoy what what you have now, enjoy the community, and bask in the knowledge that LFS in its current state is better than anything else out there on the market, and that there's (probably) more to come at some point in the future.

Quote from srdsprinter :Because Scawen said we won't get it till Y. And he hasn't even begun work on Y... = Saddness

I think he has started work on Patch Y. IIRC he's writing patch Y, and any bug-fixes/improvements that won't break compatibility are being backported to Patch X so we get some newness and (some of) the new code gets tested.

Whilst 32 players is pretty awesome, it does mean that it's harder to connect to such servers (more players (dis)connecting which stops you joining), it's harder to join from pits or spec mode (same deal) and also harder to get a majority vote to restart a race (more people to leave the race, so more can join and of course the voting gets cancelled when a new player joins). I wonder if anything can be done to improve matters here.

Yeah, i don't blame Scawen for closing it off for the time being. People don't seem to be able to read the first post and follow its instructions, or can't be bothered to read what's already been posted before jumping in with their post.
