http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyrights
from the above:
Obtaining and enforcing copyright

Typically, a work must meet minimal standards of originality in order to qualify for copyright, and the copyright expires after a set period of time (some jurisdictions may allow this to be extended). Different countries impose different tests, although generally the requirements are low; in the United Kingdom there has to be some 'skill, labour and judgment' that has gone into it.[3] In Australia and the United Kingdom it has been held that a single word is insufficient to comprise a copyright work. However, single words or a short string of words can sometimes be registered as a trademark instead.
Copyright law recognises the right of an author based on whether the work actually is an original creation, rather than based on whether it is unique; two authors may own copyright on two substantially identical works, if it is determined that the duplication was coincidental, and neither was copied from the other.
In all countries where the Berne Convention standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office. Once an idea has been reduced to tangible form, for example by securing it in a fixed medium (such as a drawing, sheet music, photograph, a videotape, or a computer file), the copyright holder is entitled to enforce his or her exclusive rights. However, while registration isn't needed to exercise copyright, in jurisdictions where the laws provide for registration, it serves as prima facie evidence of a valid copyright and enables the copyright holder to seek statutory damages and attorney's fees. (In the USA, registering after an infringement only enables one to receive actual damages and lost profits.)
The original holder of the copyright may be the employer of the author rather than the author himself, if the work is a "work for hire". For example, in English law the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 provides that if a copyrighted work is made by an employee in the course of that employment, the copyright is automatically owned by the employer as a "Work for Hire."
Copyrights are generally enforced by the holder in a civil law court, but there are also criminal infringement statutes in some jurisdictions. While central registries are kept in some countries, which aid in proving claims of ownership, registering does not necessarily prove ownership, nor does the fact of copying (even without permission) necessarily prove that copyright was infringed. Criminal sanctions are generally aimed at serious counterfeiting activity, but are now becoming more commonplace as copyright collectives such as the RIAA are increasingly targeting the file sharing home Internet user. Thus far, however, most such cases against file sharers have been settled out of court. (See: File sharing and the law)

and there were topics about people who made a teamskin for money (to be honest i can't find the topic) but that isn't the issue

Quote from S14 DRIFT :Taken from old thread.

Quote:
They aren't stealing it. You are G-I-V-I-N-G it to them. You are uploading it to a service who's sole purpose is to DISTRIBUTE IT.

The connection between stealing a physical item and this is beyond stupid. I'm trying very hard not to berate you more than necessary, but you are making it oh so very hard. I know you probably wont understand this concept, but I'll explain it anyway.

Taking a physical item from someone DEPRIVES them of said item. They LOSE something, they leave with LESS than they started with. In the case of content, they aren't STEALING it...stealing indicated theft, theft indicates loss. You have LOST nothing. You still have your skin, therefore, they are not, in fact, stealing it. Its the same with the music industry. At least though, with music, they can claim a loss, because they lost the sale. You aren't selling anything, so you have no argument. Also, Last I checked, there is no way to upload a license with the image, so you can't even claim copyright infringement. While you legally hold the copyright, without a license, it falls under "fair use" and therefor, they can use it.

As for not knowing what I'm talking about... Nope, I don't skin cars for LFS. The texture mapping is horrendous at best. I've got about 10 cars I've done...only 2 uploaded to lfsworld because the others are incomplete. As games go, the mapping of the models is very bad. A 25 pixel square on the hood is generally not the same size on the model as a 25 pixel square on the door. That's a HUGE no-no when it comes to serious modeling/texturing. Frankly, I don't feel the need to waste my time trying to work around it.

However, I do spend around 10-15 hours a week contributing to various open-source development projects. All free, all open source, and all GPL licensed (anyone can copy, modify, and redistribute any code I create at their leisure, as long as they leave my license info in the file). Frankly, I think that content creators who try to keep anyone from using their content, or only allow its use with restrictive terms, are greedy, self-serving, poor examples of humanity. Theres a time and a place to make money off of content creation, when its offered as a service, ok. Development shops, software developers, and artists that actually provide their skills as paid services are fine. People who do it for a hobby, put it out there for anyone (generally more of a "bragging" type thing) and bitch when someone uses it that they don't like are quite despicable.

If you don't want someone to use your skin, don't give it to them. Simple as that. Your argument is juvenile and defensive, which means it should hardly be taken seriously. By putting your skin on lfsworld.com, you are, in-fact, GIVING it to everyone you race with, and you are doing so without license or restriction. If you don't like it, don't upload it. If you create skins because you like it, then keep them to yourself. But thats not really it, you want everyone to see it, you want the attention, you have the need to feel recognition for your work, and that's perfectly ok, thats normal behavior in every aspect. However, unless LFS integrates some sort of license system or encryption setup, anything you upload is considered "fair use" material, and that means people can use, modify, and redistribute. The only thing they can do that would be marginally illegal, would be to profit from it...and thats still a very gray line.

Nuff said Imo.

so you cant steel music because its broadcasted trough the air?
every picture, photho, drawing or other artistic work is automatic copyrighted ( search the internet)
when i upload a skin i don't give permission to use for themselves but only to show my car properly
if i post it here on the forum than its public (unless i say its privat)
can't hepl it if they abuse this but that dosn't make it right (as with copying music ,photo's ....)
and its not the end of the world

i like the idea because it does count how it looks around the car when you race
if it doesn't , well then all the beautiful graphics that are made off the circuit and billboards are wasted time!

i think optional roll cages are extra programming ,inserting cages is far less work (are already in the gt's)
and because the others "don't" compare to rl it shouldn't bother them so why no cages?

read again i don't flame cruisers ( i did read again and you didn't either) ,
maybe only people(cruisers and non cruisers ) who come with silly reasons (in my opinion ) why there want no roll cages
but i would say it was more defending my opinion

Quote from dougie-lampkin :Actually thats a pretty good idea!

Why does (nearly) everyone seem to have a problem with cruise servers? I personally find only racing highly boring, so I switch onto cruise servers every now and then. Yet everyone seems to be flaming cruisers in this thread...We've done nothing wrong by putting a line down the center of a track, and only voiced our opinions by asking that rollcages be made optional (which I still cant see is such a big deal) ane you 24/7 racers had some sort of sissy-fit, saying its not real enough to be made optional, even though in real life it's optional whether you want to race or cruise...

Whats the big problem with "not using LFS for its original intention"? If cruise servers mean more racers join LFS, where's your problem?

TBH this thread is becoming silly, as seen in Gunn's post...

aren't you flaming the racers?
i have nothing against cruisers ,everybody his own, but i don't like it to interfere with my race experience in a race simulation (or race game as you like it)

Quote from J@tko :[off topic - slightly] Can someone change the thread title please - I was expecting people wanting a gauge to tell you how many times you've rolled your UF1/XFG over a high kerb, and scores from three judges[/off topic]

Why not have roll cages as a server option. i.e. Cruise Servers could have no roll cages and racing ones have roll cages. (Don't know about drifting) Then, everyone is happy?

sorry my fault but i didn't know how to change the title,i did correct my posts

he says i can't compare with rl but he does
he asked why i race don't for real then and i answer and wonder why he doesn't drive/race his road car for real then
just to show how "strange" (cant find a other word ) this question was

Quote from dougie-lampkin :All I have said is, it is quite stupid to introduce rollcages, unless you're going to introduce EVERY other mandatory safety feature of racing cars. And whats the problem with making it optional?

Forced Rollcage = People who don't want it unhappy

No Rollcage = People who do want it unhappy

Optional Rollcage = EVERYONE HAPPY

And also, please stop making comparisons to needing a rollcage in real life - get it into your heads that it IS a game! I want to enjoy playing it as a game (whether that be racing OR cruising OR drifting). If you want to follow all racing regulations religiously, go buy a racing car! If you're gonna keep playing a racing game, stop whining about real life!

When the devs say its a racing simulator, that means realsitic handling, physics, tracks, etc., but not necesarily realistic safety precautions! Has anyone not noticed that the drivers arent wearing any visible seatbelts? Surely that's more important than a rollcage.

we want a roll cage because every circuit going car has one ,but we shouldn't compare to rl?
and you wouldn't want a roll cage because in rl a road car hasn't one
so we can't compare with rl but you can????
i use lfs because a race car is to expensive and i can race lfs when ever i want (and there are rl racers using lfs)
if you want to drive a road car why don't you step in your car then and "cruise" around
or do you want to race it, but you can't because you don't have a roll cage (and/ or the money)
yes seat bells to! ( just edit the suit or download one and you have seat belts)
why do you think "cruisers" quit lfs when there are roll cages ?
now there are no roll cages and i (and others) who want roll cages use lfs anyway its just a suggestion to make it look more realistic

you don't want to be forded to use a roll cage
so
you force me to don't use a roll cage ?
and if it doesn't matter to you if it is not as in rl
why do you make a fuss about adding a cage then ?

Quote from Bandit77 :I totally agree with you guys. For me, personally, racing "street cars" is most of the fun of LFS - because it's hard to have the possibility in RL to do so. Yes, it's not easy to get your hands on a F1 car either - but I am not too keen on that anyway.

Is it unrealistic to race streetcars without roll cages? No. It's just not allowed in most places. If this is a reason for you (i.e. Jakg and most of all ajp71) to make it impossible in LFS, then your next step would possibly be to only allow people with racing licenses to play LFS... or shall I say "drive" LFS, as it is not a game?

if it's not allowed in most places then it's unrealistic and why is the fun out of driving a street car when it has a roll cage?
there are more cars on the road with a cage then on the circuits without

in rl a roll cage is forced up to a racer!
and a helmet and race suit is also forced up to the racers, only somebody else made a add-on
now the racers are forced to race without roll cage in the "road" cars witch is not ferry natural

Quote from dougie-lampkin :No, because if I was crusing at 100mph/+ with similar speeds coming against me, I'd probably want a helmet and race suit!

BTW, the helmet and suit can be replaced with a man in a t-shirt (which looks quite funny when you see a man in an fxr at 150mph/+ !!!), but the roll cage could not be changed.

and no rollcage? don't think the helmet would help much then

man in t-shirt?
that is an onofficial add-on and not realy in lfs

Quote from Maelstrom :What peoples want and what's the game's aiming to are 2 different things! At least on this point the devs make it pretty clear! They know where they want to bring LFS and they won't yield to the players' demands.

I guess the whole improvement suggestion thread is more to bring them idea they wouldn't have thnik of than convice them of anything regarding what LFS should be like!
