I do understand your anger, but posting the names here won't change anything, I'm afraid.

One thing you can do, is press the '-' Key to block the messages when your son is racing. That way, he will not see what others are chatting. The blocking goes away if you press it again, or type something in the chat.

Other than that, the only thing that comes to my mind is a server that was founded a while back, for that exact reason. Parents wanted to create a place for their kids to race. I don't know if it's still up, neither could I find the thread in forum regarding this. If someone remembers that, post that thread, maybe it can be reactivated..

Found a spelling mistake on http://www.500servers.com/games.php
At the bottom it days:
"Please include a brief description of what your insim application does, and how to confire it." - I think that should spell "how to configure it".

AcesHigh, I agree with you, not knowing which server you join and even worse not knowing which combo you're gonna end up with would destroy the good online experience in LFS.

On the other hand, many of the popular servers have a track rotation in place, so you can't be sure which combo will come next when you join a server (unless you know the track-rotation, of course).

So, Instead of having one server running one car and having a track rotation, have two or three that do. But don't make them joinable just like that.

Instead have some kind of relay-server, to which you connect, which forwards you to one of the servers behind it. This way instead of having one server with 38 people on it and total mayhem happening, you would have two with roughly 19 people on them each, providing still a big grid, but maybe less mayhem. Considering the proposed Division-wise joining policy, you would even end up with two servers having drivers with closer driving abilities (e.g. measured in personal best time).

As I said before you would want to keep the ability to join the server with your buddies on, which could be an automated routine depending on an yet to be implemented buddy-list-feature.

Of course you would have to administer two servers instead of one, which will lead into the same situation why CTRA closed down. So that's one point you gotta find a solution for.

I also do see the problem, that it takes away the freedom of server-choice and it also will maybe even limit the amount of combos that are busy. On the other hand, having four independent servers running roughly the same combo (e.g. different car classes) with like 2 or 3 racers each is exactly the problem described in the original post. Getting those servers together on a relay server can direct all players to one server, thus having about 8 to 10 racers in it. And I think IHR proved that different car classes on one public server can work out pretty good.

Also you don't have to make it mandatory to use a relay server. You still can join any of the available servers out there (that are not connected to a relay server, that is).

I think the idea mdmx proposed is still far from being ready to be implemented, lot of factors have to be included in the design, but it is good to talk about it.

AndRand, I back you up on the extended "meeting-room". That thing definately could need some improvement. I almost never use it, since there is never someone in there (and I am on the FM-TS3-Server anyhow when I go racing).

One way to "improve" it, is by simply removing it. Instead have like a Contact List of buddies, where you can see where your buddies are racing and join them by simply clicking on their name.

I'm gonna go to bed now. Thanks for reading and I hope this constructive discussion continues.

To figure out what interest there is, I suggest starting a poll.

For going about it, you first of all need to have a server where you can do the event.

Second you need to set a date and time (maybe include it in the poll, to see about what time people are willing to join).

Then make a post in the Leagues and Events Forum getting people to sign up for the event.

Don't forget to promote your event, to get people recognizing your event.

On the event day, be prepared to admin and not to race, since someone needs to be in control of the crowd, otherwise it's going to be madness.

Most of all: Have fun!

I hope that helped a bit.

Quote from mdmx :I think that some kind of 'gateway server' would be very nice feature. (..snip..)

I thought of that as well, but was too lazy to post it yesterday.

I see one big problem with this approach:
A lot of players (including me) want to race with their buddies. But with an automated distribution system it is pretty likely, that you end up on different servers.

Now you could argue, that buddies that like to race together might have similar PB's and stuff, thus getting connected to the same "Division", but that's not always the case.

So, you would need to also have a friends-list functionality (which in my opinion is missing in LFS anyways) to add preferences of players which you would want to be joined with.

If you plan to follow this idea, send me a pm, I might be able to help ya with implementing (but not before mid of March, I'm afraid).

I completely agree with you. I am currently having a break from LFS since I am really busy studying for my final tests.

At first I didn't really miss it. You know, Blackwood, South City, Fern Bay, Aston, KY and Westhill.. All driven a thousand times.

But as the weeks pass and my final exam gets closer I am more and more excited to get back into the seat and on the track.

Quick sidenote: I tried Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on the PS3 with a G25 recently at a friends house, and while it looks pretty stunning (Full HD), it drives (pardon my french as well ) shitty and toy'ish.. And the races I tried (about 15 of them) were fairly easy compared to LFS. (Example: You have 15 Opponents, 3 Laps on a 50 sec easy track, try to overtake all of them.. Well, after one Lap I was first and cruising my way to the finish.. )

Back to topic: I can't wait for my days to get less study-intense and thus more race-intense again. I can literally smell the tarmac going down the Straight at Blackwood, underneath the bridge (and hear the echo-sound..).

I miss it, and am desperate to drive again. Physics Patch or not, LFS still is the best Sim out there for me.

So, from my end, Heads-up to the devs (do you really say that.. well, who cares really :P ), keep up the good work. LFS still rocks.

/me is possibly a Fanboy.. well, so be it..

Best Regards,

Torben

Quote from Kristi :I think a car and a track, which they had help with can't take 1 year long....

Well, the new car introduced limitations of setups, which wasn't working well with the current game.
The new track introduced much greater detail and realism (since it is a real track being implemented).

I think implementing it in a proper way can take more than a year. Especially if you (the devs) decide to completley refurnish the phyisics engine to do so..

While you are right that LFS offers a great amount of interesting combinations, it's silly to expect that everyone drives every car an equal amount. It's only normal that some people will prefer a certain type of car. There's people who don't like driving singleseaters while there are other people who only drive singleseaters. That's just the type of cars they like to drive, and you can't say "hey, you have no right to be bored, you haven't driven the UF1 or any of the tin tops yet!".

And I bet you haven't done many - if any - laps on Westhill in the UF1, either, to give just one example Some combos just don't work.

I agree with you, that you cannot expect that everyone drives every car. I have not done it.
You are right with your bet, I haven't driven a single lap in the UF1 on Westhill, because the car is way too slow for that fast track for my liking.

That is not what I wanted to say. Sorry if it came out wrong, it was late :P

What I mean is, that people cry that they want new content, when they haven't tried at least a decent amount of the content that is there. Just because you don't like the content that is there (e.g. front-wheel driven cars) does not mean, that there is no content. There is. It is just content that doesn't suit your likings. And there is nothing wrong with that. Just use the content you like to use. But please don't come on the forums and bitch around that you are bored with the content, while there is alot more content you haven't tried. Use another sim to satisfy your boredom..

Warning, this became a pretty long post.
If you are not interested in the discussion that has been started in here apart from the "in ten years stuff", jump to [JumpSite 2].
My personal opinion can be found under [JumpSite 1].
To all the others, have fun reading and replying.

a) I bet almost every moaner here has at least one car, he has barley driven, or a track config on which he/she has done just a few laps.
If you put it together, LFS has an incredible amount of combos to try, but most drivers just stick to their usual combos and start moaning..

Get on a server with an unusal combo and start driving. Just drive around the track, get used to the car, learn the breaking points and stuff. No hotlapping yet, just simulate you get in a real car the first time and drive around an empty track. It can be a thrill with any car.

b) Many people here moan about the little fixes like languange support. Well, a language pack can be done by native speakers and be included in a day or two, so that is something you can do besides your main work-life no problem. And it is exactly those tiny little things, that get the devs a little extra money as it opens up new markets of players.

c) The Barrier/Physics Bugs: Well, for a University Project we once started developing a simple Driving "Simulator". I know first hand, that it is pretty difficult to deal with such a thing as a Physics-Bug.
We implemented an Editor with which you can place objects in the world. A Barrier you can Place in the Editor is simply a different story than the fix Barriers denoting a track.

It is something your Physics Engine produces. It is not dealt with in a week, as it can require massive restructuring and sometimes even a complete rewrite of the Physics Engine.

d) Bugs
You bought an S1/S2 licence for not even an beta Version of a game that in the current state works pretty flawlessly. I mean, I bought full developed games (at much higher prices) that had a lot more bugs and a lot more bugs that lower the fun of the game and constrain the functionality. Then one or maybe two patches were released that didn't solve a thing and the game was declared final and the next part of the series is produced...

Cause no money comes in from releasing patches..

and yes, this goddamn ****ing world runs on money. I hate that also, but at this point of time, I can't do a thing about it. That will change 2012of course , but that's not now yet....

The only major bug I can detect in LFS that constrains the functionality is the Barrier/Physics/Collision Thing. But hey:

1. Collisions between cars are naturally influenced by Lag. You will find that in any game and yes, the fact that LFS is peer to peer does not make it better. But hey, you knew that prior to buying the License, and if you didn't, well, tough shit as 510n3d has already said. The ones who can read have a clear advantage.

2. Barrier
I don't really see the problem with the Barriers really... You are not supposed to hit them. Imagine you are sitting in a real car. You would drive a lot more careful, as hitting a barrier would cost you a lot of money. Just consider that when driving in LFS. It even increases the fun and immersion of realism IMHO.

(I for example, like to get on our Fun Server, choose a combo for an hour of qualification, exit the pits and try not to have to shift+p (that is not to wreck the car) the whole time (of course for setup changes, but I DRIVE to pit-boxes first then).. Try it out, it is a lot of fun)

e) Speed of development:
As said earlier, you bought a license to an alpha version of the game (alright the not so long members for a beta... is it beta already.. dunno actually). You agreed to the game as it was. Everything else coming for free is a gift to you.. (Yes, that was said earlier.. had to mention it again, though).
If you don't like it, get lost.

The devs develop the game at their speed, as it is their piece of software. They own it. You only bought a license to use it. Remember that. The devs decide what they do with the software. And if they decide tomorrow that they stop developing and supporting it, tough shit, nothing you can do about it, get a life..

f) Opening up the game for mod-development (rFactor-Style):
Look at the server list in rFactor. There are about a million of servers with about 500 000 different mods/tracks running, and I cannot join a single one of them, because I don't have the mod and cannot find a server, that is running the mod/mods I have. I played rFactor for 2 or 3 months, almost never found a good server to play on, uninstalled it and have not touched it since.. IMO rFactor is more dead than LFS is.

[JumpSite 1]
g) I personally think, that when they came to finish the Scirocco last year, they realised, that the current state of the game can not support the improvement they were ready to implement in the game. So they had two choices:

1. They could implement it on a sloppy basis, just to have it work for the moment and have people then moan about flaws it includes (like the whole engine has with the Barrier Bug) or

2. They could postpone the whole thing, strip the game-engine down to the essential parts and basically start from scratch with all the knowledge they earned in the past years of development. That of course can not be done in a couple of months.
The outcome then might be S3. With all the stuff you guys ever wished for. Day/Night Racing, Rain, No Barrier Bug, New Cars, new Tracks, etc.pp

I personally vote for the second one. Even if I would have to pay again then. I'll gladly do it, cause the couple of bucks I payed for LFS have paid them off in over a thousand hours of fantastic racing experience. IMO LFS is much more valuable than the money a license costs.

[JumpSite 2]
So, to sum it up, I think in ten years from now we will have S3 with more cars and tracks, night racing, rain and a lot more to come. It will be the best simulator out there, as the devs are highly dedicated in achieving that, no matter how long it takes. Or we might not. That is up to Eric, Victor and Scawen.

PS to Plaztik: I totally agree, but this post is totally way too long already to even start scratching your post here.. Sorry.. We can have a chat about that on vent... oh no TS3 that is...

PPS. Merry Christmas to you all and like we in Germany say: Guten Rutsch!

So it is not really to early.

Well, there is of course also:
GTR1
GTR2
GT Legends
netKar Pro as you mentioned (I wouldn't yet call it dead, just not much used yet, a very good sim though)
Nascar Racing 2003
the good and old Grand Prix Legends
Not sure if you can call the Grand Prix Series by Geoff Crammond Sims, but they exist.
Richard Burns Rallye is a very good Rally Sim, but I believe there is no Multiplayer, since in Rallye you race against the clock anyways.

On IRacing the opinions differ. I don't think it is worth the monthly payment, unless you really want to get serious and want to race there all the time. I think then it provides good racing environment.

I personally only have Race07 (not GTR:Evo) but thats also a well done game. The Touring Cars are really fun to drive and provide good online battles, that is when you find a good server.
RFactor has a huge community creating hundreds of mods, some of them are really good. Finding a good one can be tricky, but a good resource is http://www.rfactorcentral.com/.

A generall good resource on that matter is:

So much from me, I am sure some others will continue this :P

Remember, if you get kicked /banned off a server, and you generally have replay recording on (which I think is default), the replay of the last race is named "TEMP" and you can browse to the replay folder, rename the file to something you like, like "bannedFromServerXY.mpr" and have thereby saved the replay of the incident no matter how fast it went.

Quote from Huru-aito :... more and more people online have no earlier experience of "proper" racing and that shows up as lack of respect, general misconceptions of racing etiquette etc.

I think thats a very important point.
The lack of respect and etiquette leads to total chaos on non-admined servers. As soon as you get more than say 10 cars on the track you can be sure there is one that just goes full throttle to turn one and takes out half the field. There are too many players around that have the "Need-For-Speed" Attitude. Race-Fast-FullThrottle-IamKing-TheOthersSuck...kinda stuff.
And since you simply cannot live-admin a server 24/7, not even the time it is busy (in the end, admins are also racers and want to race from time to time), the insim apps, like airo tracker helps pre-admining the server. It sorts out the total idiots (sorry for the word, not meaning anybody in specific) and tries to give the top say 15 racers a good racing experience. That it is no perfect system, no question about it.
But as you already stated, the glory days seems over.

Two things I noticed during the pacecar periods.
1. The Pacecar was going way too fast. In one period I was in Position 5 and was about half a lap down. Although the period lasted for couple of laps I wasn't able to catch up with the field. I then decided to do my pitstop which of course put me further back again (I don't expect to catch up with the field during that sc period of course).
But generally I think all cars on the lead lap (not doing a pit) should get the chance to catch up with the main pack before the green light is given agin. Or am I wrong here?
2. When one of last sc periods was restarted there was a lapped car in between the leading cars. That car getting a blue flag stayed really slow although the cars in front were accelerating in the last chicane already. As I am not allowed to pass before start-line, i had no chance but to stay behind and loose all the cars in front and getting overtaken at end of start finsih due to lack of speed on the straight. So when a race restarts lapped cars either need to stay on pace (in formation) or be allowed to pass the sc in the first place. Having a blue flagged car in the leading pack staying slow, it does not work..

Apart from that I had a lot of fun during the event. Although some of the seen driving was poor (not that I was so good myself either, but anyways). People should know how to behave during a race.

Quote from ToxicKlay :I was racing, it was about the 7th lap and I was in first. I was using chase view (third-person) and had no mirrors (because it was chase view). I went down low into the turn, and slowed down a little as to not spin. One of the [FM] guys runs into me. Just a little bump, nothing major. I was quick to say sorry and ect. However, he started a vote to ban me. And it was accepted, mostly by people WHO WEREN'T EVEN IN THE RACE.

First, if you want to use chase view. Fine with me. As long as you know what is happening around you. The Problem is, especially when you drive by yourself and have two or three cars drafting each other coming up on you, they reach you with quite some overspeed. So, it is hard in chase view to recognize them fast enough.
Your description of what you did, going down into the turn and slowing down.. well imagine what that looks like when you are the car behind trying to pass you with an speed advantage of 30 km/h......... exactly, it looks like you did it on purpose to close the inner lane and stop the faster cars from passing you. That behavior on the oval leads to a crash in 95% of the time. So, it is not tolerated, since it is an absolutely ridiculous thing to do on oval. The cars that work together are simply faster than you, and will pass you sooner or later. So, trying to stop them from doing so, just doesn't work. Instead, on the oval (at least on the FM one), you should let them by and concentrate on getting in their draft and pass them again. That will not only give you speed and time boost of quite some bit, but also gives you a better experience of close racing. Thats it what oval is about. Close racing at 290km/h with 3,4,5 or even more cars around you. It is not about the track, we know that it is only left, a left, then.. left and then.. let me think.. oh yeah, there is another small left kink to complete the lap.. (man that was hard :P) . It is about close racing, getting a rhythm and enjoying the thrill of passing another car just some inches away at 300km/h.
Oh, and before I forget it. An FM Member will never issue a vote-BAN at the first incident happening. You will get a warning first.
And, not to forget the next thing either. you said, that you were fast in saying sorry and stuff.. Since I cant remember the incident, I suppose I wasn't there when it happend, but to me it sounds like, you went to the inside, while some cars drafting tried to pass. They hit you and make you spin, or partially loose control of the car. You then quickly pressed your Sorry Bind, or typed it into chat, while still be spinning/standing/going slow on the track. If that is the case, my advice: Never do that on an oval. First Pit, Then chat. Clear the track as fast as you can, when you loose control. We react allergic to people standing / idling / spinning on the track and happily chatting with others.. thats a no-go and deserves at least a kick. Yes I know, your race was ruinied, so why bother. But it is just not fair to ruin other peoples races just because your own one is. And yes, I know it is kinda unrealistic just telepitting in a simulator. But it provides better racing for everyone.
(Man, I know my post is becoming pretty long again, but I am not finished yet)

Quote from squidhead :Made my day... thank you Big grin

Now that was some usefull input.. Thanks for wasting some more bytes on the internet!
Quote from DeKo :i use RHD in LFS, always have done. last time i was on FM, i got told to leave because i was putting myself at a disatvantage by using RHD :|

Simple thing. Sitting on the right side of the car when there are only banked left turns ahead of you, is simply not advised. You have 70kg on the outside of the turn, when you could have them on the inside, thus kinda pulling you around the turn and not outwards. I haven't seen a single Oval Set in LFS, that is set up to having the driver on the right side. And if you use one of the common oval sets circling around and have your driver on the right side, then you simply will have a disadvantage. What we try to achieve is a big field with drivers who know what they are doing and know what is happening around them. Then Oval in LFS is really good fun.

Quote from Trekkerfahrer :i know what you are meaning:
FM Members crash into you and its your fault. I have a lifetime ban on all FM Servers because i said to one FM member that he can only drive oval and nothing else..... and i know i am right Big grin

Thank you for that, another good reason to keep your ban up to the max.

Quote from FiveMagics :This isn't really directed at you, but a lot of people on this thread are blaming the op for getting rear ended. I've never raced ovals so this is a polite request for information. In regular track racing the car behind has the sole responsibility of ensuring there is room for error when tailing somebody. Is this not the case on ovals? Thanks in advance for any help.

Well in general I'd say it's nothing different on the oval than on any other track. Of course, if you try to pass someone and you either don't have the speed to actually pass him or there is no room for you to pass, you will have to lift the throttle and try to pass the next turn.
BUT: The thing on the oval is that you work together. If a car is approaching you from behind, on the straight you hold a straight line and let the car behind gain some speed in your slipstream. Then when you turn in for the next turn, you leave the inner most lane empty to let the faster car pass you. Then that car will move to the outside for the straight again and hold a steady line for you to draft. in the next turn it is your turn to pass.. and so on.. So it is not a fight for position as on circuit tracks, it is working together.
One of the coolest situations I can remember on the oval is the following:
Two cars in the lead were drafting each other. Another car was about 1,5 seconds behind them. Another 2 seconds behind was me and a mate drafting with each other.
Now, You have a 2 -1 -2 car situation. The middle car will never be able to catch the two guys in front, since they are drafting and getting about half a second a lap advantage.
The two cars in the rear will not be able to reach the front two cars, since there is more than 3 seconds difference (which is a lot on oval). Now comes the tricky part. So me and my drafting partner in pos 4and5 come up to the middle guy. That driver has two options: 1) Defending his position at all costs. The two cars coming from behind will then try to pass him and leave him beind, since he seems not to be interested in drafting. 2) He lets the two cars by and concetrates on getting in their draft making it a 3 car draft. With three cars you can get another half a second advantage over a two car draft (if you are good that is). So, the three cars together have a chance to actually catch the two guys in front now that they work together, which they wouldn't have if they would fight each other for position three. And in an 8 laps Race those decisions have to be made quickly to ensure having a chance of catching the front guys. (We actually did catch them and had a thrilling final lap with five cars battling for the win) Who then is going to win the race is decided most of the times in the last turn and the finish straight. And you will notice that most drivers most of the time dont really care who wins the race when the race itself was good. The journey is the reward.
I hope that cleared it a bit. If not, you are more than welcome to join our server and ask your questions or go on track with us and train drafting. We are more than willing to help new people out, be it a setup or general drafting experience or anything else. If you stick to our rules, are friendly and willing to learn, you will have a great time on the oval. (didnt really want to underline that part, but can't get it gone and am too lazy to type again)
Quote from TurboBlaster :Its true what the Thread opener said, i was kicked because i discuss with a [FM] Member.

I cant really remember the incident you describe (there are a lot of them). Will have to flick through my replays when I am back home. Then I can reply. But I am sure you were not kicked for discussing..

Sorry guys, my post got a bit long. There is just so much I wanna say to this. People seem to not understand what FM-Oval is all about. We always try to be friendly and helpfull. But we are just human beings. So bear with us, we all have our bad days. And imagine having like 20 new drivers spread across an evening of oval, who just join the track, ruin other peoples races, because they dont understand what is going on and do not reply at all to chat messages trying to help them. We always try to help new drivers. But if someone just does not reply, he is gone.
