FO8 onboard helmet cam
Hi all!
For the past few days i had this idea of making a (sort of) helmet overlay, to use with vids recorded from the drivers point of view. The overlay could use some work, but it's my first of this sort... As far as i know, it's a first in LFS videos with this kind of overlay (correct me if i'm wrong) and i'm pretty proud of the end result

Normally a vid recorded from the drivers point of view are crappy and boring, but in my opinion this overlay gives you more of a feeling that you're really in the car, instead of a ordinary standard in-game view. I think LFS could use a feature like this (but ofcourse a better looking one).

Anyway, I hope you'll like the vid, altough it's not of the best of quality and all..

A standing start and a extra lap in and FO8 at Westhill.

version 1

***EDIT***
This evening i've been busy with version 2! This time WITH engine sound (forgot to ckeck the box wich controls sound recording yesterday:shy. This version also has loads more 'movement' to add to the 'realism'. Also added a bit of music to accompany the engine sound and gives the vid a bit more.. i donno.. 'feeling' of some sort And something that kinda bothered me in 'version 1' was the length of the actual footage (got bored after the first lap:shy, so I shortened it to 1 'flying' lap.

Enjoy!!
Version 2
I like the idea, the helmet is alright, the quality of the video itself isn't that good unfortunetly. I think it would have been better if you had left the carsounds with a little music in the background instead of music only and for the quality I guess the only fix would be a better computer? :S

Nice concept and well enough executed though. Keep it up!

Yup, the only fix for the quality is a better (new) computer I think But I don't actually know what went wrong with the sound.. Maybe I had a setting wrong so sound wasn't recorded. In the 'original idea' I wanted the car sound plus some kind of breathing and a hearthbeat sound to give it that real feeling you're actually there.. Also i had a better overlay in mind.. with some dirt and stuff on the visor..

Maybe in the next version
Its a really nice video but when you wrote helmet cam, i thought you meant helmet cam. In this case the cam is INSIDE the helmet with the drivers face!
Thanks
Well, the 'helmet cam' refers to the helmet overlay I tried to make (working on a better one atm). But I think I've should gave it a different name "Drivers perspective" or something.
lol, iam just doing this same in my upcoming vid -,-, but i didnt knew about that u made it 2. damn now i have to remove it. -,-
Nice video!

I didn't know you were on this too I would love to see your version of it So please don't remove it
If u had the helmet leaning into corners and stuff it would been awsome

Well, that's the kind of effect LFS can provide if i'm correct, but i didn't had all settings the way they could give the best effect.
What are you editing with? Obviously something good, on premiere pro 2 you can tilt the video as well as resize, so you could leave the edges of the helmet on one layer and tilt the background (westhill) would look nice.

I make my video's with iMovie (from iLife '08) I run LFS on my MacBook via CrossOver [that's why the quality of the recorded video is pretty bad] and recorded the video with "iShowU".

Don't know if iMovie has a function to tilt/rotate the video clips.. But I thought LFS kinda made it look like the driver tilts his(/her) head in the corners as it does 'recreate' the forward motion during braking.
See first post for update!!
Personally I think the view is a bit too high. But the amount of 'look to apex' is about right. With a touch more head tilt it'd be even better... And the overlay isn't very much like looking through a helmet - I think the bottom bar needs to be darker with more 'helmet internals' detailing - seams, seals, padding etc.

But good job nonetheless
Much better like this.

I also liked your idea of adding heart beat and breathing. If you could do it, it would be awesome aswell as some blinking :P.

Keep it up though, you're improving!

(The quality though is a little :S but hey, not everyones got 1000$ to pull out for a new pc :P.)

I'm working on making a better, more detailed helmet overlay. I've been looking around the web for inspiration from games like Race 07 and GP4.

The hight can be adjusted, but the tilt is at it's max unfortunately (in-game)..

The idea of blinking came to mind too, gotta figure out how to do that though... maybe just a black frame for like 1/100th of a second or something.. Also still searching the web for breathing and heart beating sounds.. the breathing I could record myself, but the quality would probably suck..
I've been busy with the overlay this afternoon.. well.. I 'lent' one from Race07 and edited it a bit. I plan on making one myself, but this is for getting idea's on how to make one.

I think the visor is slightly too small ...

on my karting helmet the see-area is bigger i think
I think karting helmets typically have a larger aperture, whereas a car helmet, especially one optimised for single seaters, have quite a small opening. That's not far off really
Ive got a sticker on my helmed too!

Oh wow, congratulations!

Helmet cam vid is quite nice Sponge I remember Darkone made one too.. looked quite nice as well. let's see if I can find it..

Bit over-the-top with looking in the mirrors maybe, and not with the nice overlay you have, but still good for some inspiration maybe

The movements look quite realistic.. but something similar is beyond my abilities (I think it's done with that head tracking system?).

Been working on a heartbeat sound but it turns out to be really difficult I had a 1.5sec. sample which I tried to paste like 100 of them together but every time you go from 1.5sec. segment to the next you hear a sort of 'static' noise. With that every 1.5sec it gets pretty annoying after a second or 10

If anyone has a good (long, 1min.+) heartbeat soundclip (a fast heartbeat is preferred) I would love to hear about it

By that I mean ive got one too and it still delivers good sight. Even better because it stops the sunlight from directly being in your eyes.
I'm not a fan myself. What you can see in your monitor is a seriously retricted FOV compared to real life, and since your eyes are so close to the visor in real life you actually have a much much larger FOV than any helmet overlay in a game depicts.

It could just be a simple task of changing the look function in the View menu to mouse, rather than axis or steer..
