Nahh.. seriously, Bernie's blown it all wide. In his words, "We 'bought' Ferrari's loyalty. Our deal with Ferrari was that we 'bought' them so they would not go to the others."
I don't imagine that Bernie would just fabricate self-damaging stuff when he loses his cool. He'd be more likely to do something like this.. let a little too much home truth slip out.
This isn't just a little too much, though, this is a massive outburst with wayyy too much info for things to stay the same. A lot of people will be backing slowly away from Ecclestone about now. The illusion that F1 is a fair sport, for anyone that still believed that, has just been well and truly blown.
Honestly, I think that Ferrari's pitlane screw-ups more or less offset the weird stewards decisions, penalties and such.
Regarding the real battle, Massa vs Hamilton, I'd say they both performed pretty well equally in their cars. Hamilton just got the edge this year, but only by a whisker.
Yes, they paid Ferrari the extra money to keep them in F1 rather than forming the breakaway series with the other manufacturers. Nothing Bernie says there 'confirms' the conspiracy theories.
I think you're kidding yourself. To continue to believe in the integrity of F1/FIA in the light of Bernie's comments is an act of pure, blind faith.
I'd go as far as to say I think it's preposterous. It's entirely up to you what you choose to believe but I would expect to take a credibility hit if I were you, if you're going to go the living-in-denial route.
Surely this is the key phrase here....Bernie is obviously unhappy at Ferrari's recent dig has decided to hit back with what my be a slight twisting of the truth just to slap them back down into place like the proverbial dog who has crapped all over the new rug.
Bolded are the two key terms in that quote...
Bernie is fully aware of the conspiracy theories and is using that to hit back at Ferrari, the second part is not a confirmation, nor a denial, of help from the FIA apart from the money that has already been mentioned. Bernie is no fool when it comes to the press, he has them wrapped around the finger and now the pressure is on Ferrari to back down and shut up.....whats more is that he's got people (other teams/fans) going agasint Ferrari again so that adds more pressure for Ferrari to sit down and shut up.
So I think you can all pack you'rselfs on the back for going along with Bernies gameplan, he may be an old man, but the old men know all the tricks.
SamH - if the FIA released a statement confirming that they help Ferrari in every which way possible some people would still say that "nah... just a stupid conspiracy. I bet it is a McLaren fan posting a fake release".
Some people will just never believe that the red team get preferential treatment.
I wouldn't say it's preposterous. There are billions of people in the world who believe in religion. There's no point debating with you because we have different opinions. Bernie is not going to come out and say "We helped Ferrari win the championship by fixing the decisions" (how stupid do you think he is?). I'm not at all surprised Ferrari earn more prize money than some other teams (because of how much the FIA needed them to stay on), but I'd be interested to know which other teams get inflated sums of money. The facts of the matter are totally unknown to us, so any talk is pure speculations.
That Ferrari get a better deal from everyone else is not actually NEW news. It's been a fairly widely known fact, since Ferrari purposefully torpedoed the McLaran/Williams rival series a few years ago. It's also believed that that's when Jean Todt was fixed as the person to supercede Mosley, heading up the FIA. Ferrari got a lot of sweeteners to do what they did. Among them, $80M EXTRA share of F1 revenue, over and above other teams. We knew that bit already, we just didn't have a $ value for it until today.
if you read autosport this week, it's obvious that max is pissed off that the teams are for once unified against him and his dream of a spec series , normally the FIA manage to create a split and then when no agreement is reached by the teams implement their own prefered solution. however since jean todt has left ferrari, there has been an outbreak of cooperation and mutual support amongst teams due to a lack of me me me in backing ideas.
this latest "mistake" could just be an attempt to split the new cooperative spirit apart. if so then personnaly i think it will fail, for starters as mentioned previously it has been well known for years and stems back to when ferrari were struggling and needed all the help they could get to remain in F1, secondly at the moment and given the anti max feelings it will probably bond the teams against him.
however autosport also pointed out that the current right holders to the F1 coverage may decide that now is a good time to pay off their debts given the current climate by selling up and of course the best placed person to afford to buy them out is the previous owner of the rights.
obviously if it apears there may be a spilt in the teams then the rights are not worth as much so he could buy them cheaper, in which case he may be pulling a fast one, knowing the teams will stick together but also that the current media rights holders can't afford to take the chance that he has "accidently" caused a split. the teams may not always like bernie but they know that he's responsible for the money they've all made in the past and trust him so given an advanced warning they may actually behave one way in public and another in private plus of course bernie led the fight against the previous egotistical maniac in charge at the FIA during the '80s
Regardless of what the truth is or is not, it's quite obvious that Ecclestone has lost his head. It's just the poorest business sense, to make information like this publicly known.
Ferrari getting more money than all the other teams is bias towards Ferrari, whether you like it or not. I imagine that if money is so easily pushed around for Ferrari, then there is no reason to assume that other favours aren't also pushed around for Ferrari. If the cap fits ...
can you imagine the outcry if it had been discovered that the lawn tennis association had paid for Roger Federer's training, coach, travel costs, and then let him practise at Wimbledon for weeks before the tournament?
IMO there hasnt been a level playing field in F1 since schumacher joined ferrari. this makes all the non ferrari wins and championships even more deserving.
how twisted was your theory~?
no matter how the "fine" or "penalty" was handled, it was still a big dent in their budget none the less.
and not forget they havn't proved any of Ferrari information was used on the McLaren, all they proved was some conversations, which Montoya (who has ditched off to NASCAR by then) said was very usual, something along the lines of they all knew each other's weight distribution etc.
Toyota also was accused of stealing Ferrari's systems, did FIA do anything about that~? No they didn't.
even Midland managed to have on their hands DETAILED DRAWINGS of both Red Bulls and Toro Rosso cars to try and proof that both are in fact the same car, isn't that spying on your competitors too~?
luckily it is just one small part of their special deal was made known.
Ferrari getting more than others were widely known already anyway, Bernie only disclosed extra info regarding the prize money for winning the constructors, that Ferrari would've got 80mil more than McLaren.
which in theory should kind of mean Bernie should be hoping that McLaren wins the constructors too~! lol
