Quote from DeadWolfBones : Imagine people who grew up with only classical music trying to pick out the best blues musician.

Don't know, personally I listen to classical music, blues, jazz, rock, heavy metal and others... Don't care about the styles that much as long as it's live music with people who are able to perform the instrument they play - it can be drums, guitar, a fricking trumpet or voice

But of course I've got my favorite as well which I'd say is Heavy Metal.
Quote from DeadWolfBones :Kev, I love you but you sound like a typical old white guy in this thread. Rap/hip-hop is a fundamentally different type of music than rock/blues/pop. Finding groups in a genre that sound most like the music you grew up with/are familiar with/already like and then canonizing them as the "best" of that genre isn't a terribly productive way of addressing it.

The other forum I posted this to has a thread for drunk people, which was made up entirely of posts by old men proselytising for stadium rockers like Pink Floyd and other such old men bands. I think my post made a bit more sense in that context than it does here.

I don't agree that hip-hop is "a fundamentally different type of music" because it works so well in cross-over styles. I think it's more like an approach to making music than a musical style itself.
Like drifting and racing are different approaches to motorsport?

I agree 101%. I love live music, you can't beat it.
I am also a lover of Heavy Metal, more old school Metal though, like Gun's N Roses, Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath ect.
I used to be okay with rap music, now I don't listen to it much. I'm much more rock, punk and 'booty music' now. Weird combination huh?

Anyways, in fact I still like the song "Express Yourself" by N.W.A. It's one of those few rap songs that doesn't sound gritty and ghetto too much.

Great song!

For all who like A Tribe Called Quest, i can really recommend the new (2008) album from Q-Tip, called The Renaissance. It's damn good!
Scanned this thread and I haven't seen anyone mention Guru (From Gangstarr).

Did some (in my view) classics, like Full Clip, Mass Appeal and You Know My Steez.

Ive always loved hip-hop and rap. Lately, ive been listening to old school (70s and 80s rap) and i love it. I think that 50 cent and those big fellas - totally overrated trash.

Quote from Gener_AL (UK) :Busta Rhymes?

Why is it that one can busta rhyme or busta move anywhere but you must busta cap in someone's ass? Is "ho" always feminine, and "muthadoinka" always masculine, while "bitch" can be either? How many peeps in a posse, how much booty before baby got back, do you have to be all that to get all up in that, and do I need to be dope and phat to be da bomb or can I just be "stupid"? I'll not be singing over any dead mothers until I understand.
