I say the following without any intention of sounding rude: Live with it. We all have to make sure we don't run out of unlocks (you get one every week, up to a max of 2). Even with a new box every week you should be able to keep LFS unlocked.
It is not stupid, but my guess is that the game performance, loading from a flash drive would be...
...disastrous?
But then again, like has been said, it would be fine to keep a backup of the lfs folder in a spare drive (and a flash drive would do just fine), and restore it whenever needed.
Actually with LFS you can do more then with a lot of other games (LFS can be installed on 2 computers and then you can play via LAN with only 1 license - for many many other games you need to buy 2 CDs/licenses to do that or you have to pay for the online playing etc.)
And when I look at your join date it's not like you have discovered LFS a week ago and didn't know about it the unlock stuff.
You could have read the Unlock Rules and Regulations before you bought Stage 2 of the game. It's all written there.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that.
As LFS is an online simulator and mainly be sold online (downloads) I bet the devs have a real good reason for their choice of the MasterServer unlocking procedure they use (crackers/hackers etc.)
It's up to you to use your unlocks in a normal way.
Thousands of others can do it and have no problem with it.
There's your problem. Get a rig, and stick to it. If you're building or upgrading, you don't need to install windows and re-unlock LFS everytime you get a new part. That's just madness. When all your parts arrive, swap them or assemble them. Then install LFS and unlock. Even doing this, you could theoretically build 2 new PCs a week and still be able to unlock LFS on each one
Create a disk that has your 'gaming' install...
If you need to test hardware, take it out, and replace it with a clean disk on which you only have a sysprepped image. When you're done testing, restore the image, take out the drive, and reinsert your gaming disk.
Never a problem anymore. Make sure you use the [MassStorage] section with sysprep, just to keep the blue screens away when you insert a new HDD controller.
Dude, if you have the money to buy new Hardware every week, then you should have the spare money to buy another 4 or 5 LFS licences... unlock problem solved
Or you could just keep on whining and send me the money instead.. I am using a 5 year old Computer to play LFS. I would be glad to be reusing one of my unlocks I got couple of years back..
People on this planet have problems...
It's not.
Copying the whole game folder is enough for keeping the game unlocked, no matter how many times windows is reinstalled. I don't know in which files the S2 information is saved though.
I got all my LFS stuff on my iPod, weirdly it doesn't work that way for me.
I play it on my dad's laptop, uncle's PC and my cousin's PC also. That's because my rig has no HD at the moment.
If i plug it on my uncle's and unlock it there, every time i plug in again it's unlocked (note i run it from the iPod). BUT if i plug it on my cousin's and unlock it there, when i come back to my uncle i have to re-unlock.
I'm not complaining, since it doesn't happens often, im just saying that i dont think the unlock register is kept inside LFS folder.
When you unlock LFS, it stores your machine's hardware info, along with your windows license key, into a file somewhere (I don't know exactly where, but it's somewhere in your LFS folder). So if you change your hardware or OS, it locks again. That's why if you move to a different PC with an unlocked LFS, it will re-lock, as all the info won't be the same
I don't get it then. I changed my hardware completely (mobo, RAM, graphics card), formated the HDD and didn't have to unlock LFS again. Then I bought a new graphics card, installed, formated the HDD again and didn't have to unlock LFS. Later on, I bought a new HDD, formated all my 3 HDDs, reinstalled another OS (before: winxp. after: winvista) and didn't have to unlock LFS.
I changed hardware, formated the HDD and reinstalled different versions of windows many times since I bought LFS, (vista, xp professional, xp home, mobo, graphics card, HD) I even got out of windows online activation (gonna call microsoft now for activating windows ), and I've never had to unlock LFS again
I made the backups on a old HD I have (very, very old.. 40GB, it even had win 98 installed when I found it ), when I format HD, change OS or something I just connect this old HD on my pc, copy the LFS folder to C:\Program Files\Live for Speed, remove the old HD, open the game and it's already unlocked
That's why I don't see the point on this thread, I've never had problems with it.
Hmm, I don't know how LFS does it then...Whenever I change OS (I have 3 at boot, XP, Vista x86 and Vista x64) LFS locks. And when I changed my system, but kept the HDD to transfer everything to my new one, it was locked
It's a safety feature to stop people installing LFS & using/sharing there account on other computers. How does anyone know that your legit? Why not just test with software that does not have limited unlocks?
Your're asking the devs to compromise their software protection scheme for you. I think they'll need a better reason to consider such a thing than to enable you to burn through thousands of pounds of hardware every month.
I'm not saying I know a solution for your problem but I can't see how you would possibly think that your request was reasonable if you had given it some thought.
BTW, I seriously hope you aren't paying for all that hardware as paying to be a beta tester for the buggy crap that PC hardware/driver companies are well known for, would really be a sucky hobby.
I am glad there are others that have the problem too. I guess i will just live with it. I bought another PC so i can have one while my test bed is under construction. No i am not a test bed for some Company wanting to do a review of a product. I run a very sophisticated system myself consisting of the latest and greatest hardware. I test hardware for my own satisfaction nobody elses. I run my processors and videos cards under LN2(yes i am a die hard geek) hardware to me is like porn but only thing about porn is that it gets boring after a few minutes. Hardware is my Life! But every now and then i like to sit back, relax and play a few games. So i have this other PC i bought that im going to install nothing but LFS on. I do use LFS as a test bed also. LFS is very very CPU dependent. i see bigger gains in LFS with a more powerful processor than a more powerful video card.
Not necessarily. I had an old pentium 4 1.7ghz a few years ago and managed to overclock it to just under 2.2ghz. (2183mhz i think it was, how sad that i remember!) I did that with totally standard cooling, i just upped the vcore voltage a bit to stop too much heat.
I also messed around with the RAM latency timings and overclocked that as well. I only had 256mb with that old board and according to the benchmarking software i had, it came up with similar figures as about 288mb would with stock settings.
While i was at it i overclocked my old nvidia GeForce 3 Ti500 card that was in there and got about 10% or so more out of that as well.
None of them were major gains as such but i had the whole system set up like that on xp sp1 for about 2 years and it ran faster and better. I used to give that machine so much load to deal with and it never ever gave me any problems at all.
I then gave it away because i was given the one i have now, which was screwed and needed wiping due to my mate crippling it with viruses so badly that it wouldn't even boot into windows, but after a reinstall of windows all was good, and it was free, so, bonus!
Sadly, the mobo in this one ,with a p4 2.53ghz in cannot be overclocked.
A pc will, or should, shut itself down way before anything gets even close to the point that it fries itself or blows up anyway.
overclocking is an addiction for me. as long as temps and voltage are within acceptable levels its not gonna kill the chip instantly. ive already had a core i7 extreme 965 on my new motherboard at 5.4ghz on LN2. Ran it a few dozen times like that and the chip was perfectly normal when i sold it.
