If it was me, i would be finding out why AVG would not install in the 1st place, As it is a very good free AV.
Is AVG giving you some crap about registery? It's a known issue and spend some time googling and there's a guide somewhere.
Quote from S14 DRIFT :Most system optimizers and shit. Tbh you don't need much more than a registery cleaner and regularly defrag your HD.

Yep do that. And use CCleaner occasionally. Kill services you don't use, kill processes you don't use etc.
Roughly on-topic, but what are some good registry cleaners? And what exactly do they clean?

I used Regcure once and it seemed to work pretty nice. Also made my pc work alot faster.
Regcure has found over 3000 problems so far, and it's still going

Do I actually have that many reg problems? My boot time is less than 15 seconds going into Ubuntu, and ~30 seconds for Vista, and it says that's the major effect these bad reg entries have

E: Holy mother of pineapples Batman, over 4000 problems at the moment
E2: 5000, what the hell?
E3: Woot, 6000, come on 7!
E4: We have 7 Will it make it to 8,000?
E5: Of course it will Is this thing ever going to end
E6: Umm, guys, it's at 16,000 and has no intention of stopping...Is this thing wiping my entire registry or something
E7: 20,000...Wahay!
E8: Approaching 30,000...I didn't think the registry even had this many files :S

OVER 9000 REGISTRY ISSUES!

CCleaner + Service Tweaking + Avast = Win.
Screw this, it's at 40,000. To hell with it, I'm getting a proper registry cleaner

Using RegSeeker now, much easier on the eye, told me it was scanning all my HDDs, and now it's scanning the registry, with a delightful little progress bar. And at 40%, it has 974 entries, almost all of which are "unused" file extensions

On top of that, it has a nice shiny "Backup" button which was sorely missing from Regcure...

To OP, I would spend the time finding out what is wrong with AVG. If its fooked something more serious might be up with your system. If you are on pista try a system roll back to before you removed AVG if possible.

As for the best free protection against virus infections try Ubuntu

I'm betting mosts of those are just missing files/folders. Not issues really, it just cleans them out.

they search for errors in the system registry and delete them.

Yup, I let RegSeeker take care of the whole thing, it now detects ~50 bad entries. Can't say I've noticed an improvement in anything though

Wouldn't really notice an improvement. I like to think of it as an OCD housewife. Just cleans up for the sake of it.
Avira antivir is the best...
