Both HL and Quake have fairly open architectures so modders can use it like a 3D graphics engine. They're nowhere near as powerful or versatile as other indi 3D engines, but does give you the HL userbase and a load of functions and effects already to rock and roll, and if you are doing an FPS game a lot of the code is in place.

i remember that was posted yearsssssss ago, what an oldie.

Yeah old one, but for a mod it was actually quite enjoyable at the time. Wondering if there is something comparable for the source engine?
A cookie to the first person that makes a Live For Speed engined FPS
Half life is also the engine not just the game, like Counter Strike is just a mod of the HL engine.

I think i looked at screenshots of HLRally ages ago but they were crap.

I want to know how did they do a rally racing mod for a FPS action game :hide:

Simple, they removed traction on the map, which means you have to effectively counter steer to walk around. Then all they did was change the person model for a car and change footsteps to an engine.

Of course there was more tweaking involved (changing acceleration speeds and such), but it is mostly done in the map making process.
Awww...c'mon n00blets!!!! Anybody with HL2/Steam installed can download D.I.P.R.I.P for free/bugger all/gratis....

Check it out here: http://www.diprip.com/news.php5

Did I hear 'gratis' ? Does this work with the 2 HL2's of the ATI offer?
Quote from Bose321 :Did I hear 'gratis' ? Does this work with the 2 HL2's of the ATI offer?

Probably...seeing as it is just a mod for HL2! Check out the site...or d/l it through steam and see if it works...nothing to lose!

Quote from DIPRIP site :D.I.P.R.I.P. Warm Up is available for free to all owners of any Source Engine game.

'nuff said?
Quote from Bladerunner :Probably...seeing as it is just a mod for HL2!

No.. it only works with source games you have bought.
If you downloaded every source game you have for free, then you won't be able to download any free mods for it (Doesn't it make sense? Otherwise it would be almost the same thing as saying to Scawen "release LFS for free for everyone who has a nVidia or ATi card and then give us a tool to mod it for free too, so we can freely play the game you made and make and play own own mods for it too" )

If you own (i.e. have paid for) any of these games, you can download any of the Source mods completely for free (including DIPRIP): Half-Life: Source, Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Episode One, HL2: Episode Two, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, Portal.
Otherwise, you'll have to buy for at least one Source game in order to download the mods. (The cheapest one, as far as I remember, costs USD $4.99, and, just like the others, allows you to download any of the lots of mods for hl2).

My favorite mods are: Dear Esther, Weekday Warrior, HL2 Wars (requires source 2007 engine, i.e. hl2 episode two), Synergy (allows to play HL2, ep1 and ep2 online, requires the games you want to play online or doesn't require anything to play it's own free levels), Nightmare House: Remake (requires CSS), Insurgency, Rock 24. And, for those of you who want to think puzzles in order to get through a level (and die trying until you get it right), I recommend "Ravenholm".

I like Garry's Mod so much too, but only Garry's Mod 7 is for free.
Garry's Mod 11 is not free, it costs USD $9.99 (and requires at least one source game too.. depending on the mods you'll use, will also require Source 2007 engine (HL2 Episode Two), Counter Strike Source, TF2 and any other game you wish to play on GMod 11.)

It's games like this (hl rally) that shows us how flexible Valve's engines are. There are RTS, Comics, Racing games and everything using the same engine of Half-Life, Source 2004 and Source 2007.

Again: D.I.P.R.I.P. Warm Up is available for free to all owners of any Source Engine game.

Unlike some people, I do not categorize "OWNERS" in the same way I categorize "THIEVES"

IIRC, the HL2 that was 'given away' with ATi cards was a FULL, LEGITIMATE copy, so therefore it should work. FYI, there is a current deal on with certain nVidia cards that will give you the FULL LEGITIMATE version of Far Cry 2, and another that I have seen with Race Driver Grid.
Just because the game publisher strikes up a deal with a hardware manufacturer to push either of their respective products, does not mean that the freebies are in any way illegal.
Admittedly, SOMETIMES you only get a 'demo' version (example: rTractor with G25!!!), but I believe the HL2 copy was the full game. (and LEGAL!)

It does because AMD/ATi paid for the licences (well more traded) to give to owners of their cards, they are fully legal copies of HL2, just they are free. It is the same as a lot of hardware manufactures who off you all sorts of free crap bundled with your hardware, only this time they chose to use Steam rather than CDs/DVDs.

It is the full, I claimed it under a different STEAM account that I created. Now having me remember what that account was... impossible.

Quote from Velociround :If I quoted your post, I have obviously read it.
I did not say in any way that it was a illegal copy of the game. You are reading too much into my post.

The free copy was not the full game. It is just Half-Life 2: Deathmatch plus HL2 Lost Coast, and it is still available for everyone who wants to download it.
- For nVidia
- For ATi

And you can only (and I mean, only) download mods for hl2 if you have bought (i.e. paid for) a Source game. It does not work with the free downloadable content for having a "ATi" or "nVidia" graphics card.
I did not say in any way that this free downloadable content was illegal. I did not say in any way that people who downloaded this content are thieves. You are reading too much into my post.

If you downloaded the free Half-Life2: Deathmatch, Lost Coast or anything from the STEAM website because you have a "nVidia" or "radeon" graphics card, you won't be able to play any mod at all, unless you have paid for any Source game.

You are wrong. And I think you were rude.

Looks for smilie of me banging head against wall....

:banghead:

Thats better!

I was NOT talking about the HL2: Lost coast that ANYBODY could download for free...I was talking about the FULL HL2 that was bundled with CERTAIN ATi cards in a promo...(as stated as well by a few previous posters here!)

As for rude...I haven't even warmed up yet...you forget; I am a bus driver..we have specialized training in being rude!

(btw, I wasn't wrong, either! )

Edit: Of course the game that comes with the Graphics Card (when you buy the graphics card) is the full game, legit and legal game, official and it will indeed work with mods! I have many games that comes with hardware too.
I thought (as it may clearly look like) you were talking about the free downloadable content (of which I was talking about since the beggining)
Quote from Velociround :[...] downloaded .. source game .. for free [...]
[...] for free for everyone who has a nVidia or ATi card [...]

And since I was talking about these games and you quoted me, obviously I thought you were talking about them too, in which case you are wrong, they don't allow mods. Only the full version Source games allow mods, no matter from where you bought/got them (legal): came with Graphics Card, bought retail, bought via Steam Store, received gift from a friend, etc.

Ah. Maybe I got confused, I know some ATI cards came with HL2 (a code to redeem for the full version of HL2)... And I just tested (hurrah for knowing my usual usernames), and it can run mods. Whereas Valve had offers through steam that you could unlock games (Portal was one of them, and I guess HL2DM), whereas ATI actually included a code that was essentially a CD Key for HL2.

I don't know if that is such a good idea! Bullets colliding with walls or other players causing 100 feet launches into the air.
If anyone is interested in downloading free mods for Half-Life 2, these websites are pretty good:
http://www.hl2mods.co.uk/
http://www.moddb.com/games/half-life-2/mods
These websites contains many of the mods created for the game, and people can post comments on them so you can see what other people think of it before downloading. There are many different genres, one can search for any of them according to his/her likings.
Racing mods (all) | Racing mods (released only)

There's also the steam page for mods (hl1 and hl2):
http://store.steampowered.com/ ... p;term=&category1=997
(In case you are looking for D.I.P.R.I.P., you can download it here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/17530/ )

I always use these websites when I'm looking for a hl2 mod. I hope this is useful.
Quote from LFSn00b :Actually, Garry's Mod 9 is the latest free version. And IIRC there's no such thing as Garry's Mod 11, it's just a GMod 10 update.

You're right. Thank you for correcting me.
