So do LCDs, my screen came with a 50,000 hour life span, which is quite a while considering that is the claimed constant use. I have no idea how many hours it has been turned on in the 1 and a half years I've owned it, but I suspect I'd have replaced it before I even get close to 50,000 hours.
Yeah, 50,000 hours should do you for a while! At 2 hours per day, 365 days per year, 50,000 hours would take 68 years! Even if you watched it 8 hours a day it would be 17 years, and by then a replacement tv would be a heck of a lot cheaper!
You could always buy a TV and watch the stuff that isn't mindless rubbish. I don't watch much but there are still plenty of programmes worth having a TV for. British TV is probably the best in the world so it's a shame to miss out.
I went into Curry's and even with a crap signal and default garish settings one set stood out by a large margin the 42" pioneer Kuro 768 pixel set, expensive but worth it, Had mine for 6 Months now.
Viewing Blu ray films It beats any 1080p LCD set I've seen and for viewing freeview or standard broacast material the difference is even bigger, shame they stopped making them.
There was, at it's peak, 4 factories making all the cathode ray tubes for every monitor, tv, and oscilloscope the world over. Welcome to globalisation.
I know all the scripts. Not because i've seen them all or read them all, but because once you know the format everything else is pretty easy to work out. Once you've worked in TV it's hard not to be cynical about it, I could not - for instance - watch Big Brother. They produce far too many hours of programming for the low quality script writers that they have on it to pad the show out. Oh dont be thinking it's not scripted. The actors might ad-lib for much of it (which only serves to lower the quality), and they're kept in the dark about some stuff/primed properly in order to get the scripted reaction that they're after, but it is a TV show and it's as staged as Star Wars is, only it has chavs instead of characters.
Dr Who is good, I know the ending of course but I do enjoy watching that, Spooks had a good pace to it (superb director) and my personal favorite was Hustle (not the real Hustle, a lesser known BBC series simply called Hustle). It's not like I dont enjoy TV - I just dont understand how the amount of programming on it that there is is worth the licence fee. I'd much rather just rent the DVD's and watch them on computer - which is exactly what I do, totally up all the shows from last year that where worth watching - I spent £48.
When durbster suggested watching the stuff that wasn't mindless crap, I don't think he was including Big Brother in his list That's something I definitely would call mindless crap. There is some other good stuff out there though... I think it's worthwhile owning a TV just to repeatedly watch the Planet Earth series, for example.
As for the LG thing if i was buying a hd telly i wouldnt have gone with a lg but after seeing what my Dad payed for his and the picture quility with ps3 and cod5 (and i have seen it on Sony and Samsung hd tellys) I would happily have one and save the extra £200-£300 you would spend on a Sony or Samsung.
Yes, but it costs £48 to rent the DVD's to watch on computer, or £139.50 for the TV licence plus a sky+ subscription (there really is no point for somebody who doesnt watch much TV to not have sky+, as it's the only way to watch a good show when you actually do want to watch TV, as opposed to whenever it was on that you didnt find out about because you dont watch much TV) which adds another £99 install and £204 per year. Add a TV for a frew hundred quid...
No, there are actually only a handful of panel manufacturers, and the three biggest are LG.Philips, Samsung and AUOptics... Nearly every LCD-TV has a panel of those three with a bit of original plastic cover, to keep the uniqueness...
LG.Philips produces IPS panels, Samsung MVA and AUOptics something cheap...
Much as I hate getting in to stupid internet arguements, above is the claim you made. None of the other posters have substantiated your claim that ALL TVs are made by either LG or Samsung. None of them have even substantiated your claim that ALL LCD panels are made by one or other of those manufacturers, in fact they've refuted it by naming one other manufacturer.
IF you have evidence to the contrary, provide it. I know for a fact for example that Panasonic make Plasma panels as did, up until very recently, Pioneer. So that's a further two TV manufactuers that prove your statement to be wrong.
Also, just because the panels are made by the same company does in no way mean that the TVs they are used in are of the same final quality. This is especially true of digital TVs where the associated circutry and processing has a huge impact on the quality of the picture. So even if LG did make all flat screen panels that wouldn't automatically mean that LG made the best flat screen TVs, which was the premis of your argument.
I've just been offered a Hitachi 42PD5000 plasma screen for not a lot over a ton, it's sitting in Edinburgh atm and I don't want it. If you can collect from there, could be a bit of a steal going on. Second hand of course but I don't see why it wouldn't be like new. PM me for details if you're interested, I could put you in touch with the seller.
Off topic sorry, just curious - Isn't one of the mayour differences between LCD and Plasma that the Plasma can correctly show black color on screen? While LCD has to both mix the colors to get it right, but never entirerly black? Aswell as the weight? Holy shit, once helped my buddy moving in his brother's 50 inches Plasma telly, I swear, that thing is as heavy as a washing machine ..
Neverthless, most tellys are ok, so I don't see the big fuzz. Ofc if you have full soround sound system aswell as max blueray quality movies, then a good telly would prove it's worth, but most tellys will still give you a awesome good movie experience.
Also take a look at the Samsung owners thread below, (covers the model in question), seems Samsung have had some quality issues. I'd be cautious personally.
But you watch films? Read books? Listen to stories from friends? Read Internet forum?
That's just elitist and presumptious nonsense, like saying authors don't read books. TV is a fantastic medium, and I totally disagree that the TV licence isn't worth the money. It's incredible value for money - 40p a day for hundreds of hours of amusement!
You can buy a Freeview+ recorder for £80 that does exactly the same thing.
:ices_rofl Indeed.
Edit: Err, sorry. It just occurred to me how off topic I am here
Depends... there are projectors which are powerfull enough to give you a bright picture even in daylight (might give a too bright picture in a dark room however (not very eye-friendly)). Or if you have window blinds, you could always just close them... that's what i do when i use the projector during the day.
Depends on how you use it... if it's heavy usage (many hours a day) or just from time to time.
I have a VLP HS50 from Sony which did cost me a little less than 1000 Euro. The lamp has a little more than 2000 hours now. It can last for up to 3000 hours or more, but since i usually used it for quite a few hours without turning it off (long gaming nights... :razz, it starts to show. I will need a new lamp soon... which will be around 300 Euro.
If you use it as much as i do, a TV might be cheaper in the long run, true.
But when you've once experienced movies and games with a good projector/media screen setup, you will never want to go back to a TV, ever!
