I was thinking about building a custom computer and also going all out, No worrys in money. And not becuse I want to be the best or to fill my ego, Its more for that "tingly feeling". Becuse all my life I have always had the dells or hps with integrated sound and gfx and 12ms hds and ddr memory, And I have always wanted a great computer, And why not go all out and get the best and the oc the hell out of it lol. So I was wondering if my fellow LFSers could give me thoughts, Wether its good or bad. So heres what I have come up with.

I just wanted to add that it will take months and month to get the money I wont just get in it one month, also I am not rich even though I wish I were (who doesnt) but my question is, is it worth waiting all those months to get up alot of money for overpriced things, or would it be better spent on a dual core or less expensive quad core ect ect thanks

Sorry I Lied about last edit but, To hyntty it will be about $4000-4500. And so I have decided to go with Jakg's Idea, It would see more reasonable to go with a $1000-$2000 rig. I figure if its not what I want I can always add more

Needless - You need an SCSI controller, and something like 2x Samsung F1's in RAID0 would give you better performance, MUCH more space and similar cost

Very fast, but in no way good value - something like a 4870 or GTX280 is a bit slower, but with the money you've save you could by the "next best thing" in a years time or so

1250w?! You need nowhere near that much! Something like a very good 600 - 700w PSU would be enough for ANY setup on the market, and you'd get more quality with a Corsair / FSP / Fortran / PCP&C / Tagan PSU

Nice, but again overpriced - "Cheaper" memory (although no cheap-o junk) usually overclocks almost as well as Dominators, but even so memory FSB is not usually the biggest bottleneck when overclocking (although I base this of S775 DDR2 overclocking.

Wait for cheaper, more developed boards imo - usually very little seperates the £200 board from the £100 board unless your doing water / phase change overclocking.

In all honesty it won't last you that long - i'd go for a slightly slower (but much cheaper) build using 4GB DDR2, a nice 500w PSU, a second hand Q6600 and something like a P45 mobo with maybe an ATi 4870...

If you want to spend lots of cash, then spend it on something that will last you - i.e. a very nice Lian Li case or a big-ass high quality monitor.

Also "crap" refers to the amount of effort you put into writing the post, not necessarily the content/thought behind it. However I suggest you take note on Jakg's post and ignore the rest, unless you want to continue transforming my pulling-your-leg post into a full blown dramabomb.

Ok - It's an opinion it's bad but what is a fact is that you can get exactly the same performance at a much lower cost, or get perhaps 10-15% less performance for probably half the price.

Anyway, to get back to topic:

An SCSI HD will set you back about three fantastillions of your funny but worthless dollars, on the other hand it will help one chinese family to survive another day whilst another american broker could buy his next ferrari.
butzes top tip: get a normal SATA HD, they are dirt cheap, MUCH more quiet and don't turn the computer case into a red hot glowing metal ball.

I think the CPU and GPU are a bit ott too. Everytime there's a new "fastest [insert any PC component here] it's ridiculously overpriced. I always tend to take the best of the rest. It's cheap, fresh enough to be still fast, but old enough to support everything I want to do with it.

If you plan on doing some HEAVY video stuff or other serious thing with your rig, you might want to swap the "high end" Asus board with something that was designed not to shrink your dong, but to work properly in heavily used environments. I'd propose a tyan board in that case, we've had them at work with 4 CPUs and 96Gbytes of RAM each.

In the case you wanted to step down a bit your power supply is plain stupid! A 1250W PSU might take up to 600W only when idle! And like the SCSI HD it's going to be loud, hot and inefficient, apart from being overpriced and being able to shrink your Willy.

Last hint: get huge fans and proper cooling solutions if you still want to overclock. And for pete's sake don't put your PC specs into your sig once you've got it. None of us is interested in another one's e-Schlong.


I've used 3 different expressions for one-eyed snakes, affronted Americans and Chinese as well as forum members who have their Rig in their sig... Not a bad day.
