Racing rig with driver playing LFS featured on Liveleak.com
This is a pretty damn heavily trafficked web site I visit most everyday (liveleak.com). This video was featured which means its right smack dab on the front page. It was posted 10 hours ago and already has 2,500 views if that gives any kind of idea of the traffic level of the website. Pretty easy and substantial free advertising if you LFS players can keep the comment table well stocked with Live for speed support and info etc.
He doesn't know the circuit even. My guess is he's been asked to try LFS because he has that rig.
I don't know who makes that but it doesn't look very good does it, a bit slow and soft in its movement. Things like that definitely need to be enclosed for maximum effect too, or else your mind keeps reminding you that you're tilting because you have all these external reference points, and the "g-effect" of being pitched and rolled is even less effective.
You want it to feel/look like this (most impressive force dynamics video), especially if you're spending big money, and unless you have acute tunnel vision it just won't.

The fact he's using auto gears sums that up straight away. Besides, if this were about engineering talent, we'd all be designing our own cars from the ground up. Constructing them, and racing them online.
The vid now has about 20,000 views in about 24 hours and is now re-featured in the top 3 videos.
From a business/financial standpoint, to ignore or de-value the impact of such free advertising is ridiculous. Obviously few to no one that has no appreciation for or derives any pleasure from the excellent simulation LFS provides and purely just wants to be an ass is going to make it past the demo to purchase the full game. To limit the exposure of a product just because you are afraid some of the people you market to will not automatically appreciate and respect your product is self defeating.
yes, force dynamics is awesome as far as state of the art goes, but it's something like $30,000... not an option for most folks.
I, like you thought it looked a bit cheapo, so I had a good surf on this link, and discovered that the rig "doesn't look very good" because he made it himself all from easily available parts (even PVC plumbing tube) that bolt together - no welding !
It uses two car wiper motors. the software is open source.
He reckons it would cost about 800 euros in total if you have to buy everything, also mentions that the lag is partly fixed and was due to a software problem.
Supposedly there is also a revised circuit with better motor controllers in the pipeline to improve the movement further.
So it IS awesome in that it is REALLY cheap and you can make it without fancy equipment (just a soldering iron for the electronics I think).

Looking at the OP's video, an rb4 with jacked up rallycross suspension wouldn't even lean as much as that. Looking at the chair movement, he may as well be on a boat of some kind.
Anyway, i suppose any publicity is good publicity for LFS.
The leaning isn't supposed to resemble the attitude of the car in the game. It is supposed to give a sense of g-force (it pitches you forward steeply it feels a little like you're braking harder etc etc), which is why it only really works if the rig is enclosed.
So does anyone else realize that these tilting systems are limited to a maximum of 1 G?
I think the ULTIMATE way to do motion sim is to use a robotic arm roller coaster system like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoA-m5iHG9s You can definitely pull more than 1 G with that thing. Perhaps even up to oh say... 4.5g like in an F1 car.
