IKEA mail scam
http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/email_scam.html

IKEA has posted a message saying that there is an email scam going round pretending to be sent from them.

Quote :IKEA has discovered that a malicious e-mail is circulating encouraging users to install attached new IKEA home planner software. The e-mail and attached software is not from IKEA and it includes a malicious Trojan software which is installed once the attachment is opened.

Safety and security issues are prioritised issues at IKEA and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this e-mail.

We ask all receivers to delete the e-mail immediately.

Take care out there

Thanks for the heads up. What kind of mean bastard would imitate the great IKEA?
I blame 99% of customers that can't follow the instructions and make a wooden mess.

Then return it to my department and expect all their money back. IKEA would never send out emails like that anyway, they would send a bunch of code and some instructions showing how to turn it into an email. Big up to the yellow 'n' blue cru. :thumb3d:
Funny thing is, my wife went to Ikea for the first time. She said there's some neat stuff, but most of it looks like junk. So, I went to their website and they have some programs such as a kitchen designer and other designer programs. I thought, neat, I'll play with it.

I downloaded and installed the kitchen software and..... it installed a "a malicious Trojan software." It was some kind of normal pest browser hijacker and pop up garbage. I had to download some malware cleaner software to get rid of it (couldn't get rid of it manually on my own.)

The software was directly downloaded from the IKEA website and NOT in email or any other place. So I guess the statement "We ask all receivers to delete the e-mail immediately." is just because they would rather you get the garbage directly from the IKEA site rather than from some 3rd party emailer....

It's possible that it's not as bad as AV make it out to be. Rather, it's just a bit of an annoying adware, but your PC's security isn't overly downgraded. Eitherway, it's more of a gimmick than anything else.

What kind of idiot would just install a random attachment that dropped in their inbox?
Surely people know about this kind of thing by now?
It's the whole "It'll never happen to me" thing, or people are just inquisitive.
what is ikea?

The kind of idiot that shops at IKEA probably.

If i received a legitimate e-mail form them it would go straight in the folder named after their products. Junk.
Lol, that's one way of looking at it.

Funny!

None, but dont be too suprised if it turns out they paid for it in order to generate publicity, or if the trojan software doesnt exist outside of the Ikea marketting department.

How responsible of them to make us all aware, rather than relying on the proper authority.
I've met people that work in IKEA marketing, they have 1 brain cell between the whole department, so I doubt they would be able to come up with a scam like that.

Sounds like every other marketing department then.. brainless droids that live in a theorised world

Maybe not, but a commissioned advertising agency might? Viral marketting is the latest fad, making an advert that people actually want to share and send to their friends has been the goal of the advertising industry for some time.

Why would a hacker go around giving free publicity to Ikea. If a hacker wanted to attack Ikea they'd take down their web presence, not gift them a viral advertisement.

I don't think they want to attack IKEA. They just want to destroy as many PCs as possible and used IKEA for that since it is a very well known company. IMO.
