Alright, I'm desperately searching for a job atm. Since Katja needs our 207 to drive to work each day I'm thinking of getting something myself around april/may.

I want something cheap that doesn't take too much fuel and is cheap in tax (which is something like co2- and displacement connected in the very near future).
I can go up to about 10000€ but would love to stay way beyond (maybe around 5000 max).
I've already thought about the citroen c1, peugeot 107 or the aygo, but at 11000 these cars don't offer too much. So maybe a used 206 or something might be good, assuming it isn't too old and got a decent catalytic converter.
Historic cars built before march 1979) would be fine if I don't have to repair them first to get them going.

What would you get for this money?

Get a Dacia Sandero or something like that. The basic model costs around 6000 euros and although they are not hi-tech, they are bigger then the cars you already mentioned and from what I've heard, reliability isn't an issue with them. Plus I know they're quite popular in Germany so finding cheap parts isn't a problem as well.

Earlier on I've sworn never to get a car beginning with an "F". So there'll be no Fiat, Ferrari, Ford or Folkswagen :-)

I might step back from this maybe (except for the 2nd and 4th one), but e.g. the Fiat Panda, Suzuki Idontknow, VW fox and the like are all cars for under 10000€, so they say. Effectively though you might want one or two gadgets on your ride which make it cost over 12000. Maybe I can tell the people at ye olde car shoppe that I want an 11900 car for a tenner, but I don't think that'll work.
I've seen many Porsche 924S's for 3-4000€... those have a cat and are zinc coated (so no rust). Modern super Minis cost 7000€ more, are about 100€/year cheaper in tax, use about 3 litres less/100kms, don't know about insurance. But keeping the fun of driving aside, would this be a wiser choice?

Edit: bambo, thanks for the hint... However I've had a look at their website just a moment ago. The Sandero is 7500€ when I want the raw thing. If I want side airbags I'd have to get the better line for 9500 AND pay 280 extra........ So in the end I've got a car that is taxed higher, has a higher insurance rate and costs the same as the others...

I only need enough space for 2 adults and a child seat, on the other hand it's true we all want the biggest thing for the least money :-)

Well sorry if I wasn't very helpful . IMO a second hand, petrol 107 Peugeot or it's Citroen cousin sounds pretty good but then again a Dacia Logan, if you haven't checked it, might also be decent since it has more space then a Sandero and ,at least in my country, it's cheaper and with the global crisis they even offer you extra things(AC, airbags, mp3) for the basic price.
But I personally would go for a Mini. Get's relatively a lot of kms per liter, fast, nimble, and lots of fun.

The Peogot 107 is a great car.
It is really fast from a standstill so you can challenge others at stops and easily beat them. An amazing amout of legspace. Radio, Airco, Heater, and much more! The seats are really comfy and and the driving is very comfortable too!
Go for the 107.

About as fun to drive as sawing your own balls off, but hey, at least it's reliable. And you should be able to find one in good shape, for the half money you have

You ARE indeed helpful, thanks for that. I'll have a look at that Logan. Also I've had a few Minis before, they're great! 650 kilos and 50hp... what a blast! the 0-series BMW is something different though

@Vinny: I think you can get way more car for your money... the 924S might just wipe the floor with the 107
But yes, If I went for a new car I'd go for a small 107/c1/aygo, despite the fact I don't like modern cars that much.

Edit: @thunder: sorry mate, 2002 Polo 1.2 (65hp) with 2 spare wheels (??) and dents in the bonnet (hailstorm) still is being sold for rediculous 5600€... One reason for not getting a VW: they're hellish expensive, even with no gadgets at all! Thanks anyway mate :-)

not available around here found one ... mazda 3 sp, 110 hp ricer finish for 20k €... that's plain stupid :-)

I think that parts are a bit more expensive for it as well in comparison with the cars mentioned above.

I actually thought they would be cheaper in Germany than that. But it's still better than here - that car would fetch 1000€ more easily here

your in germany you don't know your lucky... if it was me id go for a Ger spec Mark 11 or two escort ( 1.1-1.3 ) for around 1000.... maybe a uno turbo ??

after a small bit of importing research... you guys pay next to nothing for your cars... though you have an immense population... still... several thousand cheaper then here...

if a classic doesnt float you boat either a 96-00 hatch back corrla or focus would be my choice...


the corrolla would be preference as the focus is like a ship with no wind in its sails

Geeez, that is cheap! You see, that's the problem I have with getting a car. The smallest ones seem to be quite popular these days, so they cost almost the same as big ships... And I don't know if it would pay off to get a very very small car that uses 5 litres/100kms for MUCHO money, or if I just should buy a (used old) car I like, which drinks 8 lt. but is MINE immediately (no leasing or rental sh*t) and feels good.
My old alternatives would be a Mini (the good old one), Porsche 924S (not at all because of the power, but because the normal one is near impossible to get an E2 rating for the tax office) or maybe even an old weird citroen built before 1979.
Man, I hate those descisions. I'm gonna marry in August, We're going to buy a ~100000€ flat very soon, I don't have a proper job atm and I might need a car in the near future. My whole life is rolling like a big wave these days damnit!

If you consider a 924, why not a 944? www.pff-online.de is a great place to get more info on these cars.

Naah, the 944 is just too monstrous with its wheelarches and stuff.
