Nice to see you thought to learn something BEFORE contradicting me. I assure you that F1 cars have always meant to have reverse gears that can be operated at any time. They choose not to use them because a) it's not easy reversing in a single seater and b) the gear is very narrow to save weight, but that means it isn't very strong. So it's only used if there is no other option.
