But saying that, I'm sure there would be more accidents if all cars had their ABS and ASM, traction contol, etc all removed. To be honest I've never really met someone who says "I have two cars, a 1996 Ford Escort Cosworth (Very unsafe) and a new Passat 2.0 TDI, and whenever I'm in my Cossie I feel the need to drive incredibly safely because it has less saftey equipment"
I understand your theory, but I don't think it works in practise.
Look back further though and go and drive anything with no powersteering, skinny tyres and a live rear axle and you'll soon realise what a proper car feels like to drive, and you have to drive it all the time, no sitting back and falling to sleep wrapped up in a sense of effortless safeness that modern cars try and do. In a car with direct feedback you'll feel what the wheels are doing (because it is so heavy nobody can fail to notice) and the car going light so shouldn't have the slide in the first place. I think people are missing the point, you shouldn't just be able to feel and drive the car in an emergency, you should feel and drive the car every second you are in it and as such are always on the ball. I wonder if you have you even driven a car without powersteering and ABS?
Just out of curiosity, can servers disable ABS for the series races? Thats such a big part of the game that it would be abit dumb to use it in proper races.
It is a safety feature so people do not lock the brakes and die. We arent going to die from an LFS crash so I don't see the need for ABS. Sorry, but its just the dumbest idea I have seen in this game and I don't understand at all why they wasted time on it.
At the moment you will have to write an insim app to force people to spec if they have abs enabled, Scawen has included insim flags/packets for abs and tc. I guess at a latter stage he might have it as a server setup option also
Because the guy is used to the fact that cars have aids.
So let's say the guy pushes his car a bit too much, locks his wheel under braking, and barely avoid hitting someone or a rail, the fear will make him drive more aware and less slower.
Aids make people drive really bad. "Oh, well it's safe, I can be unaware, I've got the ABS anyway".
Tristan is extremely right on his point, and it's a very good metaphore that makes a lot of sense S14, would you EVER lose focus with a big knife right in the wheel's hub ? (And I bet, it would discourage horning ).
EDIT : by the way, moral hazard is not really a theory, as it is used excessively in insurance investment. It's some american guy that realized that people that were equipped with house fire insurance were seeing their houses put on fire more often because they were a lot less careful, since they had something that would cover the damages up. And it's true everywhere. I got mugged once because I was not paying attention in a specific district of Paris (16th), which is the rich people's place and usually very safe at night. You can see the same in love, as when you are in a couple, you tend not to think that your girl will possibly dump you so you let yourself go
Well Zen, I'd be so focused on the big knife sticking out from the wheel hub I miss the old lady crossing the road and smash into her!
AJP, you get my point. Most people don't drive differently in an older car with less saftey equipment than they do in a more modern car. Because 90% of the time, no-one triggers the ABS, Traction control, etc. That's why.
It's a theory with no proof, and I'll be willing to bet that actual accident rates and crash related deaths are lower today then they were 10 or 15 years ago.
And yes, I have AJP. I've driven a 1989 Renault 11 and a 1990 Ford Escort 1.3 Estate. Both were shit but they got us from A to B. I'm sure your Lada is the pinacle of automotive excellence!
As a whole abs and esp save lifes. There is no question of that. Whether the mistake that leads into an accident was avoidable or not makes no difference. What makes a different is the outcome. Was the driver able to save the car? With esp the driver is much more "able" than without. The majority drives pretty fine but are hopeless when they need to make sudden evasive maneuvers and alike.
There were more accidents (relative) than today, be it for better roads and cars today but it is a simple fact that and old car is far more unsafe in escaping from accident and surviving from one. And people drove just as badly as they do today. Esp and abs save lifes, training drivers to drive better might save a few.
The ones who are nagging about the Scirrocio being slow etc, thing it this way: It brings LFS into a whole new perspective!
Real life cars in the game which will probably be quite fun race car event though it's slow and it's gonna be a great cruise car!
Hey, you bad bad boy, nobody called you out on this one
One of the most horrendously under-rated rules of engagement for driving any vehicle: "Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear." (See rule 126 in the Highway Code, which drivers in at least the UK "have to know" and I guess a lot of other countries too - Ireland I know for a fact has an identical rule.)
This means, for the benefit of the hard-of-thinking, that you don't drive around bends at a speed that means you don't leave the road, with the tyres gently squealing.
You instead drive around a bend at a speed that will allow you stop if a herd of cattle/bunch of boy scouts/line of traffic/broken-down car/brick wall turns out to be just around it.
If you don't, then you are guilty of Dangerous Driving, and in theory but probably not so much in practice you can get the whole damn book thrown at you if you have an accident. Perhaps you are still in your twenties and thus invincible?
I learned of the existence of this rule a long time after passing my test, and was gobsmacked because I had never had my attention drawn to the rule while learning to drive (and yet it's so obvious when you think about it.) How I survived my first 5 years behind the wheel, I will never know. (Yes, I was a tyres-gently-squealing kind of driver...)
All you impatient people STFU. Play the game/sim and have fun. You will get the patch, car, and be screaming for more a week later! So shut it Fat Boys
Threads like these should be deleted straight away, they do nothing for forum morale and I'm sure it pisses the devs off.
Just let them work their magic in peace and quiet and be patient, you don't expect a Rolls Royce to be churned out in 5 minutes without testing and refinement would you?
Why does everyone stand up for the devs isnt it there fault, why dont they release the patch as a surprise so they wont get all this crap instead of delaying it and saying early 2009, march aint early really is it!
They aren't releasing the patch because it aint ready. Its harder than you think to make a car (am guessing) but guess what just like other normal human beings, they have other things in there life to do other than LFS.
This is exactly the thing I have been waiting for. I am really tired of road cars setup tuning, because from road car I expect, that I can buy it, adjust some basic features and go race on the track.
I believe that Scirocco will bring closer racing than we can experience in TBO class now just because of REALISTIC setup.
