Cockpit design varies on each users needs, how much room you have, materials to be used and how much it will be used. Mine is a hybrid of a 1200mm wide students desk with a 155mm MDF pedal platform, an aluminium monitor stand to raise the 19" widescreen 65mm and a Honda Prelude car seat mounted approx 440mm from the floor on castors with a laminated steel MDF armrest/mouse surface on the right hand side of the seat. The wheel is a MOMO which I slide to the side when I have other things to do. All of this was built with no real idea of what the final product was going to be but works well, approximate dimemsions were taken from my car i.e. distance from wheel to seat, seat height in relation to pedals and wheel etc.
